First off, thanks for anyone who has upvoted me, second off, I don't thank anyone who has upvoted me.

Let me explain,

On my profile when someone votes for me I've made it a point not to respond with a generic "Thank you" to everyone as it just seems to clutter up my wall and I don't think it adds much value. Of course I do appreciate everyone on here who supports each others so my question is, should I be responding? Do any of you care if someone says "Thank you" to you voting for them?

Thanks for your feedback!

I don't. A lot of people I've never met or heard of before have verified my profile, and since I probably won't verify their profile unless I've met them or they're otherwise well-known, I just don't respond to very many peoples verifications since I'm probably not going to be verifying back until if we meet up.

I think it is common courtesy to express gratitude for someone taking the time to look at your profile, social media etc to vote.
I don't see how being courteous is a bad thing or silly. Manners matter. Their choice of course. They will eventually level up and need to be reverified. Most won't vote again for that person because they consider them rude or entitled. Others don't care.

I always reply with thanks. It's just common courtesy and costs me nothing and maybe I might even make a new friend

Haha, like I said, I appreciate you guys! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Replying to a vote is a common courtesy. Just because you don't know the person or have never met them doesn't mean you shouldn't be polite. Many people actually spend time viewing profiles and social media before giving their vote.

I don't think that not saying "thanks" to everybody who votes for you is necessarily being impolite either. Especially when you're unsure of the motive behind the vote (due, in part, to the fact that you've never met these people irl). I think if we look closely at all votes, the people who give the most votes, also receive the most votes (aside from many of the "BJJ celebrities", of course).

My understanding of this site is that it's set up to validate "legit" BJJ belt ranks, and not to be some sort of BJJ version of instagram, where you feel obligated to follow someone back after they follow you first.

It's also quite possible that I have no idea what is kosher, so perhaps it's better to go back through and give a half-hearted "thanks" to any random person who gave me a half-hearted vote? Would it be ok to say "thanks", and then not go and verify them as well?

PS, I know I joke around a lot on here and can be fairly sarcastic like half the time, at least, but I'm asking a genuine, non-judgemental question right now.

Thanks for this reply, you’re asking a better version of my original question. I’m myself also not a big social media person. For example, I follow some Jiujitsu people on Instagram that I learn a lot from and admire but I’ve never “liked” a post on there because I find the whole idea a little silly. I see posts of like someone making scrambled eggs for breakfast and it gets 50k “likes” I mean, I guess I don’t get it. When I post “rarely” on social media I could care less how many people “like” my stuff because I’m more putting things like promotions and special cross trainings up for my own records. Not sure if you’re similar with your other accounts?

I almost never post anything on social media.

I think the short answer is that since this site is such a new thing, with very few rules, that is entirely up to us as to how it turns out.

I'm very conservative with my votes, but maybe I should be thanking these random-ass verification hunters as well? I have no real problem with that, tbh. But as far as votes go, it's very rare that I give them out based solely on a profile, regardless if that person has voted for me or not.

And if you do really "need" my vote, at least during non-pandemic times, my door at my gym is always open and I will test you for myself before voting. :).

I responded to everyone thanking them while my belt verification was pending; once I became verified I deleted all my own comments to clean up my profile

Well I try and respond with a simple thank you. The way I look at it, it's the least I can do for someone's time. They took the time to look at my profile.

It's just my opinion

To each their own. I personally just think acknowledging someone's vote is the least I could do. Just like if some random person tells me congratulations after a promotion, I say thank you. It's the right thing to do regardless if I know them or not. I may be naive, but I don't go looking for motives when people do or say nice things. I also don't feel obligated to verify anyone after receiving their vote. I will however return the favor of at least looking at their profile. If I feel they have enough evidence of their rank, I'll gladly give them my vote.

Just to be clear, I'm not judging anyone that doesn't agree. We all make our own choices.

I replied to all, and some back and forth banter was fun.

Then I got my second degree, and when people revoted I'd lost all my original comments.

So now you have to respond to each individual vote, and save them one by one, reloading the page in between. It's super annoying.

It would be great to have a *save all changes* button.

I don't particularly care, a lot of people don't respond to votes. But then I only vote for people I know. so I'll talk to them off this site anyway.

Right on, man. I suppose I was just wondering what was kosher for this site, and figured I'd bring up the fact that some people fish around for votes. I've yet to respond to anybody's votes on this thing (except yours right now). Didn't know it was that big of an issue but perhaps I'll go back and at least say "thanks".

Thanks for your input!

For me I thanked everyone that verified me and deleted the comments after a few weeks. Not really been voted on since I got veriefied
I went to vote for you just to see what you’d do, but I already had at some point.
