He was in town today. As per all of his black belt and stripe promotions, I had to demonstrate all the stand up self-defense techniques to him and pass his evaluation.

Well, Relson doesn't follow IBJJF time schedules. Last time I raised that, Christian wanted me to wait until IBJJF dates to log the promotion.

If Relson says you are a 3rd degree black belt who the f*ck cares what IBJJF has to say about it. Strange that belt checker would have an opinion one way or the other.

That’s surprising, as I thought IBJJF was somewhat dismissed here.

If Relson has promoted you using his own system then promotion is promotion surely ?

I am not sure how he handles all the degrees, but he does every two years for the first few. That needs to be coordinated with his visits to the academy or our visits to where he is. Due to Covid, things were on hold for a while. Once you see him you have to the self-defense test and then if you pass that you get the stripe.

Relson's striping is not time based, it's test based (as Josh is pointing out). There are Relson Black Belts near us that have been Black Belts for what we would consider way less time than if they were under anyone else. Different systems for different coaches.

Yes specially the Gracies follow test based or a much shorter time between degrees than IBJJF. I dont understand why many are now following the IBJJF system

You should know the answer to that as a brown belt.
