What are your jiu-jitsu-related 2021 New Year's resolutions?

Mine are:

(1) Figure out how to escape side control
(2) Master worm guard
(3) Don't get promoted to blue belt

What are yours?

Find a way to train more despite being on lockdown. I get to train with my sons but it's not the same as getting a ton of rounds in with killers.
Lockdown is ruining everything.

Oh, and thanks for the follow on insta. Cheers!

Want to train but the govt prohibition on contact sports are yet to be lifted so pretty much in the same situation as everyone else...
every year in the past I've always tried to
1. go somewhere new (country-wise)
2. train at a visitor friendly gym & make new BJJ friends
3. test my game
4. learn new stuff
5. experience the local culture
6. visit affiliate gyms in other countries and provide supporting coaching as needed

1. Iron out my back control entries
2. Teach my pandemic pod how to do more effective turtle turnovers
3. Whatever Mike says I should work on

1) do more marketing
2) keep looking for opportunities to start up a gym
3) finish painting that damn living room wall
and maybe
4) travel to a 10P camp
5) travel to a globetrotters camp

I think 2 through 5 are very unlikely for now.

I have never believed in NY resolutions. If you have to wait for a new year to start working towards something you’re probably not going to stick to it.

Today is like any other day. I’m working toward my short, medium, and long term goals. Some may be achieved within the year, others will take five or more. And the best day to start is always today, whether it’s Jan 1 or April 24.

I shall complete my 10th year of training jiu-jitsu.

(Should be pretty straightforward since I started in 2011; just not quit or die.)

Last year I trained 391.75 hours in BJJ and Judo. A goal this year is to train for 400 hours and continue working on skills and growing my skills.

Butterfly guard really clicked for me after my knee surgery, so I'd like to learn butterfly guard variants like Side-Butterfly Guard and maybe some of the other well-known BB's versions besides Marcelo Garcia (where I learned it from - that instructional is killer) to keep complimenting my X guard.

if anyone has ideas or suggestions I'm all ears.

1. Choke some people
2. Compete in the Europeans (Provided they take place).
3. Keep ironing out my stand up game.
4. Finally do a Globetrotters Camp and visit another Gym again.

I definitely cannot and do not recommend organizing underground fight clubs in remote urban areas where no one goes. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink. ;P

And you can totally not knock three times on the door of the black house on Verliert Str. and under no circumstances give the password "The serpent sings at midnight". There will definitely not be someone to lead you to a secret location blindfolded.

What are your jiu-jitsu-related 2021 New Year's resolutions?
1) Make it to a camp again (I managed to squeeze in Winter Camp 2020 last January, but yeah, this summer I'm booked for the postponed Leuven leglocks Focus Camp and BJJ Globetrotters Heidelcamp, where I am still not sure if covid is going to let them happen. Or indeed the camp I run at my school in Bristol, which I've had to postpone repeatedly, quite possibly will have to postpone it again)

2) Apply all the stuff I've been drilling and teaching over lockdown to 'normal' training. In particular Priit's grilled chicken, I picked that as my major lockdown drills topic so have been doing loads of it over the last year...but solo or against my non-BJJ training housemate. I'm keen to see if all that drilling means my open guard retention is any better against somebody who knows what they're doing.

3) Get student numbers back to what they were before covid, then continue building. Fortunately I haven't been hit as bad as some gyms, as we've been able to stay afloat, but yeah, I was in a good place with student numbers and growing classes before covid. Getting back to that stage will be a priority for me, then going beyond it.

Now you just need to come to the UK, or I somehow need to get to Malaysia again. ;)

Seymour has promised me some extended Priit sparring and drilling too, so I'm looking forward to our annual roll at whenever the 2021 GrappleThon happens. Or Artemis BJJ Camp, he's due to teach at that again too. :D

I hope you get there, too! My instructor mentioned to me the other day that, prior to COVID, he had the second-most students of any Gracie Barra in the Chicago area. He's one of the only non-Brazilians running a school, the only brown belt running a school, and our gym is physically smaller than most.

I really hope he can recapture that success when the vaccines are freely available. It's been painful to read about all the gym closings on Reddit.

My solution to this so far has been to teach people the skill I want to work against. It's worked pretty well. I had okay leg locks but terrible defense so I taught a whole group of folks leg locks and then got better at defense slightly faster than they got better at attacking. I'm working on trying it with wrestling stuff now.

Ha - that's a good solution, but my problem is (and has been, for pretty much the entire 14 years I've been training BJJ) that my open guard is crap. Either I'm against somebody less experienced and I can get away with being sloppy, or I'm against somebody with half decent passing and my open guard falls apart. ;)

But yeah, I'm also teaching grilled chicken a lot, so hopefully that will mean I can spar a bunch of people who are also testing that out. Which would mean I learn how to pass it, and therefore can better at blocking those passes.

Thanks! And yep, I agree with Scott. I think that not being able to train for many many months will mean that numerous people will have reevaluated how important BJJ is to them, and found that they don't miss the aches and pains so won't come back. It's also going to mean a lot of gyms will sadly have gone under. :(

But at the same time, it's also shown just how much BJJ students care about their schools. I've been humbled by how many of my students have kept paying their dues (I don't do direct debits or have any kind of contract, so they could easily have cancelled at any time). Even the ones who understandably couldn't keep up those payments (given that everybody that isn't Jeff Bezos is suffering financially, not just BJJ school owners) always told me before they cancelled. I'll be giving out a loooot of free privates in thanks once training is back on, that's the very least I can do.

I tried to rally as many students as possible to keep paying their dues. Our only financial setback was that my husband got furloughed 2 months from mid-April to mid-June (which worked out okay as I had the baby mid-May).

Husband wasn't crazy about continuing to pay gym membership but I got leverage since I had a baby in a global pandemic for him.
