The results of a 2020 survey:
https://www.reddit.com/r/[...]lt_in_the/
I took the survey at the time and believe I am quoted/paraphrased at one point. (Note: my gym has been safe, the harassment was online.)
I think the most troubling finding in the survey was that black belts make up 21.3% of reported harassers/assailants despite being one of the smallest ranks in the community. Only 3.6% of respondents who took the survey were black belts.
There's a lot to unpack there and some constructive suggestions.

Am I calculating this correctly? Harassers' belt ranks as compared to what % of practitioners hold that rank. I used the statistics from Beltchecker of how many people hold each rank and yes, I know that is not necessarily an accurate representation, but it's probably the best numbers we have to work with here and now :)

Thanks for putting together these numbers, Christian. They definitely tell a story. Harassment is disproportionately weighted towards higher belts, and those who do it are predominantly preying on lower belts.

Yeah that was the only graph I felt like was missing in that study. If one just briefly scans that graph you posted, without reading the context (which probably is the case for almost everyone, from my experience), it could look like white and blue belts are higher thank black belts.

Instructors need to be held to a higher standard. Academies are not and should not be pickup bars.

Did you check out the actual survey PDF? It's quite detailed documented :)

What was the sample size and how was the data collected, Bridget?
From the PDF:
"1583 people responded to the survey. From that group 17 responses were not considered due to blatant trolling or outrageous claims. Of the remaining 1566 responses, 69% of them were men, 30.6% of them were women and 0.4% identified as gender non-binary."
I know for a fact that the survey was posted to both r/bjj and the Women's Grappling Network Facebook group last year (which has over 10K women in it) as I remember seeing it get posted to both groups; I don't know whether it was posted anywhere else.
I would say one flaw in the survey is that respondents were self-selected. I know enough about sociology to know that self-selected surveys are generally a no-no as they might skew results (for example, women might be more inclined to fill out the survey if they've had sexual harassment / assault experiences). A better measure would be, for example, to compile a list of 5000 male practitioners and 5000 female practitioners, then let a computer randomly select 1000 of each to be approached to fill out the survey. Who knows; maybe someday the BeltChecker database could help with carrying out such a survey.
But, allowing for that flaw, this is otherwise a thorough and in-depth report.
(BTW I'm a historian, not a sociologist, so take what I say on sociology with a grain of salt.)

That's why I'm considering getting a "Married and Unavailable" tattooed across my forehead cos I get hit on all the time by lower belts, cos y'know I only marry super models or multi-billionaires- that's my minimum standard.

I think part of the problem is how people venerate black belts like they are all knowing gurus. The black belts start to believe in their own hype and importance. I have seen this so many times. They will begin to act and speak like they really are gurus.
It is a recipe for disaster.

Yes exactly. Thus I was not the least bit surprised that black belts make up for a big %.
I guess at white & blue most dickheads have not been weeded out yet. (They make the biggest numbers even in Christian's data's "Harasser %" ).
Purples & browns appear to be the safest by a landslide, even in relation to their numbers. Been in the game long enough but not in a position of any perceived power yet. :D
The actual study report pdf is really well done.
More than 1 in 4 women in the study has been sexually harassed in BJJ... that is way too much! :(

Bridget,
That wouldnt be truly representative either since women dont make up 50% of BJJ practitioners. I'm guessing they make up like 10 to 20% . So to he truly representative of at least the male to female ratio it would be 800 males and 200 females.

I agree, but the point is to sample how common sexual harassment is for each gender. You'll get good results sampling 1000 women. I'm not sure results would change much sampling 10,000 men versus 1000 men.

I have known a number of instructors who have dated students and while not technically harassment I have always been troubled by it. I feel instructors should hold themselves to a higher standard as it is easy for someone in a position of power/ respect to abuse the position. The most troubling part for me is that the instructors tended to be dating much younger students. At times I have seen married instructors destroy marriages doing this and I lose respect for the person doing it bit that's just me

Back in the day when I used to compete a lot in US karate tournaments (AAU - California), there was a group out in the rural area who took part occasionally. The sensei - a self-styled Kobra Kai wannabee- drove up in his giant pickup with his name custom painted on the doors in large, gaudy colours. His entrance was remarkable in that his students created a corridor lined with all blond, all black belts, similar looking women and he ONLY had blond, black belt women in his team. Things that make you go "hmmm".

Yeah, sorry, I was completely oblivious to the existence of the pdf file.
When it comes to social research, there are always tons of variables you can't possibly control for, hence the "soft science" label that's always applied to behavioral/social sciences. While self-selected responses are not optimal, they are typically very useful in the absence of more "hard" data, in determining how to move further with additional studies... AKA "exploratory research".
Awesome seeing some (more or less) hard evidence on this topic though, so thank you for posting!
PS, I have a B.S. and 2 years of graduate school in sociology, but I haven't worked in that field since 2005, so we're pretty much on the same level, most likely.

At our gym, we just try and keep a positive atmosphere and never forget that in the end we're all just a bunch of grown folk wrasslin' in pajamas. No forehead tattoos necessary!

I think your instincts are correct on all counts. There's enormous potential for abuse in an instructor-student relationship that turns romantic. I understand why such relationships happen and I get that they do work out sometimes. I'd just urge all parties involved to tread carefully.
Infidelity is another story. I probably wouldn't even go to a gym if I knew the instructor had an affair with a student.

Thank you for vocalizing your opposition to this! I think that's a super important step to ensuring a welcoming training environment for everyone.
We had an instructor who was with us for about 1.5 years who had a rather obvious habit of casually dating several women, including students, and we wound up having a falling out. While the relationships were technically consensual, it also didn't sit well with me and I'm glad he's no longer a part of our program.
Of course there is the occasional story of two people finding each other on the mats, falling in love and spending the rest of their lives together in harmony and all that... But then there are those who use their position to take advantage of other people because they can.
I'm glad that we did something in the end to correct the direction of the gym, and due to this experience we will undoubtedly be able to achieve a much quicker, and more effective response to this type of behavior.
