Guys I have had an incident that really is making me question teaching..

I had a guys at me gym a complete poser and I tried to help him as he promised me he wanted to change.. And of course I tried turns out he is 2 different people one in life and one on the internet. So of course he keeps being a moron and i give him the boot.. Few weeks later I get a call from DR Phil's show they are doing an episode on how people destroy their lives with the internet behavior.. They promise not to turn it into a circus, and to get him help.. I agree to do it and now he realizes he looks like a fool but to him it was all a publicity stunt for his internet persona..

He started trashing me on the net and I talked to a promoter and he was offered a pro fight against me and I threw a couple thousand into myself if he made it to the end of the fight I would give him money and he would get the winners purse too.. When I knocked him out I would donate the money to Cancer research being a cancer survivor.. That way something would come of the stupidity.. Of course he said no way and finally stopped the bullshit.. ( although I am ashamed to say I went to his apartment when it first happened and he would not come out and that is not my proudest moment acting like a 12 year old at 58)

Now comes the problem he was "friends" with a couple guys at the school.. Now I had to tell most of the students that it was between me and him as most wanted to go to his house and kill him..

There were 4 guys that were friends with him that said I don't want to be involved and like and idiot I let it set untill talking to a friend back east who asked me if I would teach someone doing to one of them.. And I said no if the walked in the gym they would have a problem with them and they would either have to publicly apologize or I would beat their as out of the gym..

A couple of the guys got upset and started to rave about how they are all about the team it was then I realized how selfish people are.. I run a business, have a family, teach for free, travel and work corners for free without me there is no friggen team.. I take away from business and family so people can train yet they think because they come to class when THEY want they are somehow doing something for the team..

I am seriously reconsidering teaching as to be truthfull it would be a lot easier to do what they do and train somewhere else and focus on me..

I respect a lot of the guys here and am really hoping for a reality check.. any advice appreciated even if you do think I am wrong and off base.. I have been told too many times I have a tendency to become more invested in people then they themselves are and when it happens somehow they always end up lashing out at me

Sounds like a messed up situation.
You beat cancer. This is a like cancer in your gym and needs to be cut out for the health of your team and your mental health.
Drama magnets like these folks you described always find their way in to our lives.
Give all of them the boot.
If a guy like you quits teaching the whole art suffers.
In the end you gotta do what you think is best but don't quit sharing what you know.
People come and go but this skill set you possess is valuable and you just need people who can truly appreciate it around you.

Agreed. I may not know you personally, but you have always struck me as someone who freely gives of himself and wants to help people. and after being in martial arts for 15+ years I have seen people come and go, but you've done it even longer, and teaching is a way to give back - which you are doing freely.

Anyone who doesn't see and appreciate that and you needs to leave. period.

I've seen schools in Kenpo, Judo, and BJJ all suffer/destroy themselves in pissing contests. Your real students would be sad that you weren't leading and teaching them anymore.

Philip, I follow you on Facebook so I've been observing this unfold for a while... The only way you've lost touch with reality is by keeping responding to these people at all. Your heart is in the right place, the opposition is doing it purely for attention. A shame that there are people caught in between, but if they choose not to support you vs. this clown, no other choice but to let them go too IMO.

The reason I responded to Trap was he was porting non stop videos I was afraid to fight him so I was just making his dream of a potential big pay day and pro career a possibility.. I knew there was no way it would happen but hoped it would I can't help but take it's personally

It sounds like you got trolled and you took the bait unfortunately, and turned words and posturing into action. Sadly this is what the PC culture feeds on.
Firstly while I admire your self sacrifice to coach for free and do things out of pocket, there are people who regard Free= No value. To these mindsets even a free cup of coffee is too expensive! Go figure.

When you are not imposing a fee, there is no perceived boundaries and the personalities who display self-entitlement, or in this case, online persona, will no doubt push the boundary to a place where you are uncomfortable, which in this case, seemed to press a few buttons. Disrespect, no regard for experience or appreciation for your sacrifices and the list goes on. Sometimes charging a fee prices out these types of jokers. These are the time wasters who keep signing up for multiple free trial classes *sigh*

Anyway, sounds like there is some gym cancer so you have to remove them as soon as possible. They will find another group to infect or fit in.

Not sure whether I'm right in this case but sharing my personal experience from encounters with these types too. Sadly they seem to be as ubiquitous as society feeds online personality disorders. Back in the day we just called them crazy and gave them the boot.

Give them the boot, it's not worth your emotional health. Having a good/family like environment/atmosphere in the gym is primarily to a good Healthy gym where people want to come train every day. A code of conduct might be good resolution. Posted for all to see. My belief when you get ride of one trouble 2 good always shows up to improve the gyms atmosphere.

I don't have any experience running a gym.

But I came from a pretty toxic family (left home at age 18) and also exited a toxic 11-year-marriage back in 2013-2014.

It's amazing how much your life changes when you cut toxic people out of your life and shut them down, when you stop letting them make their problems your problems. No quarter. Tap out of that bulls***. Let them "win" (but the prize is themselves; enjoy, assholes).

All of the guys you've described sound emotionally exhausting (especially the first one). You'd probably be better off without them in your life, however you get to that point.

Some observations:

*if you teach for free, people will oddly not value it as much, and won't commit.
*charging an affordable fee will at least keep out the leeches.
*posting a clear code of conduct on the wall, near the entrance, is never a bad idea.
*take no shit when a serious rule is violated. One warning permitted, if they mess up again, give them the boot.
*it's your house, they don't like it, they can get he f out.

Lastly,
*the gentleman in question would probably die from a cardiac arrest while wobbling to the ring.

Your school your rule mate Jiu Jitsu community shouldnt lose a good coach over a couple of clowns and if you lose the odd person over a clown trolling you you shouldnt be to worried about what comes of that as you will attract quality students based on the environment that it will set up being Drama Free.

We have had a couple I had to ask to leave over the years and whilst I was very hesitant at first and did not like having to do it once it was done it was a relief. Not only for me in knocking the drama on the head but was a huge relief for the students who are there for the right reasons not having to put up with the shit that comes along with it.

I have only recently adjusted our prices and find that has also stopped some of the drama and deters some of those time wasters that are there for the wrong reasons.

You lost me at Dr. Phil. Cut bait. It's not worth it. You have nothing to prove to anyone. If this guy is an asshat, tell him to train elsewhere and be done with it. Live your life, don't get pulled into his jack assery.

Holy shit at that amount of drama. Dr Phil? Really? You got way too involved in your student's lives.

I don't understand this paragraph:

"There were 4 guys that were friends with him that said I don't want to be involved and like and idiot I let it set untill talking to a friend back east who asked me if I would teach someone doing to one of them.. And I said no if the walked in the gym they would have a problem with them and they would either have to publicly apologize or I would beat their as out of the gym.."

So these 4 guys are now stirring more shit? If so, boot them out.

Man that is a messed up situation. For what it's worth...here is my opinion. Now keep in mind I have never been a full time instructor nor do I own a school. However I think it might help to look at this situation in an overly simplistic analogy or metaphor. Think of your students growth, and the school as part of an incredible plant or flower garden. Each plant is a student, occasionally some of the "plants" need pruning, shaping, watering, and fertilizing, this is where you come in to guide them as the instructor. Your white belts will be your saplings, they are vulnerable and do not have deep roots yet, and they can easily be killed off by external forces (ie. the drama can scare them away or turn them off to bjj.) Unfortunately as a gardener sometimes you have to take steps to remove plants. Sometimes a plant/student might just be a weed or even a diseased plant that is toxic or draining the other plants of nutrients and contributing nothing to the garden and must be removed for the sake of the other plants. As the gardener/instructor you must do what is best for the rose garden. You can not allow one diseased rose bush destroy your entire rose garden can you? dig that shit up and toss it out. It's unfortunate but not everyone can be saved or fixed. Your only hope is that with enough teaching/guidance that one day your students/Plant become will become so well established and strong that it will outgrow your garden and one day stand on it's own without assistance, (ie. become black belts).

Hopefully that made some kind of sense and wasn't complete nonsense. Basically as an instructor sometimes you have to do what's best for everyone, before it destroys the entire dynamic of the gym. Either way good luck with your situation, I wish you the best!

I have reset and realized I got rid of the dead wood and will focus efforts on those that deserve it.. If you don't want to help yourself I am done with them.. I am and idiot for getting more invested in them than they are themselves.. I am putting things in place so this never happens again..

It's funny that today another student posted a video that reminded me WHY I teach.. Timing is so funny

There is a one size fits all solution.

Stop caring what other people think.

And when someone wants to create problems with no desire to solve them then you remove them from your personal time as there is no longer a possibility of any solutions or anything productive occurring.
