Almost makes me a little bit proud to have started the only Jiu Jitsu affiliation in history that has gotten banned from paying IBJJF money :D

That is actually a major accomplishment

I hope the real reason comes out someday.
I don't think there is any secret reason; they just didn't like the way I was a customer in their business. Like kicking out a customer from an all-you-can-eat buffet for eating too much. Not much else to it, I'm sure.

Well, I think everyone knows the reason given was bullshit. They know every other affiliation does the same thing, so I assumed there must be another reason. I mean, they can’t be that hypocritical right?

Every other affiliation doesn't do the same thing; they usually require payment/representation/"loyalty"/etc to sign a competition form and we didn't. For a power hierarchy to work, people have to believe in it and act like it's real. BJJ Globetrotters probably doesn't do that enough in some people's opinion and at some point we likely got too big for that to be ignored (hands down biggest affiliation in the world). Desperation often leads to strange decisions.

Good point. I was just speaking specifically about the signing for athletes that have no relationship with the black belt instructor who is signing their memberships part.

I guess you could argue that they just have a different definition of “relationship” than we do. I think that really is the core of it to be honest

A lot of people have issues defining relationship to be fair.

"relationship" = just pay me $200/month so you can advertise my name and brand in your local area, fly me in for seminars, tell your students they are only allowed to wear my merchandise/patch... Family, bro.

Bigger than Gracie Barra? I would be very surprised if that were true.

It’s true
Gracie Barra has over 700 schools associated with them and 860 Black Belts listed just on their site. Where are the numbers for Globetrotters?

So I see the individual lists on the Globetrotters website per belt but there's no totals and as it's not exportable, I don't feel like building the spreadsheet myself. Christian, can you add totals on those query pages?

Not every affiliation charges though, but for those that do, I understand why. A lot of schools use a well known person’s brand as a marketing tool. I feel that this person should reap some rewards from that use.

There is this kind of older article: https://www.bjjee.com/art[...]the-world/

There are also a good number of schools out there with dual affiliations going on. Some are even GB schools. I think if you count all affiliated schools (including dual affiliates) then bjj globetrotters are most likely the largest affiliation, worldwide.

Something also tells me that Christian probably actually has some hard data on this...

As by April 2018, Gracie Barra had 441 affiliated academies listed on the map on their website (yes, we counted all the pins). Not sure what their number is today but BJJ Globetrotters is currently at 829.

IBJJF is still the only organization that will force you to take a participation medal for non participation.

I have gotten a couple participation trophies so to speak from losing but never have I gotten one for not even competing. I kind of feel like some people might even game this system and cherry pick certain masters weight divisions to win a "world championship" with no one even in the division.

One of their tournaments I went to my opponents missed weight and another didn't show up and they force you to take a participation medal for non participation. And they offer no refund or voucher option and refuse to allow you to enter another division or face someone else. You basically just wasted all your time and money for no reason.

Why I will never sign up for another one of their tournaments except worlds or pans or something. I still would like to do worlds masters but that would be it. And still would have to find a way to be able to sign up lol

No I can’t easily do that, sorry. Also, the list of individual members is just who ever signed up themselves on the website, so that number is not necessarily very useful.

Two weekends ago, at Grappling Industries, I had a teammate in a nogi bracket with two other guys. The nogi stuff was happening later in the afternoon and the two other guys were there for gi. Well, I guess the two other guys decided not to wait around for their nogi matches and told the organizers they were leaving. GI just cancelled the bracket. Would not let my friend merge into another bracket (they said it was too late; I've only done two tournaments but NewBreed had merged someone into my bracket maybe 20 min before, so not sure why GI couldn't do it), would not give him a "participation" gold, and would not give him a refund or credit because he had competed in gi and if you compete in gi then nogi is free.

I'm new to tournaments and still forming opinions, but it seemed crappy to me. Merger, refund/credit or participation medal, he should have been offered one of the three.

I guess what I'm saying is, I think a participation medal is probably better than nothing (which is what my friend got from GI).

From my experience Newbreed is the easiest organization to work with. That might just be because I've done over 10 events with them and they know me very well by now but they will move me around within reason however I want. So it makes me very comfortable to continue to sign up to their events.

Naga being 2nd. They both will let you compete up a skill level in Gi while grappling industries will not. But you also will probably get the most matches out of grappling industries with the way they do round robin if your a beginner that most likely will lose some matches.

So I recommend doing grappling industries if your a beginner as even if you lose all your matches you will normally still get a bunch of matches at white belt. Normally.

Fuji is also very easy to work with but their brackets are unpredictable and random sometimes which can be chaotic if your OCD and want to know exactly what's going on.

IBJJF is really organized but doesn't give a shit about making sure you have a match and will not even guarantee a single match. lol so never sign up to IBJJF unless 4+ people are in the division or you may not even get a match if people don't show up or get dq'd.

Goodfight is always very small and often cancels tournaments don't even bother signing up to those.

Nuway has just started and I competed and won their first ever advanced gi divsion but it was super small and I would wait a while before giving Nuway a chance even with their new bjj fanatics sponsor it's mostly just wrestling fathers who also do jiu-jitsu that throw together a division for them while they are at the event for their kids to compete in wrestling. These are mostly thrown together as a multi-day event thing near some vacation city for family's so the kids can compete somewhere and the family can go on some vacation at the same time.

With any tournament though what I see is most companies do nogi first then Gi. When this happens people get injured or are exhausted from their nogi matches and will often pull out of their Gi matches. And I am sure the vise versa happens. So anytime you sign up for both divisions and you know that gi or nogi will go on last just be aware if you have a small division in the format that goes on last the chances of someone withdrawing from that division is fairly high. It's more common though when nogi goes on first as nogi is a higher chance of injury and exhaustion. Gi is mostly just people wearing out their forearms but they are fine otherwise. lol
