Anyone who sees that thread is likely already a Beltchecker aficionado. How should the world be changed so there would be more of us?

Shoot! :)

main issue that not many people under the age of 30 Even know what forums is anymore.
Facebook newsfeeds /timelines feeds have become the new normal.

Everyone is in for the instant gratification and instant information access.. If we had some type of live access it might help but it will also be an issue

but possible doing something that will allow users to upload videos of something they are having problems with and higher belts ( designated one) be able to troubleshoot their issues live.

(Actually ppl under 30 are getting OFF Facebook. They have TikTok, Instagram, maybe Twitter... and REDDIT is basically a huge forum, so I don't agree that forums don't have a place). Technique troublehsooting is a nice idea.

Keep 'em coming!

well you got me on the reddit.. but i would really consider the last of the dying bread. I actually didnt know anything about reddit until a couple of years ago and im in the IT field. i still roam a few of my old forums that i moderate but its slimming down and alot of them shut down and went to fb groups because its instant responses.

Speaking of shooting.... we seem to get the most new members whenever the IBJJF shoots themselves in the leg.

Mobile app and memes are always good to get more people interested. We dont' have a social media account for the forum do we?

Are we talking boost the forum or more generally boost the number of registered belts?

Regarding the forum, anonymity might go a long way with people posting more. Perhaps have a separate forum for those who are unregistered? Yes it will lead to trolls etc, but might boost numbers.

It's a combination of lack of verified profiles overall and minimal emphasis placed on the forum on the landing page. Leads to reduced overall participation. If the site wants to be more of an active community than an alternate verification solution, they need to invest in and market the discussions forums more than they are today.

I'd love to see it, personally. r/bjj has become an echo chamber of former-DDS repostings and people hyping their YT videos and seminar streams. Would be nice to get back to helping people solve problems and challenges.

Around 8000 verified profiles who have access to posting in the forums, so I don't think that's the issue :)

It's obvious that drama drives traffic. People love that shit. And there's just not drama all the time to keep forums boiling; which is completely normal and expected.

However, even in these periods where the forum is not super active, user adoption of the site is still very stable. Steadily registering quite many new members every day since launch, so the platform is self sustainable in that area at least :)

You're right in that my statement was too broad. I should have said "actively engaged" verified profiles. Most of the ones I click on haven't logged in for months, typically once verified they drop off a cliff until the next promotion.

Glad to have a sustainable model to date either way. There could be more emphasis on the forums or other methods of engagement, I suppose, if that's something you were trying to pursue.

I also think there's a bit of a missed opportunity in how we hype the site itself. When I get asked about Beltchecker, I don't even mention the voting. I just say it's the BJJ Facebook. When at least for me is the reason I come to the site.

I agree to everything :) It could be nice to have a more active forum and with time, I also do think we will put more focus on it for instance on the front page. At the moment, I still think the core functionality of the site is to create a trustworthy database of practitioners, so that is the focus right now. You're right that many people disappear once they've created their profile, then to return when they're promoted. At least that's a very good sign that people come back to keep their profiles up to date with their belt promotion history. We can also see this in the user statistics.

I guess the best we can do for the forum is to start some kind of drama. Anyone up for promoting themselves or something? :D

Obviously you just need to invite and validate legends like James Paredes, Jay Queiroz, and David Lang.

Maybe bring along some "alternative" thinkers like Dan The Wolfman (who I was er.. fortunate enough to have at our gym for a month or two before he was kicked out) for extra attention.

Sprinkle in some TLI and a little Fight Sports and you've got yourself a Controversy Stew, baby!

Originally with the post I also actually thought the overall platform. While Christian cites a steady growth, the rate of actual amount of active members growing seems to have slowed down.

(ACTIVE = members who visit frequently enough to participate also in voting system thereby enabling further growth of platform).

I think one thing that would definitely give the site a kick is if we had a group of higher ranked users who took the initiative to vote for strangers. The more votes/verifications we have, the more active the site is. Of course, it's a personal preference if anyone want to do that or not with their voting power.

That's not for strangers only - if MORE people would be active there would be MORE people who would vote for the people they actually know.

The userbase being reliant on just a core group who is willing to make decisions based on profiled data only is a bottleneck.

To this effect the academy instructor / coach / etc. requirements are excessively stringent when you think of how pod/regionalized the site is today.

I can't single-handedly validate 3+ blue belts from my school, but there are very few people on here from our region, so I can't get anyone to sign up since we don't have enough votes to validate the students, which stops validating me as a coach, which stops.....

Gotta take one for the team!
I'll take one for the team after tomorrows tournament if you want. Will be my 40th tournament and going to calm down a little bit after. I am getting to old lol.

Of course this would only be in the beltchecker universe. I would still be wearing my real belt everywhere I train. Does that ruin the imaginary fun of it all?

I actually think it would be more fun to just wear a white belt everywhere honestly. Got to do that last week in Florida when traveling and the instructor didn't tell anyone I was a blue belt. That's where the fun is at. Confusion not Anger. lol Confusing people is way more fun than making someone angry or bitter.

People have "complained" about this since day one, but statistics proves this wrong. 96% of all completed profiles are verified, so it's not a matter of "I don't know anyone here" or "there's nobody here in my area" (look through the forum and you'll find looots of these posts). It's simply a matter of creating a well documented profile, then it WILL be verified by the community. The data proves this very clearly :)

Curious question has anyone ever seen The Postman and is it worth re-watching after 20 years? lol

To this end, if there was a more "formal" set of requirements - like if X black belts were willing to vote on profiles that explicitly met requirements A/B/C and there was a specific sub-forum for asking for verification provided those things I think that would provide a few avenues:

1. It could establish the group of higher ranked users by being open to anyone who wanted to visit to vote
2. It would encourage forum interaction for new members who may not otherwise come in because they otherwise can't use it to beg for votes

You could even start with a "Beg for Votes" forum where the people who are willing to verify others they don't know personally can start threads with their personal requirements to use that people could respond to with questions as simple as "what am I missing?" which would then prompt the subscribers of that forum to see who that person is.

I still get PMs asking for votes on the regular

My coach has been a black belt for almost 2 months. Very well documented profile, but still not verified. I don't have any stats to back it up, but it seems like the more members we get, the slower verifications take.

IMO the crux of the issue is very little user engagement or reward for being here. The objective is to get verified, then.....? There really isn't an external motivator for continued engagement beyond the verification of your current belt. A number of folks even got verified early on, and simply haven't come back even after getting promoted.

At the very least, a more complete virtual rewards system could potentially drive more engagement. If you verify X amount of profiles you get X amount of points for a leaderboard or access to a special forum with seminars..etc. Perhaps badges on profiles to signify levels of community involvement. (just throwing out ideas here)

Hello, I have not read the whole thread, also not sure if what i'm about to suggest
had been suggested before.

I like the feature "log in training hours" how about including position based

like Drilling with drop down selection of specific techniques.... which would be added as one of chart data.

I like to see what position I have been working on for the past month, and which movement I could give more attention.

another would for sparring, how did i win or lose? the chart functionality is useful for this for addressing weaknesses.
That would eat a lot of resources though so I think can only retain a month's worth of data before resetting.
