What's the story behind the lone pink belt on beltchecker? (See pic.) Is this someone who completed Gracie University's women's self-defense program? Or is this some kind of high-ranking and/or obscure black belt? (It seems to be grouped with the black belts.)
And more importantly, does s/he want to be friends with me?

Pink belt has been used in breast cancer awareness and charity campaigns.
Also I've heard it used as a replacement belt that's given when someone forgets theirs.

ya I used to do that in my gym :)
found that if I lent them their actual belt colour, the loaner belt also disappeared but no one forgot to leave the pink belt after training
Edit: hit the enter key too quickly ;P

I'm glad it's not the Gracie Academy one, I'm not keen on their use of the pink belt. Feels rather patronising to me to give out a special pink belt for completing their Women Empowered course. IMO it should be a certificate of completion, not a belt.
But yeah, on the other hand, I do like that they have a specific course which they can use as an entry point to encourage women into the wider sport, who might not otherwise take it up. I am a big proponent of schools having a women only class for the same reason. In my experience, it's a great way of bringing in women who would otherwise never step on the mats (I've got a number of examples at my school, one of whom has since become a core part of the gym and is the head kids class instructor).

I thought about doing the Gracie Women Empowered course when I first got interested in the sport. Husband and I had just bought a house, a car, and consolidated our other debts, so I wasn't keen on dropping a new $129/month on BJJ gym membership (plus all the gear you need). WE online is only $25/month and seemed like a way to dip my toe in the sport until I was ready for more.
But my GB instructor offered me the first ~6 weeks free, so I dived in. And I kept coming (and paying) through pregnancy and pandemic, and I kept paying when the gym closed for 3 months, so probably a really solid business move on his part.
I know there's plenty of criticism of Rener and Ryron and GU out there, but I will say this much: they have a fantastic line of women's products. Enormous variety in women's gi sizes, great line of techwear. I didn't do the WE course but I've heard great things about it.
Gracie Barra is the largest BJJ franchise in the world and when I joined last year, the US store had zero women's tech wear and women's gi sizing was a joke. It's gotten somewhat better since then, but it still boggles my mind.

Yeah: in general, I'm a fan of Rener, I think he's a net benefit to BJJ. I had the chance to interview him a few years ago and take a lesson, plus roll with him, which all left a largely positive impression (he is very very sales oriented, but I don't feel it's in a scuzzy way, he's not an arsehole Lloyd Irvin type). In case anybody is curious - https://www.artemisbjj.co[...]nergracie/
In regards to GB, yeah, I much prefer how Rener runs his business by comparison to how Carlinhos runs his. Having taught at a GB gym in the past for a few years, it's not something I would do again (not that the GB I taught at was a bad gym by any means, I just don't like the hyper formal atmosphere that GB practices tend to produce, when followed to the letter).

We used the pink belt in October for cancer awareness at the academy in the past.

Yeah, we had one at the gym I trained at in Florida for people who'd forget theirs, but we then ended up having someone constantly "forget" his belt due to the attention he received from wearing the pink belt lol

I think my Professor in Florida dyed a white belt pink; is that what you did or did you buy one online somewhere? Asking for a friend...

I bought one a couple years back when my wife was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and wore it every class each October (BTW she's fully recovered now). Fuji sells real belts with the black bar etc and donates proceeds to breast cancer fundraising etc Prof. Scott

No the academy I teach at ordered a bunch to raise coin for cancer and awareness. I think I gave $10 or $20 for it.

I'm really glad to hear she's fully recovered, and that's pretty awesome that they donate the proceeds. I wasn't aware of that.

Glad to hear she is well now. Cancer sucks.
Thanks. It does.
I was going to shave my head, and buy those "Fuck cancer" shirts. She didn't want me to do stuff like that (she likes my long hair) so I bought the pink belt and wore it.
But it still sucks, and she's one of the toughest people I know. makes me feel like a wimp when I'm complaining about something minor from Judo or BJJ. <3

Yep. We have two at our club for when you forget your belt. Now our female members love leaving their belts at home. :s
