What are your academy’s requirements for kids to advance in rank? I’ve seen some, where things like knowing how to fold the gi is listed as a requirement, another listed learning several words of Portuguese, or preforming 20 reps of technical stand ups which sound more like a fitness test, it there a generally accepted curriculum out there? Apologies if this question was asked previously

Ours isn't that different than the adults in that it kind of just comes down to "Tap the kids in the line in front of you".

But the bare requirement is knowing how to tie your belt without help. Can't get promoted if you can't tie your own belt. We have a 2 year max time for the first belt (gray/white) so regardless of skill at 2 years we will promote them.

This is, from what I hear, not the norm.

Learning words in Portuguese, makes me cringe and think about my childhood Taekwondo career where everything was in Korean for no reason + I'm sure no Korean would ever understand a single word of what we said in 80s suburban Copenhagen.

If the kids have been on the mat regularly and have been putting in effort we stripe them every 3 months or so, then new belt after 4 stripes.
If they're showing extra commitment / advanced skill developement / pure talent we'll stripe or belt earlier.

Omoplata & Porra should be enough!

We don’t do kinds ranks, but time based seems entirely the norm. There’s a lot of kids belts, so pretty much need to be hitting a stripe every few months, and belt per year.
The occasional outlier will progress faster, but age caps quickly limit that.

We promote kids based strictly on attendance, and we follow the ibjjf guidelines on that.

SEPARATE, YET RELATED QUESTION: what do y'all do when a kid who received a kids' belt turns 16 (or who returns to the mat at some point as an adult) but their BJJ is too garbage to promote to blue. Do they just keep wearing their kids belt until they are good enough? Do you have them put on a white belt? Something else?

I have them put on a white belt.

Ages 4 through 10, promotion is based on attendance. Eleven years and up: attendance, attitude and diligence. We follow the IBJJF belt guidelines as to what age they can receive the more advanced level kids' belts (Orange through Green). Growing kids learn and develop at very different rates, and I see a large part of my job as encouraging them to keep coming "no matter what." The stripe system is a great aid and enticement in that regard. I have to say that it's incredibly satisfying watching freshly graduated (16 yr old) green belts put adult blue belts into deep water.

On the "separate matter," Teen green belts keep wearing their earned belt until ready for Blue, however long that may be. Prodigal adult students wear a white belt. I have yet to see any adult want to ... or more realistically be small enough to ... tie their old orange belt around their waist. :)

Some interesting thoughts here, and I have to say that while discipline, consistent attendance and respect are super important for kids, I have to say that technical ability is still really important in a world where there kids get trophies for coming in last... I understand the idea of motivation and trying to keep them inspired, but I feel that when a child actually understands the value from something they have earned, it does way more for character development, confidence and the value of hard work.

We've only ever given out a green belt at my gym once in 10 years of offering kids classes. I've given out three orange belts and all three of those kids won Kids Pans medals at gray and/or yellow belt first. If I don't think a kid could win a match at Kids Pans at their belt level then they can wait for that belt. And a green belt kid is, in my opinion, closer to a purple belt in skill level than a blue belt.

We lose kids all the time to other gyms that have easier belt achievements. Especially kids that moved here and are already wearing a colored belt that don't do well in their first class. That isn't the kids making that choice, it's the parents. The parents who understand what we're trying to do stay and love it. I would rather have that then dumb things down to get more kids and make more money.

We have a curriculum they have to know in order to get each belt, it's all technique based with the exception of knowing how to tie the belt being required for the first promotion. They get stripes for attendance and can test for the belt when they have enough classes after the 4th stripe on the current belt.

Ugh....I gotta be honest I hate this. I hate "testing". Hate. It. It's basically Judo now.

Understandable, but they also spar starting from standing every class. And we don't do testing for adult belts.
