I was on the Dr Phil show yesterday and I am wondering how many of you guys as instructors get people like this.. The try and be something they are not on the internet.. This guy is like 2 seperate people one in real life and the other on the internet..

I run into more and more MMA fighters and BJJ players now who obviously spend way more time posting about it then actually training. I go to events and see guys with very little actual training going out and thinking they are ready..

It is almost like a mental illness

I had one guy come to my boxing class back in the day. He said he trained in the UK for a while but was vague so he gave the impression that he had some skills. When we sparred he just spazzed like a fish out of water and displayed zero technique, all strength. I could accept that when he sparred with the advanced guys who showed him a thing or two and didn't get injured or injure him but with the other beginners, he was beating them based on spazzing. He always talked a lot about his experiences but his words didn't match his actions. Anyway, I told him to chill out and follow the techniques taught but he wouldn't comply so I asked him to find another gym.

Another incident at my boxing class, this worked in upper management senior position at a national bank. He is also a physically bigger person (around 110-120kg) who bullied the other smaller people, verbally taunting them during sparring and constantly dismissing what was being taught as ineffective until he sparred with the coaches or myself then he always took it easy or kept backing out of range (we didn't use a boxing ring to contain the space). Off the mats he was chatty and sounded like a nice, generous guy but on the mats his true nature came out. He always carried an assortment of 'self defense weapons' in his gym bag ranging from Rambo knives to ninja weapons but was chauffeured driven to and from the gym in a large European SUV... go figure. I also showed him the door.

The old sayings are true I guess, in vino veritas. In wine, women, money will show you the true colours of a man.

As you can imagine after operating my gym for 20+ years I've got some stories to tell.

Non existent when he came to the school he supposedly had a fight scheduled so I had him do a greppling tourney to show him he wasn't ready.. This is the novice division at NAGA https://youtu.be/VIMwhv18DPs
I'm guessing he was the larger man who gassed out and got Kimura-ed...

Attention seeking, bipolar, delusional and living in an alternative reality. For many who suffer from this, signing up at a local martial arts gym is attractive as it seems to validate their fantasies of masculinity and wannabe-hero that is influenced by Hollywood celluloid-pressure. As I've mentioned on other threads, they need therapy not BJJ.

Man that was tough to watch. You did a great appearance Phil. That guy is not living in the real world. Both he and his wife are delusional. I feel bad for the kids.

Martial arts tends to attract these folks. I've had my fair share of them as well.

Fascinating. Kinda reminds of the Marcelo/Dillon Danis fallout with the way you talk about there being 'two' of him.

Watching the segment, hearing what you said, I have a bigger respect for you. I do not think that was anything but truthful and caring. As far as this guy, and I do not want to even give him more attention by mentioning his name, he needs more help. I think that the attention that we give him, even negative is what he wants and we should stop. It is very clear he needs mental help with his wife and feeding these comments gives him excuses and reasons for not getting better for not achieving his dream. I look at it more from the other side like he has a substance abuse habit, any addict behaves in very similar ways.

The second part of the one posts he made where he attacked the "one arm Fighter". I am a father to a (now adult) child that has one leg, and let me tell you from my experience people with "disabilities" have way more heart and determination than anyone like that guy!

#1 reason why I do not have social media, I dislike the drama

thank you but when he insulted Nick Newell he lied to me and said it was an old post before he met me.. He didn't know I knew Nick and spoke to Nick about it.. Nick is a class act and said not to throw him out on Nick's account but I found the comment reprehensible and worse he LIED to me..

I teach the guy for free and all I do is ask him not to embarrass me and the team on social media..

I am sorry but if I say something on social media i am willing to pay the price in real life

He for sure has the wrong picture of himself who he is.....
How does he want to survive a fight in MMA when he gasses out after 3 minutes of trying to get inside position and just falling on his back getting submitted easily like in that grappling match?

Dr. Phil is still airing??? The guy looks exactly the same he did 15 years ago.

People can change if they want to, but it takes effort and consistency. This Trap guy is a narcissist. He is just in it for the attention. Mr. Dunlap was right to kick him out.

It did seem like he respects you and was taking what you said to heart. However, the way it ended, it’s pretty clear that he won’t change.

I can imagine that situation would have been super frustrating for you Phil.
At the end of the day you can't help someone who doesn't admit they need help.
Kudos for trying as hard as you did though.

I know Nick personally, he wrestled locally here and was a close friend of my daughter's wrestling coach. I assumed that he was the person that you were referring to and I agree, I have nothing but respect for Nick and would have reacted the same way you did.

That is a guy that will never get out of his own way long enough to make a better person out of himself. Unfortunately people like that are not coachable

He was insulting Nick Newell? Wtf. Nick Newell is a better fighter with one arm than 99.9% of the population with two arms. That guy is as tough as they come, and has inspired countless martial artists. I'm sorry, but if you are trolling guys like Nick Newell, you have a serious disconnect from reality.

Phil was great. You responded in the perfect way that a coach should. Great stuff.

Hopefully I can do this well if I get a student like this.

I few weeks ago I mentioned in other threads (?) that as BJJ/Martial Arts coaches, unless trained otherwise, we are not equipped or have the tools to provide therapy or psych support for members walking into the gym. If you can't then you can't. The car mechanic isn't going to provide F1 driving performance so feeling bad about this situation is unfair on yourself. Let it go or if you feel the need then seek out some training to provide counseling or psych support. That will have you diving down another rabbit hole.
