Gracie jiu-jitsu = traditional aspect of the art
Brazilian jiu-jitsu = competition-based grappling art

So by this logic if you do a bit of both then you practice Gracie Brazilian jiu-jitsu / GBJJ ?

When does a martial art become 'traditional'? For example, 'vintage' is accepted as most things more than 30 - 80 (?) years old and beyond that it's 'antique'.

Never trained at a Gracie gym and don't really place any importance on trying. So I guess that means no.

Gracie BJJ = a trademarked brand. Only people authorized to use the term can call it Gracie Jiujitsu. How they train may be exactly how you currently train but that doesn't mean you are training Gracie Jiujitsu.

Hy Vince! Hope you are ok?
For me personally "traditional" means "old school"(style wise) and with self defense. So i describe our approach "traditional" to inform people, who are interested in Jiu Jitsu/ BJJ and would like to train with us, what they expect and what the main focus of our training time is. As you know first hand, because we trained and rolled together on various occasions, that we do of course sparring/ rolling too, but the training isn't first and foremost to compete.

My Jiu Jitsu is patchwork anyway, as i learned from Teachers like you from Rigan Machado Lineage, but also Carlos Gracie Jr. , Mauricio Gomes Lineage, Arlans Siqueira Lineage and Royce Gracie Lineage.

Greetings to KL, Mirco

Rickson Gracie was making this distinction. Marketing? Promoting the Gracie brand? Trying to make it "traditional"?

If you think you're training Gracie Jiujitsu, try putting that on your sign and let me know how long it is before you get a "cease and desist" letter. Saying you do Gracie Jiu-Jitsu when you are not, in fact, given permission to do so is the equivalent of making your own soda and saying you make Coca-Cola. It's a brand. It's not about how you train. It's a brand.

For me traditional jiu jitsu wouldn’t be Gracie. It would be the traditional Japanese variant which including true self defence to be used as hand to hand combat in warfare.

Gracie’s and Brazilian jiu jitsu dates back to around the 1920’s, the word jiu jitsu was first recorded as used back in 1532.

I agree that the modern day Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is more sport orientated but based on the traditional self defence and combative legacy as many sports today.

Until adopting Western methods, Japan never had much military success, nor martial prowess, outside of some fluke wins against Korea.

If it was not for the weather patterns, Japan would have been a minor Mongol Empire colony.

Prior to Kano, who was a student of all things Western, it is unlikely "Jiu-Jitsu" played any role, in any warfare.

Of course, Judo is a very nice amalgamation of western wrestling, sumo wrestling (a derivative import of Mongol belt wrestling), and various other martial disciplines Kano studied along the way from everywhere else.

Although, the Samurai folklore and fairy tales are entertaining enough, in an Arthurian fables kind of way.

And who does not love a good fairy tale, if it is told well, particularly ones with scary endings, which sadly enough, have mostly gone out of fashion.

Well, come to Florida, and I shall make sure that you have mats to train on,
And put you on kayaks, in the gulf, or the swamp, as you prefer,
fishing, or just kayaking,
and we can go hunt a pig,
or shoot some guns, and/or airguns,
and I will fill you full of meat, or seafood and do my best, to make sure you do not fit into your pants when you leave.

That said, you all might want to wait a couple months.
First, Florida heat can be cruel, and it will be cooler in two months.
And second, we are up to our ears in COVID19, our hospitals are wibble wobbling on capacity, and we seem to have the delta variant flexing.
So....
Probably best to give it 3 weeks to 3 months to let our COVID19 situation play out.
We don't know, how it is going to play out, at the moment.

I am sorry I don't care about names to me it's sqaushing people and twisting stuff.. To me in BJJ the whole argument is based on an attempt to stay relevant when the sport / art you started has actually passed you by. That is just my OPINION..

It actually reminds me of traditional martial arts when the talk about how the UFC isn't really fighting. They don't even train with contact how the hell do they know what fighting is

Gracie iis the fmaily name which is traditionally attached to different "schools" of JiuJitsu. JiuJitsu is a broad term akin to "Kung-fu" so Gracie (or any other name) just connotes that family's unique take on it.

When Rorion trademarked it and started making people pay to use it, Brazilian came into common parlance (kinda F'd that one up).

Gracie is not traditional. It is derivative of Judo which is derivative of traditional JiuJitsu.

The term traditional is traditionally (ha!) applied to arts more than 100 years old that are not designed/ refined specifically for competition. Modern arts generally start with Judo and Muay Thai. But there is no specific rule or categorization schema.

Here's the thing.
President tries to tell everybody what to do.
The Florida Governor tells him to piss off, we're gonna do what we have to do for our State situation.
Florida Governor tells the Florida municipalities what to do.
The Florida Sheriffs and local school boards and health departments, tell him to piss off, we're gonna do what we have to do for our local municipalities.
Municipalities tells the residents what to do.
The residents mostly say f*** that, catch us if you can.
My wife tells me what I have to do.
And...I do it because I wanted to, not because she told me I had to.
I don't want a motorcycle. Seriously, guys, I don't want one. Not even a little bit...
Damn it....

Delta variant: It's for one of the other instructors at the gym. May or may not work depending on a variety of factors including, but not limited to:

Blood type
Age
Prior experience to bullshit (Bullshit meter)

Yes but my wife outsmarted me. I had not ridden in years and we moved to Vegas (year round good weather) and I mentioned I was thinking of riding again. Her reaction sounds like fun.

Go out get vintage Indian fix up and after riding for a little over a year sell bike at profit because after about a dozen near death experiences decided fighting is much safer
