One of my favourite dudes to own the game.

NOT A DOUBLE GUARD PULL IN SIGHT!
My friend Adriano Ornellas trains with him. Told me Margarida, while he fell on some hard times and stopped training for a while, could still stumble into class and run clinics on all the competition black belts.

I still was taught the "Margarida Pass" in my early days... but haven't heard that name in a long time! It appears to be called just a knee slice/slide now.
Also shin-sliding over the arm when going for a baseball choke from knee-on-belly I've learned comes from him.
Cool highlight!

I got a laugh out of somebody recently commenting on reddit that the black belts in 80s/90s match footage "look like gassed out blue belts". :D
There is some truth in that; technical finesse has evolved a ton, and a lot of those old school matches are more like brawls with way simpler techniques/positional game utilized. The good ones are still a lot of fun to watch!

Big difference is that the black belts in the 80/90 could open up a can of whoopass on 99,9% of reddit

And most blue belts couldn't take down my (dead) grandmother, even if the prize was a lifetime supply of acai.

He had a really complete game in the sense that standup/top/bottom was all there. I think he influenced the generation of Mendes / Cobrinha / Roger / Braulio / Lo a lot...

Agreed 100%! I'm still pissed he got robbed vs Romero. That win should have got him a title shot at the right time in his career.

Margarida was definitely one of the all time best I have ever rolled with. In the old days when he was around quite a bit it was very humbling to train with him. Watching him destroy Pe De Pano at the Yamasaki Open was shocking.
