January promotions must be all of those who could not be there on the last training of the year :D

if June wasn't like that then it would be the same shape as national deaths. Is there something seasonal about BJJ promotions?

It's probably a pretty smart business move to promote people in December too in terms of member retention. Not suggesting they don't deserve it, more that December would probably be more memorable and leave that 'feel good' factor compared to October or November.

Holidays is when you see a huge drop in attendance, people get busy with family end of year work goals and start trimming budgets for the holidays.
Giving those trips and belts out around that time is a good way to give a small energy boost and keep people coming back before they take two weeks off for family and travel. Plus Its also the end of the year so it's a great time to evaluate how much someone has grown over that period of time. In addition, a lot of gyms hold pot lucks and holiday parties and sometimes hand out belts and stripes during those since everyone's all gathered together and in a festive mood. This is especially ideal for bigger belts because you know a majority of the gym will be there at the holiday party so you can make it special and they all get to see their teammate get promoted and celebrate after.

Pre-pandemic, our school would host a great holiday event that included a "Family of the Year", "Rookie of the Year" trophies. There would also be belt promotions and pictures. Definitely an amazing time! Looking forward to getting back to normal!

I've gotten almost all of my belts in late Autumn/Winter so far (and purple was only just out of winter, 6th March 2011), so that sounds about right. I generally have annual promotions at my gym in December, as my instructor likes to come down to do them just before xmas (though I can promote to blue on my own, I'll often save them up until my instructor comes down, unless somebody can't make that day).
