I feel like I'm going to have to demote myself when I can finally train again. I haven't been able to train in 10 months and there is not even the slightest bit of light at the end of the rainbow. My club follows the covid restrictions to the letter. I have no friends in the club that are part of my social circle, so I haven't had a class since it all started. I was barely a purple to begin with. lol

Frustrating...

yeah looks like we are going to be screwed for more time. I train with my sons and the occasional black market underground training session.
I was able to teach classes (social distance crap) for awhile at both academies but with this province wide lockdown that is out. Losing my mind slowly.
Hang in there Anthony. Otherwise you may have to start breaking the bylaws to get your fix.

Man sorry to hear the lockdown protocols are that strict.

The good news is JJ will be there for us when the restrictions lighten. With the vaccine around the corner, there is a little light in the distance. Personally, I’m going to have to put my self through a Rocky type training camp to keep up with the youngins when I get back as a full swing hobbiest... Keep your head up, brother.
Absolutely

Hang in there. Most of the world is in the same boat with restrictions or complete ban :(

As „the crow“ said: it can’t always rain.
I hear you mate, but don’t give up. We only had 6 months of „contact“ training in 2020, rest Solo Drills or dummy training or no training because of complete lockdown.
For sure it will get better this year with the vaccine!

I've been able to continue teaching Zoom classes all the way through, so that keeps me connected and even learning new stuff (one of my favourite ways to learn is to teach). E.g., it's been fun playing around with stuff off Joel Bouhey's 'Reverse Triangle the World' set, or indeed old Grapplers Guide videos I rewatched (Scully's armbar from the back is much better than what I was using before).

But yeah, I think I'm weird in that I often enjoy digging into technique more than sparring anyway, so a grappling dummy and Zoom helps a lot. The main thing I miss from not being able to train BJJ is the social side, especially not being able to go to any camps for the last year (I'm very pleased I did at least manage to squeeze in Winter Camp 2020).

Hang in there. Hoping restrictions will become more relaxed as the vaccine becomes more common. Infection rates should also start dropping in two months when the warmer weather (in the northern hemisphere) starts to roll in.

Whatever experience/knowledge you had will come back to you. Muscle mind memory is a power thing.

All you will have to work on is your timing. The timing will take a little bit of time to come back that is all.

You don't have to learn how to swim again...you just have to dial down your timing once again which won't take as long as you think it will.

And cardio...
You can do that outside of jiu-jitsu lol

Really everyone who isn't able to train for whatever reason right now should be taking that extra time to improve their physical conditioning and diet if they are concerned with their performance that much as those are some things that you can do that will benefit how well you do.

I'm a hobbyist, not a competitor. Also, many of the other physical activities that I enjoy that would help my cardio, are better suited for slightly warmer weather.

Yup. Also be careful when you return, _especially_ if you've kept fit via other methods.

I think our gym saw at least 3 quite severe injuries right away after re-opening in the summer (after the first wave closure), because people sparred like the used to, but missing that critical timing & coordination due to a three month hiatus...

Having been in a similar position before, let me pass on what was expressed to me.

Don’t demote yourself. You earned your rank. No differential than returning from a serious injury, just get back in there and work your way back.

This journey isn’t about you versus others. It’s about you versus you.

Not sure what the rules are where you are, or whether you care. Here, we are allowed a "support bubble" which is like a special friend to have contact with. I know you don't know people at your club well, but it's a lot like asking a woman on a date when you're at school and want to maintain plausible deniability.

Haha. I know the people, we're just not friends outside of the club. We're not part of the same "support bubble", or "social circle" here. I ask a few groups of 2 to be a thrupple (kind of like a date), but they all said no. Oh well... :)

We had to go underground pretty quick and then when it ended we came into the light. First sign of more restrictions were going dark but not quitting.

I was doing great and missed very little time training because of the Vid, until I finally had my torn rotator cuff repaired. I was out for two full months, forcing myself back now had my second class last night, it’s sore as hell but it was great to get back on the mat and work up a sweat even if I have to take it easy.

You're not all jumping rope outside in 28 degrees, for those sick cardio gainz?.... Maybe I have a problem.

I feel your struggle! I tore my labrum and twisted my ac joint back in October 2020 (I had just got back to training post covid lockdown for about a month and a half.). I didn't find out my AC joint was compromised until Jan 2021. Now the doctor want's me to do physical therapy for 5 weeks on that before I can be seen for surgeon on my labrum (which I was quoted will be 6 month recovery).

I feel this way just because I'm out recovering from a broken clavicle so I can relate for sure. I also have found that the longer I train the less setbacks like being out for an injury bother me, I guess its just prospective.

I took 3 years off for cancer in my late 40's .. I tought I was done with training and was going to die.. I was actually going crazy not being able to train..

When I cam back I was miserable at first as I was slow, rusty and felt like I sucked but within 3 months I was back and loving it

Your absolutely right professor, I told my self in my first year I was doing this for the rest of my life and though everything jiu jitsu has always been there waiting for me along with my friends. I’m blessed to have stumbled upon this art.

Indeed! I've been lucky, I have an 18 year old Blue Belt son. :D Been drilling a ton, and sparring when the Christmas tree didn't eat up a ton of space.
