We had someone dislocate a knee the other night while training. This person was practicing the mechanics of a throw (tai otoshi) when it happened, but it wasn't to the leg you would have thought (the leg going across the uki) but to the planted leg. We weren't even doing the actual throw, just the fit-ins. It was the craziest injury I've ever seen in training considering what was happening at the time.

What's the weirdest injury you've seen in relation to what was happening to cause the injury?

One of my friend's finger got caught in a gi and somehow got twisted so that it broke in several spots. He needed surgery where they had to install a metal implant. I know finger injuries are not weird and are way too common, but a complete twisted fracture made no sense.

A friend of mine tore his chest while defending an armbar. That's what happens when you roll with strong white belts without warming up properly.

Ugh, that's awful. I dislocated my pinky finger sparring. It was pretty gnarly.

I was submitting a guy with the bear trap and popped my own knee. So there's that. :D

Other freaky stuff I've witnessed include dislocated ankles, patellas and broken radius due to attacking a guillotine or a foot lock. It was also kinda freaky to see Vinny Magalhaes break his leg by not tapping to a heel hook. You'd think the ligaments give out first.

Something giving out during a submission is expected. Disheartening and frightening to watch, but somewhat expected. I even saw a guy "glove" his big toe at a tournament when his toe got stuck in the mats. But again, kind of expected as the mats weren't taped together (this was in 1998).

I saw (and heard) a guy break his femur trying to retain guard at a tournament, the general consensus amongst my team was he must have had some underlying condition because that shouldn't just happen.

This has happened to me too! Tore my left pec when defending a straight arm bar. My buddy was trying to get my arm Marcelo Garcia style from seated butterfly. I hooked my hand on my inner thigh so he couldn't get it. He's stronger than an ox and my pec tore. I have a nice hole in my left pec near my shoulder as a souvenir.

A training buddy popped his knee & tore his LCL from performing knee scissors choke off kimura. Choke not properly on the neck to get the tap, and squeezing the legs straight while something solid in between them caused the knee to give out. (I've actually been wary of this move ever since, he was out for a long time.)

Most of my injuries have been kinda weird.

Worst one was cracking a rib (a proper break; it still sticks out) defending a pass of a much lighter guy, just curling up and breathing out while some pressure was applied from an unfortunate angle.

Broke my big toe when a partner butt scooted directly into it (he had a hard ass).

Dislocated my knee cap while doing an over/under pass in a comp, tripoding up and I guess turning my leg made the pressure come from a angle that caused the leg to collapse with loud pops.

I think there's a lot of truth to this statement in general. When I think about it, same with most of mine. It's the unexpected shit that causes bad injuries. If a throw is done properly, you can do nice ukemi and you're fine. If you get an unorthodox throw, good luck. Hence the reason we should be wary of the 200lb jacked white belt.

In 11 years of operations there has only been 1 major injury in our gym that didn't occur during a throw or takedown and that was a guy who shattered his foot in Muay Thai when he hit a guy's elbow. But even then there's really only been 4 or 5 which I guess isn't too bad.

One guy managed to sandwich his big toe between the jigsaw mats during a roll in the middle of defending a takedown. His toe broke and the surgeons had to reattach the ligament. Another had a similar big toe injury to to hyperflexion and I had to pop in back into place. I also have the same injury from 2019 that hasn't healed properly. No tigers were caught in any of the incidents :(

Had a weird one happen to me last week. I was talking with my family and went to point at something. There was a loud snapping sound from my right shoulder. Felt okay immediately afterward but the next day and until today I can barely move my right arm. I have an ultrasound imaging booked for Thursday. FML!

Ah the joys/pains of the elder jiu jitsuka. You have to warm up before making any sudden movements like pointing, what were you thinking.

it broke off. the whole toe.
was just hanging on the foot by a thin piece of skin/flesh.
bone visible n shit.

also i once dislocated a thumb during a match and kinda bitch slapped it back in place mid match....

also once drained about 12 ml blood from one of my thighs after getting hit by a knee and being pretty much crippled for a week. thought thats it im done for... but 3 days after draining i was fine again

those were probably the weirdest i remember

I blew out my back two days ago by picking a star wars figure up off the floor.

Lesson learned.

Don't point at stuff. Don't pick up stuff.

I tore my Psoas demonstrating a basic butterfly hook sweep. I have no idea why it tore. Doesn't seem like it should have. Anyway, I was in agony and I had to keep teaching the lesson. lol. I couldn't sit because if the pain. My only relief was standing up perfectly straight. I had to wear pants to bed for a month so the when I got in to bed or rolled over, I could grab on to the pants and physically move my leg. Worst!
