We're a good six months deep in the pandemic now, how is your academy holding up? Are you training yet? Did you lose any members?
We stopped training very early at my place. Recently resumed official training and it doesn't seem like anything has changed attendance wise. We're in hurricane season right now and many people have left the island for a few months. There are 5 active infections here right now, so it's not much. But I might make it a habit to take 2 weeks off training before I am leaving for any camp. I can't really afford to risk an infection and not being able to travel.

We've been closed from the end of March - Still got fingers crossed to get back to training in September.

We reopened mid-June and still have a significant decrease in attendance.

The words "unmitigated disaster" spring to mind. In my main club: Enthusiasm for zoom classes and more solo drills evaporated in May and was never high to start with. Nobody that didn't already have a grappling dummy ever purchased one during lockdown... I'd say that in May people either dropped out of BJJ or decided to do their own thing in garages and whatnot. We have a double hardship because we don't own our premises and train in an open space at a leisure facility, which isn't even open again, despite legally being allowed to. Other clubs that have their own premises are doing contact sparring between the trusted and long term members but that's impossible for us. In summary, there's no enthusiasm for non-contact BJJ.

I have closed my club again, students proved themselves incapable of following the rules the last time so I'm not willing to take the risk, however small.
Level 2 guidelines say you need to be at least 1m away from people, how do you jits a metre away from each other? At least that's what I'm telling my students.
Sucks though, I can litterally feel the bjj leeking from my body and my old gym, where I though relationships where mending clearly aren't. No jits for me either. :(

In Germany IT depends on where you are. In Cologne and Hessen we're basically back to normal. The group at my main gym is practically unchanged. I understand that there's still no contact sports allowed in some parts of Germany, but I've been in Estonia for the last 3 weeks, so this may have changed.

We are one of the bigger gyms in Helsinki, Finland.
Training resumed beginning June with no set class times or instructors to divide people to smaller groups. Members were careful and many trained within a closed circle of buddies only during this time. I skipped the entire month just in case (had a vacay with family coming up and didn't want to risk it).
Classes resumed with full schedule beginning of this month. Also the "beginner's courses" - and with better numbers of new attendees than the courses before the pandemic!
We had our first Open Mat today. The Finnish BJJ Federation held the Finnish BJJ Nationals this weekend with 300+ competitors (about 1/3 drop from last year; no audience allowed). I have heard of no problems with covid & any of the gyms open or training in general. Then again, Finland has some of the lowest numbers of cases in Europe.
Everything appears to be back to normal except that we disinfect the mats after each session. Also a minor drop in participants because even if you have the slightest symptoms of flu, you stay the fuck home!
We are a non-profit gym and to the best of my knowledge didn't take a substantial financial hit during the 2,5 months were were closed completely.

We are playing the waiting game here. The gym has been shut down since March 14th. The academy where I train is relatively small so many people are still paying to sustain it. Lots of peripheral businesses have been failing largely due to apathy at the national level and lack of resources at the state/local level.
The jiu jitsu landscape around here will change significantly. The state where I live has relatively low virus levels but the restrictions are still pretty severe (which I support, in case you were wondering). Unfortunately, the US is in a lot of trouble in many ways right now and I wouldn't say that there should be a rush to return to jiu jitsu.
Seeing competitions and large open mats in other parts of the country kinda skeeves me out. I will say that some people have established training bubbles or "pandemic pods" at peoples' houses to train in small groups but I have been too busy with work projects, also don't want to risk the downtime of dealing with an illness however mild. I had some pretty serious flu in Feb. of 2019 and the thought of dealing with something similar to that right now (or worse) is not something I want to put myself in jeopardy of.
One thing I did do recently was donate blood. When you donate blood they will test you donation for COVID-19 antibodies so you can use it as a nice little aspect of surveillance testing, that is also free and helps someone in need at the same time.

We train out of a local university fitness facility. They reopened as soon as the law here in Baden-Württemberg allowed it, although initially - and understandably - they weren't too keen on letting us back in due to the ultra-close contact nature of our sport and the fact that our room isn't that well ventilated. After a few days of pondering it over, they gave us an air-conditioning unit with some kind of magic anti-virus button (yeah) and gave us the go-ahead. The building had to close down again for a week at one point due to a suspected case (not us), but apart from that we've been back to normal training for about two months now. Pretty much all the same faces as before, and even a handful of new ones.

Seriously, it has a big cartoon icon of a virus right beside it. I don't know if science has been informed yet but they should really get on that.

it is still not allowed to train full contact in Norway (since march) so safe to say most clubs are really struggling. The hardcore guys are keeping alive in garages/homes and other places,
only positive thing is (it is allowed to train for people under 20 years) is that in my club thats mostly consists of old guys :D has had a nunch of new kids. last week i had over 10 kids in the class and thats great in our club (small place).

I've been seeing these sorts of strange anti infection measures also. Weirdest one for me right now is my judo club. We're allowed to train full contact, but only if we wear masks.

We are back on the mat since mid of may after closing in mid March because of government restrictions.
In may we in our state north Rhine Westphalia were allowed to train non contact keeping distance at first and we did lots of bjj movement Solo drills, dummy drills and Strength & conditioning.
As soon as we were allowed to train with contact (max. people indoors of 10) in June, we were back to normal, as our group is small anyway. Off course we track every session to know who attended when in case of Covid infection and we keep an eye on sanitizing hands, etc....
We have a „core“ of a dozen longtime students who stayed with me, only 2 left the group because of Covid Situation.
At the moment we are allowed to train with max. 30 people indoor and with contact.
Under the the given circumstances and to reduce the chance to get a Covid infection we don’t allow non members to train with us and we hope everybody understands that!

We've been shut down since March, but people train illegally. The gyms themselves will probably go out of business if the government doesn't help, just like many other businesses in Montreal. For perspective, 0.05% mortality rate in the United States due to Covid. In many regions of Canada, more people are dying of overdoses than this disease. I suspect the suicide rate will be through the roof once the numbers are released. But what do I know.

In most of Salt Lake County, Utah, USA, We've been officially back open since June. I know some MMA guys that did some "speakeasy" training during the ronapocalypse. We are a few people short on our regular lunch bunch, but the stalwarts are back.

I closed my academy in June due to the lockdown and nationwide ban on contact sports with no end in sight. The day I handed back the keys the government allowed contact sports again. I'm not sure of the number of gym returnees but I've kept in touch with the old members who have indicated that they would resume if/when I find a new place to train. In the meantime, I managed to get in a couple of hours of rolling at my 'garage gym' yesterday with a couple of friends which was excellent!

Oh no! Really sad to hear that, Vince. Your gym was awesome. Really enjoyed my time in your gym in KL back then.
Hope you find a good spot for a new gym.
All the best, greetings from Germany,

We're in this weird limbo between Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the governor's plan for reopening the state (Delaware). Our gym is open, and we have a lot of COVID-related protocols in place, but we're ultimately unsure if we're technically allowed to be operational.

Sorry about the shit timing for your gym. I'm sure things will get back to close to normal in the coming months.

My gym is closed and will be for months here in California. I have 7 guys from the gym that are willing to follow a protocol:
1. A commitment to wearing masks and only being around those outside your family who are wearing masks
2. Limiting exposure to anyone outside your bubble (no protest peaceful or otherwise)
3. Only rolling with people inside our group
4. Testing every 10-14 days texting the group the results
5. If you break any of the protocols or and found yourself in unsafe situations that is OK, just test negative twice and you are back in.
I know it is restrictive and relies on self-reporting, but it reduces the chances of getting and spreading COVID to our friends and family. For everyone in our group, these are easy markers. None of these restrictions is a problem for us because we are all old, working from home, and have families that take priority over going to bars or parties.
I'd love to have the gyms open, but I don't know how many of us would go back to the gym until there is a therapeutic or vaccine the can be relied on.

Closed since March. I'd like to stay closed until the English regulations allow full rolling again, but financial pressure means I'll have to open in the next week or two. Just solo drilling, until there's clear guidance from the govt allowing more than that.

We had to close from mid March, to mid June. We did the whole "zoom meeting" routine...
But upon reopening, we retained approx 75% of our original members.
No known cases among any members yet... A lot of new inquiries about memberships on a weekly basis... We have a screening process now and are not taking 'just anyone' who has the $ for training fees...
So far, so good! We will see what the winter brings, though.

We have way more than 50 on most days, at the same time. BJJ class on the tatami, boxing class on the stand-up area, pro mma fighters in the cage...
Basic gym ventilation system I guess, with a few windows open if it gets warm. No government restrictions on private enterprises such as gyms here. Been like this since July for us and most other facilities like ours in Finland. No issues so far and haven't heard of any issues in any other gyms either.
