Hey, guys. I started writing some short articles on my site covering key people and events in BJJ history that a lot of people are not aware of. I apologize if they are not too well edited at this point, but I wanted to start to get some ideas written down. I will clean them up over time, but it gives you an idea of what I am going for. I am adding articles each week.
Please check them out. https://simonbjj.com/a-mo[...]plex-story
Thanks,

Cool, I'll have to give those a read, I love BJJ history! I wrote an enormous BJJ history article ages ago, so I'm always looking to update it with more info. :D

Thanks, Slideyfoot. I appreciate it. I definitely remember reading your reviews in the past.

Vince, thanks. Yep, I saw that on UG a few days ago. Seems like a lot of people are pushing this topic forward now; which is great. I hope it something the younger/newer guys spend some time on. It is has been my experience that a lot of the later generations don't have much interest in this stuff.

Robert Drysdale is doing a film about this exact topic , Closed Guard Film. I believe the book is ready to order. Just google it and it may prove useful for your research ...

After reading the „Choque“ books, finally the new book by Robert Drysdale arrived!
I've been thinking about buying that one but have been dragging my feet cause I'm lazy and would rather just wait and watch the documentary.
How is it?

I've only just started it but so far I think it's a bit of a niche book even by BJJ standards. It's not a history book as most people might understand the concept, but a compilation of transcripts from interviews that were done for the film (so a fairly raw oral history). There are 40 pages of material at the beginning and each interview has some introductory material on who the person is and why they were interviewed.
There's no "look inside" feature on Amazon, so I've snapped some pics of a few pages here so you get an idea of what you're getting: https://imgur.com/a/hDJzoGw
If you're on the fence, I would say wait for the movie and then decide if you want more after that.

Thanks for the review & pics.
I typically find more niche more interesting, and based on this the book looks like a must-have! :)

"Ken Shamrock, looked strong and skilful against Pat Smith, submitting him by a visibly painful ankle lock."
Forgive me, but my OCD kicked in. Wasn't it a heel hook? Isn't ankle lock interchangeable with straight footlock.

Love it! I read the first 30 pages now and it as an easy read...really interesting though! I like to have it as a Paperback, because the choque books by Pedreira i only read "online"...
It think Robert Drysdale's book is worth the buy, if you are interested in BJJ / Jiu Jitsu history / origins based on evidence and Facts, not myth ;-)

It's not out on Kindle yet, right? Or it is? Last I heard that was in the works: I don't want even more hard copy books cluttering up my bookshelf (small house, plus they're annoying to bring on holiday etc ;) ).

It wasn't when I bought it, but I haven't checked back.
I would have preferred the Kindle version, too. EBooks keep my inner Marie Kondo happy.

Ha - yeah, if I had a big house, I for sure would line the walls with bookshelves and have a full on wood panelled library. But yeah, sadly BJJ instructor salaries aren't that big (unless you're Carlinhos, Renzo, Galvao etc ;) ).

Jacyntho Ferro article is up: https://simonbjj.com/ferro
Awesome, Ferro doesn't get anywhere near enough coverage! Good article, I enjoyed that. I have one suggestion: I think given it's a serious historical piece, it would benefit from a brief bibliography of sources at the bottom. :D
Looking forward to more! :)

@ Josh: Thanks! Yeah - great article!
I think what Can said is important - to Mention the Sources would be a good idea. Lots of what Josh wrote in his article, you can find in the "Choque" books by Pedreira and is mentioned in Robert Drysdale new book "Opening closed guard", too.

Thanks for the support guys. Donato Pires is next. Yep, the Choque books were a starting point for a lot of the articles. I also picked up two copies of "The Complete Kano Jiu-Jitsu (one 1927 edition and one 1938 edition). I am trying to build up a collection of the original texts if possible. I will be going through and doing some re-editing and will add in references.
Thanks,
Josh
