Reminds me of a video I recently saw where a woman was insisting that she be addressed as "doctor" by someone questioning her. Turns out she wasn't even a medical doctor, just a phd.

Sad how much ego there is for a supposed ego destroying art.

Professor Deepu (I might not have the stripes, but I have put in the time damn it!)

I find ANY kind of DEMANDS to be called X, Y or Z kinda silly. I get it when you ask. Or you communicate politely, e.g. "I now identify as a professor and my pronouns are prof, profs." I might comply, no harm done... but if you demand it I'll just find myself some other company.

I don't require anyone to address me as Professor, some do out of habit from coming from other gyms, but I'm happy with being addressed by my name or by Coach if they feel more comfortable with an honorific.

Does anyone of you do this as well?
Just wow. That would be a mouthful to have to be addressed as “assistant instructor x.” Also would be weird to be addressed as “fighter x”. The only place where I’m accustomed to being addressed according to my degree is in my office by my patients.

As a joke, if I ever became president, it would be obnoxiously fun to be called Doctor President

In Spain you don't have to take your hat off before the King if you have a PhD. Just saying :)

In Finland I think PhDs get a sword too. That’s freaking awesome

For real? That is so absurd, it's cool.

Correct. Except you don't get shit, you have to get it yourself. Borrowing is a good option, since the sword costs €350 and basically the only official event to wield it is when you graduate yourself. And already the PhD hat costs about €750. By the way we have a stupid color-coded system for those, not unlike BJJ belts... PhD in Medical Science gets a green hat, Arts blue, Theology purple, Philosophy black, Law red...

Not yet but I'm gonna get my black belt with a white bar, so I can demand everybody to call me only "Fighter" instead of my name, inside & outside the gym.

That's a ridiculous price for a hat. The sword is suspiciously cheap. I doubt the quality. :D

That’s a bummer. If you earn the sword you should have the option of carrying it everywhere.

I'd go by "The Warrior who Goes from Conquest to Conquest Leaving Fire in his Wake", but it's already taken. In other African news, Robert Mugabe has an honorary black belt in something. Interesting read about ridiculous titles: https://www.bbc.com/news/[...]a-33245094

I asked if I could have "Superstar" as my official title when the admin at work was ordering new badges... Sadly they said no :(

Seeing black belts of various disciplines insisting people call them professor/master/mestre/sensei/sifu/etc is absolutely cringe worthy, and the height of arrogance. We're all adults, doing a bit of consensual violence - let's not make it any weirder than it has to be.
