Been told I'm "better than a green belt", but no, not ranked. It's fun training judo concepts though.

I have a black belt in Judo under women’s mma pioneer Michelle “Grapple Girl” Farrow, who’s last name is now Bishop. She’s a black belt under Christophe Leininger who competed in the first UFC events.

An Orange belt, which means I can just about throw someone who’s not really defending, or paying much attention or is just letting me throw them out of pity as my attempts are embarrassing both of us!

It is incredibly fun though ...when i get it to work ...both times!

Yes but it's been so long since I've stepped in a Judo dojo I've forgotten but only officially ranked an beginner somewhere between orange or green belt

Actively train Judo parallel to BJJ and have done so for almost 2 years now. At the moment I'm still only a White/Yellow belt. Work schedule and the current world's most boring apocalypse (seriously, I wanted zombies, aliens or some sort of Lovecraftian cosmic entity) and recently switching Judo Clubs has been getting in the way of taking more tests. Something I plan to change when the lockdown is lifted. Would really like to take part in some Judo competitions next year.

I am a Brown 3 belt. I've been training for about 9 years. I'm hoping to keep going and earn my Black Belt once the damn pandemic finishes, or relents, or something... I was supposed to test for Brown 2 in March.... :D

Last registered rank with USA Judo was nikkyu, but I've been promoted to brown belt three times in judo that I think I'm ikkyu? (The US orgs use three ranks of brown belt for sankyu, nikkyu, and ikkyu)

Ikkyu would be the 3rd brown promotion under USA Judo, correct.

I'm always surprised that the colored belt system in Judo is so different from country to country. Given how organized Judo is, I would have thought this was more homogenized.

Does america have half belt colors too? I keep thinking it's so strange. I'm always thinking, "I'm an adult, why am I wearing a kid's belt?????". :D

Recently looked this up, daaaaamn it's a mess :D

Good argument for BJJ community to try and enforce a single ranking system. Probably for the better that Beltchecker doesn't leave the IBJJF system up for interpretation in this area.

Tell me about it. In Germany, I understand that this is done to make progression predicable. My judo coach here told me the idea is that you should be testing for a new belt every 3 to 6 months.

Strange thing is, Judo doesn't need so many belts. Most schools are public entities, so they don't need to worry about keeping students to get paid.

Curious how many people here are also training Judo on the side :)
I trained judo before starting BJJ and got back into it before Covid hit.

I was an Brown belt before switching over to BJJ and just train once a week in Judo now due to the majoirty of my time being in BJJ. But between BJJ 4 times or more a week and the occasional judo class I get my fair share of grappling/ standup in. Working on getting caught up on the new rules so I can compete and earn my shodan.

I know Vern Kirk who is on here is a black belt in both and has competed on Fight to Win for their judo matchs.

Yeah, the "?" is more because I'm not positive what to say for my current rank since my ikkyu promotion hasn't been certified with USA Judo. I have some friends who are shodans (registered with USA Judo) so I'm hoping after pandemic I can knock the rust off and have one of them certify it for me. Ideally I'd like to work on my NNK and gokyo to test for shodan myself at some point.

USA Judo and USJA for seniors both just use white, yellow, orange, green, brown, brown, brown, black (until we start talking red/white and red). Juniors add in purple and have some colors last for two kyu grades.

USJF for seniors uses white, green, blue, brown, brown, brown, black (again, until we start talking red/white and red). It does have the dual-colors for juniors, but not seniors.

I've never actually heard of using the half colors for adult ranks even in Canada/Europe as far as I'm aware, so a bit surprised by that, but I suppose so long as they do the kyu system it doesn't matter a ton what belt color they have you wear in class.

In Germany it's White, White/Yellow, Yellow, Yellow/Orange, Orange, Orange/Green, Green Blue, Brown, Black. Far as I know, this is pretty uniform here and I haven't seen anything yet where it's different in our country. We have an Iranian Refugee in our club who used to be on the national team (guy's an absolute beast!) and he was also puzzled when he learned about our grading system.

Truthfully, we care more about the kyu grade than the actual color. Once you get to san/ni/ikkyu, the standards committee requires supporting documentation of previous promotions and points acquired through competition. What alot of people don't understand about judo is that once you get to senior kyu grades and beyond, your instructor doesn't so much promote you as recommend you for promotion.

More important than the actual colors is the kyu/dan grade. The colors may differ, but the nomenclature for the rank itself does not.

Exactly. While belt colors aren't standardized, the ranking system is.
