I'm looking to buy some mats to train at home. Preferably something that can be stored easily when not in use. Any recommendations?

Was also going to recommend a roll out mat. Much less hassle than jigsaw mats and more comfy too

Agree 100%
Thats what I have now and the puzzle mats I had before these rollouts sucked.

I've got a rollout, it's been an absolute lifesaver over lockdown. Until this year, I didn't have much use for it, so it lived in my attic. But over the last year, as you can imagine, it has been getting a LOT of use. Specifically I have the rollout home mats from Zebra. I'm not sure if they sell this exact model now or not, as I got it almost 10 years ago, but I did a review of it here: http://www.slideyfoot.com[...]ining.html

Ha - and I like how the angle I took the photo below makes me look like even more of a pixie man (I'm short, but not quite hobbit short: 5'7/170cm).. ;)

Thanks for the review! Do you know how well do the mats stay together with the tape?

I have a puzzle mat at the moment but its not so comfortable as a traditional judo/BJJ mat and I was thinking about the Zebra Roll out mat. The mats could stay on the floor and I dont have a need to storage it anywhere, thats why Im still thinking between roll out mat and judo mats.

No idea, I only have the one so I've never had to tape it to anything. However, I've been to gyms that use multiple similar mats and hold them together with tape, that appears to work pretty well. I know my good friend Seymour (Meerkatsu) does that for his Borehamwood gym, though I don't think he tends to read these forums much.

I got super cheap, thin puzzle mats. They are shit, but good enough for technique work. Bought them hoping that I could sell some privates and teach at home. I've trained with a few friends and former students and the wifey, but they are mostly collecting dust in the living room.

I recommend a thick roll out mat or two. You'll be able to spar on those. Maybe not full blast, but hard enough for it to feel like real training. I'd be rolling on one too if I hadn't wasted so much money on office supplies. :D

Thanks for the responses. I've decided to go with roll up mats, but I'm undecided on how thick I should go. Dollamur offers them in 3 thicknesses 1-1/4", 1-5/8", and 2". Also, should I get smooth or Tatami?

Thoughts?

I got smooth before and tatami the next time around. I like tatami better.

I got some Dollamur (flexi-roll) roll out mats from BJJHQ at the beginning of COVID and put them to use in a big way. I would suggest them for home use however if you plan to throw on them I would suggest another layer of puzzle mats below and being cognizant of the surrounding space, for obvious reasons.

Yeah those are the type I'm looking at. The ones they sold on BJJHQ are 1.25".

Smooth ones are easier to clean I think, but they are probably slippery with the gi. The tatami surface isn't really that much harder to clean, so I recommend those. Go with the maximum thickness if you can. They are way more comfortable. They take a bit more space when rolled up and are heavier too, so keep that in mind.

I'd love to have a mat area at home but I already took up half the garage with my home gym setup that is collecting dust >_>
