People will expose themselves as to their legitimacy over time. No one can outrun skills. I say let people verify “on the backs of photos” or based on friendship if they choose. At the end of the day, the JiuJitsu speaks for itself.

I agree with a lot of the points being made, Most of the posts are a year old so I'll add my 2 cents anyway. How about being able to integrate websites or platforms like smoothcomp, Ajp, and another competition platform that we use to sign up for our competition on belt check I guess it would only be for a competitor but at least that would clear some room and for those that don't compete and the older practitioners, we still do our reach. If possible be able to add video footage to the belt checker platform

Beltchecker is already integrated with smoothcomp. You can also add video via youtube all over the place on your profile.

Find the dark places and light them up with the mind being the greatest weapon and the heart the greatest shield…
Photos alone can do a lot. Links to videos can do more. Running a BJJ School does even more with vids of training folks does more… having verified training dates and vids that are noted even much better. All of this and articles and books published and students that you have trained promoted and have in live action competition winning helps a lot!!!

A person who is very serious chronically annotated what they do. It’s part of the journey of a Jiu Jitsu adept who wishes to be a useful to the community. This is what I have done. I am an IBJJF Competitor who has won at open and high level events. Also I have done all the stuff mentioned above. I welcome you all to look at my page and perhaps use it as an example. Being a higher rank has significant weight on martial skill. But there are variables to consider. There is the whole spectrum of study, health, coaching, conditioning, teaching, publishing and competing.

The higher the belt rank the more of the things mentioned in the past paragraph become important. Very few peeps can meet all of these standards. Few peeps with high ranks held now do. For me right now, the only use for this organization is the datum collection tool for training. It logs hours and CMA adds them automatically. I just recoded all the training I tediously recorded in text and video for since I received my last promotion. It really put my efforts in perspective. I now can see why I have been able to accomplish all that I have and can write a book on going from Purple to a lack statistically …. I can make a standard. It may be a high standard …. But it is a standard to time, effort and accomplishment mental, physical and emotional.

I believe for this organization to help the community it must make a standard. The standard must be based on the training requests for information. I am actually academically trained in this area. I have done it for the US Military training corps. Additionally, this organization must find a way to grant promotions. Evaluation teams must be formed to travel to meet high level petitioners for promotion. Underground venues of tournaments to test martial skill after all other factors have been evaluated. The evaluation teams must be of high evaluation caliber. A team of three or five should do. And they should be from purple to black with the majority brown and black with at least on Blackbelt to lead them.

I have trained at many different gyms. Trust me when I say everyone is different, to have a set standard is like doing kata to some extent. Let the individual instructors promote for their schools and the chips will fall. Everyone has a different expectation, that's why I like BJJ, its not so set in stone. Chill about it and have fun.

I thank everyone who thought my post was worth responding to. I believe a lot of the critiques have a point. Also a lot of the points made is why IBJJF is a standard of performance that is reputable. The issue again how can we as a group be more useful. I believe this can be but it will be whatever the IBJJF is not. So the question is…. What are we all about?

Again I am academically trained in instructional evaluation. I know even within that group my views are … different. I believe that the sub-tasks of training self- evaluation is already a standard scaffold. I know for a fact that the data gathering for my performance is extremely useful. Metrics make the process measurable, observable and replicable. In this sense I am doing exactly what a martial art should do…. Motivate a person for modal behavior enhancement…. Thinking, Doing and Feeling.

Additionally, having peeps review and reset a decision on the validity of my program based on training and results has a very satisfying experience. Even though I have a professor now I have actually gone a year and a half without a Professor. I have a school and I have students. Through research and mentoring by advanced instructors critiquing all my videos and written analysis I have gone into competition. At low and high levels the wins and losses helped to form a curriculum that improved my game technically, physically and tactically. Not only my martial performance but my performance as a person in relationships in the context of training people tk be competitive and champions. For the a brown and Black belt levels such skills are and should be evaluated.

As Professor Chris Matakas says in his book, “On Jiu Jitsu”: Jiu Jitsu is to life as Competition is to Jiu Jitsu. It should not be the goal. It is part of the process. As we go higher and higher in rank it must be evaluated because Jiu Jitsu as a martial “art” means it cultivated out behavior that has us act with unnatural elegance in austere situations. Win or lose matters not. It’s how ya win and how ya lose!!! So I believe it should be a standard of evaluation that should be and is a part of the training process.

So many hours or number of the categories we have already deemed a part of our profiles are great. The issue now seems to be that for some people it is important t to touch advanced ranks requests. I agree. If the person is not competing and having the performances recorded it is important to have a team go and “touch” them. For this we need performance standards. There are a few professors that have some guidelines for this. The most powerful is Roy Dean’s student Professor Rick Ellis. Take a look:

I just read all the posts on this subject/topic and enjoyed the dialogue and exchange. I'm new to the site after being asked by a friend to join as a way to interact with the BJJ community. One has to put forth serious effort to create a profile and I feel that anyone that has been at this for a while can easily look through the profile and discern legitimacy. I for one was blessed to have fellow practitioners (especially Black Belts) look through my profile and verify me. Jiu-Jitsu weeds out the weak and fake and although the concerns expressed are valid may just be a little paranoid. Having participated in the IBJJF my entire career I for one don't know how a person can fake a membership or podium pics etc.

Christian_Looking through the site I noticed that Master Carlos Machado made an effort to create a profile . I understand policy and procedure but I don't think he needs anyones validation. kindly allow me to recommend that ADMIN take over and get any Master's Profile's expedited and up to date as one would think having a Master on this site would only enhance or add value. Blessings!

We do have one "Master" on here with a verified profile (Luiz Palhares).

I will also point out that the ibjjf has a long history of not recognizing plenty of high ranking jiujiteiros simply because they didn't pay into the pyramid scheme at the right time.

Maybe to "motived" more masters to be on the site it should be different, be able to vote for them strait when they register, because, it's kind of insulting, when your like a Machado with 7, 8 or 9 degrees and a with or blue belt came to ask you to make your proof... i know that it is the way this site work and it is fantastic to normal people but... even when i started those Machado brothers where already consider like masters so it seems crazy to have doubt about it.
But in the same time there are two others People register as 8 degrees who make me suspicious with no informations but in the same time, i NEVER heard about them...
If someone want to joke, he create a profile put 9 or 10 degree, and he stay there pending on the higher rank.....
People maybe didn't care about that but in fact i see a weakness in the systeme. On those higher rank it's pretty quick to know if they are legit or not.

Because it take a long among of time, specialy when you have being training for 40 or 50 years....i didn't talk about normal dude, just super high ranked masters, because it can be interesting to have those people on the site to reach another level of recognition. But i maybe wrong, if it's the case, then it will stay quiet.

Sorry, it makes no sense to let people vote for incomplete or empty profiles, just because the person is famous. Where would you even draw the line? Should we be able to vote for people without details about their promotion history or ID verification? And who decides if they're famous enough to be able to "skip the line"?

If people don't want to make an effort contribute to the site, I don't think they should get any special treatment, no matter how famous they are. That would be more of an insult to the platform than it would be to the person who need to spend 15 minutes on entering his/her belt promotion record.

The profile was quickly outed at fake but those who voted for him will live in infamy. That was a great forum thread. LOL

in Chile we doesn't have not even a proper federation to rule the game in the right manner. So, this is not quite yet socialized to be considered as an alternative to IBJJF, I've competed in IBJJF events and they are still a mayor point of reference for Chilean community, however, the certification issue is still a burocratic process that should be easier to go through. In this way, Beltchecker seems to me a better option that IBJJF verification system.

For example, I signed up for IBJJF in my lasts months as brown belt, like July 2021. I competed in Masters in Vegas last year, and got promoted to black belt this year, but they doesn't want to verify my belt until I complete 2 years in their system. BeltChecker community did gave me the verification and this is more important to me.

Regards everyone!

I am supportive of belt checker. I am not a fan of the IBJJF and think we need an alternative, which could be this, but the way it's naturally developing leads me to question if it's going to be the alternative we need. The IBJJF has integrity at the expense of being exclusionary. If you don't train with one of their recognised (fee paying) black belts, then you don't get to be an IBJJF black belt. However if someone has an IBJJF black belt ID card, I am certain they're a 'legit' black belt. I have not put much effort into getting verified, which has led to only 2 people I know, and have rolled with, verifying me. The rest are people who are literally verifying me on the back of photos. Verifying me, but also recommending I upload more photos? My dudes, anyone can put on a gi and a belt and take a photo. My point is; I like the idea, but if it's going to be a big circle jerk of verifying people you've never rolled with to get more points, then that will impact how people view a 'bjj belt checker' black belt.
Yeah i can see that, but i think this is an app in its testing fields still, im sure our lineage would make sense but as someone with a "non-famous" professor.... it can get a little difficult. Im lucky chris hauter knows my professor, otherwise i wouldnt have been verified as a blue belt.

Love the thread. I was brought to know of Beltchecker through a fellow competitor. I was promoted on the IBJJF Pan Am podium after winning my division in weight class and open categories by Professors Sam Braga of GB for Purple and Mike Allen of Checkmat for Brown belt. The value of IBJJF and Beltchecker is that the former allows you to compete against and be seen by high level competitors and promotions. My school is now recognized for making highly skilled performers by promotions and we have backed up that notion when cling super fights.

The latter organization, Beltchecker, is great for extending that recognition but is also bound by it kinda. But bottom line your legitimacy personally and as a trainer is dependent on .. your performance as a competitor and the performance of your students in competition. And this is awesome. There is another thing that makes Beltchecker superior to IBJJF:

Your metric engine for training !!!

I have actually been able to track and break down my training metrically. This is important for two reasons. First it allows me to compare increases and decreases in performance based on the metrics. Second it allows others to see what it takes to be successful with regard to train g time and competition performance. The comment engine allows for Video proof of training. This means you can video yourself and look back and compare where you were and where you are now!!! This is an invaluable service to track the idea of competing against yourself.

I have done some comparisons and analytics based on NIH research findings on health and performance issues for jujiteros. I have found metrics that suggest there is a correlation to my style of training and quantum increases in training frequency and decrease in recovery time. All of this allows for me to write a book on my journey that has a lot of weight scientifically.

If there was an improvement for Beltchecker it might be built around category cultivation for training. As for the validation effort. You guys are doing the best ya can. I will feature your work in my new book:

A New Noon: The Religion of Jiu Jitsu

Also…. I literally live in my gym. I have a huge expensive home but it makes me to soft … so I live in my business most of the time training, teaching and studying combat sport. I actually have an online radio platform and a lot of time to lend a hand to this organization. I would also love to start a publication for this organization.

I don't think learning to ace a test is a good indication of being good at doing or passing on jiu jitsu.
I would still be a white belt if I had to pass some dumb test based upon memorizing stuff that I might consider useless to my goals.

Different instructors might have different goals for their students. But they forget the students might not care about their goals and have their own unique goals and reasons for doing jiu-jitsu that might not align with the instructors. That doesn't always mean that they should train somewhere else. Instructors might have certain goal set in stone for their students but others should realistically align with the students own set of goals and not try to mold their students into a copy of themselves.

Not everyone learns the same. And not everyone wants to practice the same.

Some people are amazing in practice and then suck in competition.

Other people are amazing in competition and look like they suck in practice.

Some people are great teachers but can't replicate what they can do in slow motion at full speed against full resistance.

And some people don't even care about being good at jiu-jitsu and are not going to do the things required to get good at jiu-jitsu. They just are showing up because it's a stress relief. And that's fine.
