Is time enough for a black belt to promote another or does he need stripes?

So generally for a black belt to promote another he needs to be one for six years to get the stripes. But where is the true hierarchy? Is it in the stripes or the time served.

Also is there really any difference between someone giving you the stripe or claiming it yourself?

It should be both, i.e. time served AND you are given the stripes by someone who can. The goal of this is to stop new black belts from suddenly dishing out a whole bunch of new black belts ... which to be honest, has happened, will continue to happen and is inevitable. IBJJF's ridiculous requirements for getting stripes however is only going to make more and more people abandon the whole criteria imo.

Pretty sure awarding yourself black belt degrees by adding stripes yourself would be heavily frowned upon, even if you’ve served the time in rank; time to go see your Professor who promoted you last, or whom you are training with now.

I suspect however their might be people in this community of sufficient rank and willingness to help someone out with a degree stripe if time served was evident with a verified profile on this site, and it was made clear that there was no other access to your previous instructor anymore.

IBJJF allow exactly this, though.

But if the only criteria for getting another degree added to your belt is to avoid dying for 3 years, why do you need a dude to add the degree for you? Does anybody know any 3rd degree black belts (or higher) who have any criteria at all, other than just staying alive and paying them money, that they would require from a prospective 1st degree black belt?

There is a catch though. The criteria is actually that you have to stay alive AND maintain a relationship with either someone higher in the pyramid OR the IBJJF.

That was until Beltchecker was created, of course.

And Beltchecker allows stripes by time and tons of verified blackbelts there have claimed it :)

I suppose the IBJJF just assumes that you've been promoted by said special person?

What I'm curious about is if anybody has like, a lineage tradition (for lack of a better term) where their promoting 3rd/4th (whatever) black belt actually asks them to do anything other than stay alive and pay/affiliate with (etc) in order to earn that next stripe?

Technically I qualify for my 2nd stripe but I haven't claimed it via Beltchecker. I just realised that I'm in the Resistance :)

He's not alone. I would feel silly grading myself.

Nope. As long as you’re a certified black belt with the IBJJF then you can claim your degrees based on time with them. No instructor needed. I could email them today and claim my 3rd degree IBJJF certificate with them if I wanted to. No promotion or signature required.

Only need to pay them some money but you already know the ins and out of that, I remember :D

You’re probably more the norm, I think. I imagine most people would also resist giving themselves stripes based on how many years they’ve paid membership to IBJJF. But each to their own :)

So basically: "Pay us $$$, complete some courses which are $$$ and we'll happily approve your ranks."

Such bullshit. Grand scale McDojo, IMO.

Here yo go
Interesting that a background check, as well as a safe sport completion, is not on their list. I feel that these two things are the most important. Maybe they weren't required in 2020?

When I was a white belt or perhaps even a new blue belt, I remember Roy Harris talking about black belt degree promotions.

He basically said it was a 3 year requirement provided that you were actively teaching and/or regularly training and competing during those entire 3 years. He definitely left the impression that it wasn’t just a date on a calendar, and that’s why a higher belt had to award the rank - basically verifying/certifying that you remained active and deserved the promotion. Inactive years didn’t count towards the 3 year requirement (or the 5 or more for the higher degrees of black belt).

I don't want to grade myself and prefer getting the award/recognition via my coach.
I have no need to accelerate or want the next stripe as it won't change anything about my education about this sport but I understand at this stage of the game, it's no longer about me, rather it's my service to others to help them through my 'time in rank' (if that makes sense) when a stripe-ier black belt awards their next belt/stripe, it's more 'validated'. The next stripe is just a piece of plastic tape which doesn't match the colour of my eyes.

Because I don't live in 'Murica. I'm sure the IBJJF staff in California don't wanna deal with figuring out the equivalent of your system in French Caribbean or Denmark.

No the requirement is that you pay them for 3 years.. they only count years you've been an "active" black belt. (Paid your IBJJF membership) they won't recognize degrees otherwise and therefore won't recognize BB you've given

Not at black belt, but I ran into a similar situation. I had a student that had been training with me for several years(I got my purple belt shortly before he started with me), and due in part to switching associations, etc, and he was ready to be promoted to purple belt. I messaged my instructor and asked him when he was here next time, if he would do the honor of promoting my student. He did so, and problem solved.
