I don't know no folks I renewed my IBJJF Card and I also ordered my Beltchecker Card. I got the IBJJF one in the mail first. I guess what I'm saying is Christian needs to step up his post office game. Lol
Hey if I knew it was a race, I would have shipped yours with FedEx overnight!! :D :D :D

So do you have any intention of opening up the API?
I know mind body, one of the more common membership management systems, has an available api (though I've never worked with it, they say it's REST based).
If it does what I think it does, it would be possible for gyms that use mind body to directly put in their memberships into beltchecker.com if you have an open API for it. (setting aside any reasons why gyms wouldn't want to do this, like it's a breach of privacy, etc)

Perhaps down the road. Although it would ultimately be the members themselves who need to fill out and verify their profiles anyway :)

So far yes, a single case (1) of a completed profile whose rank has been disputed by the community for other reasons than incomplete promotion history. Kudos to the person in question for not deactivating his profile, and it has spawned interesting discussion on the forums.
I hope that before people get discredited or unverified that they do their homework. I agree fully with that sort of system and how to verify. Some people shouldn't jump the gun Just because of an unheard of club or lack of photos/ immediate lineage etc. Professionalism and benefit of doubt 1st. There after consequences.

I plan to use a combination of certificates, known lineage, pictures during promotions, and competition at certain levels. Even if I don't know someone, I feel comfortable verifying if they have pics getting promoted and/or certificates that back it up as well. History of competition at a certain rank is helpful too. It all comes together to form a picture of what's going on.

In the beginning I was holding my votes close to the body. Then we had a period where everyone tried to help get the ball rolling and I voted for a bunch I didn’t know but with trustworthy profiles. Now it seems like we have reached a self sustainable size of user base and I’m back to pretty much only voting for friends I’ve trained with and my own students :)

I really enjoy looking over the various profiles and doing the research to verify. Brings me a bit of enjoyment and for sure it gives everyone that "social recognition" that they are looking for. With that said if I have little to go on then I will not cast a vote. Funny how many people say belts, degrees etc. mean nothing (including you Christian) yet they are the strictest on voting. Almost doesn't make sense.

Hah you're right, it is kind of hippocratic :D I don't think belts mean nothing, I just think it's healthy to take a step back and see things for what it is now and then. What I do care passionately about is data verification though. But yes, slight hypocrite for sure :D

I also think my new strict voting criteria is a result of the site having grown to a size where it can live a life of it's own, and I get a ton of messages from people every day asking me to verify them. I prefer at this point to more sit back and see how things play out on their own, to watch it unfold organically. Also, to spend more time on development than on researching profiles (although I do agree that it is nice entertainment) :)

I still get these messages as well. One was more like a demand. lol. not happening.
I agree that the site seems to have a life of it's own and can sustain itself in regards to voting. There is definitely a large enough base for that.
No one really needs my vote but I do enjoy it. Good vibes are always a bonus and I hope I am spreading that energy to my bjj brethren, plus as I told another guy on here, technically I am middle aged and that's what we do. lol You should see how I take selfies.. it's ridiculous. Lol

One benefit of Beltchecker is to encourage people to travel and visit other schools. I come
from a small school in a sparsely populated region. If people were only to vote for people they had met and or rolled with it would be difficulty to be verified. It would encourage me to either travel and visit other schools or host a traveler. Which I think is one of the points of BJJ Globetrotters?

I have 4 criteria I follow for verifying.
1.Professor certificate of belt Promotion. Not all professors do this so.
2. Documented lineage. Very important to me.
3. Pictures of training through the belt system.
4. Look at length of time through each belt, also important to me.

So there is a little bit of a Catch 22 with this. I come from a small school with few students who compete. It might be very difficult to get verified. I hope to compete this fall in an IBJJ Competition and was wondering how I was going to get verified. I am going to the BJJ Globetrotter Arizona Camp next month and figured I would make connections there. However a number of people who I do not know and have never rolled with votes for my profile and verified it? It renders the verification meaningless! Personally I am only going to vote for people I know or rolled with if not against. I feel that should be the policy’. Exceptions can always be made as needed but I feel no one should “verify” anyone they don’t have personal knowledge of!
I think I am the first person from my academy who has joined this site, so getting verification from someone I know and have rolled with might be difficult. However, I have competed in IBJJF tournaments as both a white and blue belt, and have podium pics to prove it, as well as competition dates in my profile which can be verified via the IBJJF website. I also have my IBJJF membership cards for whte and blue, and you can look up my competition ranking for Gi/no gi. Does that prove I'm a blue belt to your satisfaction? I can even provide a chain of photos and video showing Roger Gracie awarding my head professor his first 3 degrees last summer (it had been 10 years since they had been in the same place at the same time) complete with jokes to us students about being patient to wait for your stripes! Then I have a photo and video of me getting my blue belt last summer from the same professor. I think most/all of these pictures are in my profile, and according to my verification votes, it is why people I do not know verified me. I think that's acceptable in may case, and I recognize that some people don't have that. And then there's the poor souls who don't have a black belt to train under who train under a brown, purple, or even *gulp* a blue belt!
As this site catches on and gains more momentum and legitimacy, I think the process will work itself out. I don't think it's a real danger to anyone except someone foolish enough to try and fake their belt rank, which as a practitioner I do not understand. White belt is the hardest and easiest belt, and if I were going to fake one, that'd be the one I faked. No one expects anything from you! :D
No system is going to be both effective and perfect, and there's more than one way to bake the verification cake.

Guys, guys, when we launched mid January it would often take weeks or more than a month for people to get verified. The numbers now are insane, we are seeing almost a million points per 1.5 week now in the system. Have a little patience :)

Low blow to the white belts.
I apologize, as it was not intended to be. White belt is the most important belt of all, because it is the beginning. The process/journey/whatever you call it gets harder when you get that blue belt promotion. It comes with expectations and responsibilities. You'll find that out when it happens to you.
I personally love working with white belts, just as I loved when the higher belts worked with me at white. It's a time of great learning. And I literally said right before I got promoted to blue "You know, I could stand to be a white belt for a little longer."

I believe belts don't mean much to individuals, but they mean everything to the sport. This is how we measure progress through the art and maintaining credibility of the art should be a priority for all of us.
Regarding the verification process, I am still not verified and I am OK with that. I don't have a competition record because that's not my thing and I purposely didn't put a bunch of pictures of my journey in my profile because I would prefer that people base their vote on knowing me and how I roll than on my marketing skills. Right now I've got one person that voted for me that said he was voting for me because I had 3 black belts and one brown belt from my lineage vouch for me. I think that makes good sense for someone who is just getting started on the site, but it brings me to my question. If I am training under a well regarded black belt that is verified on this site and he has signed off on my promotion on this site, why isn't that good enough? It seems to me that this would be the most important vote of all especially considering that most of my votes have come from people I train with and are basing their vote on the judgement of my professor anyway.

Verification by a single person is what IBJJF is doing. This site serves a different purpose (community data verification).
If the person who promoted your current rank has voted to verify you, this will be displayed with a badge on your profile and your achievements list as well.

I am enjoying going through the verification process and have suggested the site to some of my students. I think the concept of the site is awesome. I feel like it reflects some of my favorite parts of jiu-jitsu -- dedicated community, organic validation and making new connections.

I had this in mind when I designed the system, but it just raises more questions, like if you trained with someone, are you still in a position to verify their belt rank? What if they put on a purple belt but, are really just blue belt but did pretty well in those 4 minutes you rolled? I think that just leads to even more uncertainties, so I ultimately decided to let the community organically figure out what would be the criteria for verification. ...WHICH also very well can change over time. We saw in the beginning that people held their cards close and only verified people they knew well. Then there sprung a culture of helping the site grow, so verification through a trustworthy looking profile of a stranger became a thing. Maybe now when we have a larger user base, this will again come to a hault and people will go back to only verifying friends and training partners. Who knows; regardless it's interesting to follow. And at the end of the day, whatever the average of the community as a whole decides is 'verification', that will be actual verification. Because the rules, regulations and culture of BJJ is just that; an average of what everyone agrees is correct behavior. Let's see, I'm excited :D
I really like this thought. It seems like (form my limited experience in the community) belt ranking can mean a lot of different things to different people. Some in the community will be fine with photos, others will want to know some personally before voting for them. I think the range of different opinions amongst users just gives the system more validity as a whole.
In one sense, if a blue belt can put on a purple belt (or even a black belt for that matter) and roll well (even win) does give him credence as having the rank he put on? For some people maybe not. I'm not a fan of the idea that people should self promote themselves, but in one sense skill is a large factor in what determine rank (in my mind). Character and other qualities are important too.
One thing I like about this community is that it gives someone like me (who has moved a lot) a chance to be "verified" (I'm new here so currently working on that). I've run into trouble where I don't have access to train with my previous coach (moved to a new state) and found a new coach here that didn't want to recognize my rank (seemed like a money grab). I eventually found someone to train with so that's nice, but beltchecker seems like a good way to solve some of these issues.
I also wonder, how important is lineage in verification? It's obviously something that has been a major role in traditional martial arts for years (I have two karate black belts, so I know how this goes). But isn't validity in BJJ more than lineage? I mean your lineage doesn't determine your skill or limit what you can learn.

I have to say, I think the concept is a fantastic idea! The idea that the local BJJ can vote for quality belt ranks and actively dispute questionable ranks/promotions is something that is missing from the IBJJF! I know of people who have signed and vouched for grading certificates from white to black belt in the IBJJF without having ever met them, fact checked or done any sort of investigation on their own other than collecting a fee... Open source like this is the way of the future and I believe has the potential to rival the IBJJF in years to come when it comes to credibility!

Honestly, it can pretty much be as simple as tracking the time, and promotion pictures with other black belts with legit and recognized lineages.

No you're not. 92% of completed profiles are verified. Make some properly documented profiles, have a little patience and you'll get verified too :)

I feel that in some countries like my own (Spain), where BJJ, the English language and technology don't really go along very well it will be very difficult to get verified. Much more when you consider that there are not many black belts here. My coach for example is a brown belt who lost years ago all realtionship with his former black belt coach (on the issue of his promotion to black belt and something he could not accept doing), he does not like BJJ politics at all, is also badly injured after a motorcycle accident and doesn't compete or train anymore (only teaches and occasionally rolls with us students). So we're basically doomed for Beltchecker I guess :) But we love him and training in our school, we learn a lot. He is also well respected by the community here. I guess what he would have to do is wait until one of his former friends and team mates get to black belt third degree (or second?? Everything is so confusing an ceremonial) and then get promoted. But BJJ got here not so long ago and its a super small community, and he doesnt really care at all about belts, he would never make the effort of having to go to some other school and ask another black belt for such a favor.
In this video he is wearing a black belt? Also on many photos on the academy facebook page even back to 2016. Did he get promoted to black and then got it taken away after the split from his instructor?
