An individual I had previously voted to verify based on certificates and competition background came up as needed re-verification. He was not promoted by an instructor, no certificate submitted, but rather it's listed as a time-served sort of thing. Being old school, I have issue with this and don't feel comfortable verifying without a promoting authority. I haven't said no, but rather and withholding judgement. I am curious as to other's thoughts and perspectives.

Self promoting is cringey - while stripes at Black belt is time served, you don't put on your own stripes unless someone of a higher ranking promotes you. Period.

Thank you. That's my gut feeling, as well.

That’s totally up to you (and the rest of the community) if you don’t agree on that. The forum topic that Vince is referring too has an extensive debate on this as well. Degree by time is different than what that IBJJF does btw.

Hmm... according to the FAQ, adding a new black belt degree by "time served" doesn't trigger re-verification, correct?
(So I'm not sure how Mr. Rothrock even got the notification to re-verify that he refers to in the original post.)

I wonder if this is an issue though, with people like Mr. Rothrock & Mr. Tang who'd like to have a promoter name there for each BB degree also. Otherwise the situation can happen where you vote for a black belt, who later adds degrees that you're not comfortable with, and you doesn't even get a notification for that promotion(?).

If he was notified for revérification then there must have been some other changes on the promotion history.

The debate on no reverification on automatic time based promotions, we’ve already been through before, I believe in that thread that Vince linked to.

Yes, I recall there was a discussion and the rationale made sense, but I didn't find it. (It's not on the linked thread.)

Saulo was promoted by a lesser degreed black belt.

Never will touch my own belt as far as promotion goes. Loyalty...respect...dedication...legitimacy all come into question when you go down that path. To me it’s simple, wait!

Honestly I find the stripes on a black belt a little meaningless as they are almost always time served and not merit based.. I always call the survival stripes.. I wonder if I can survive long enough to get the red and white
