So we all know IBJJF is a raging, dumpster fire, but this is what is currently happening.
I'm a 1st degree BB, Certified IBJJF (i waited a year to register my bb, so my 2nd degree that i'm eligible for right now, they wouldn't recognize until Dec 2022) and i apparently can't grade a brown belt? I have black belts under me that i belted with my professors permission (Nic Gregoraides, 3rd degree) so they are listed under him. It looks like right now even he can't sign off on the black belts. Luckily i had mine registered (as a competitor) years back so these new "rules" apparently don't apply.
I wrote them to ask why i can't sign off on a brown belt, here is the response. Speaking with other high ranking belts, they have the same problem;
Dear Michael Desrosiers,
Thank you for contacting IBJJF.
The membership form of an athlete graded in belts of White, Gray, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple and Brown must be signed by an IBJJF affiliated Black Belt professor.
Certified Second Degree Black Belts can sign for first-time Black Belts who have had previous registration with IBJJF as Brown Belt. Certified Second Degree Black Belts can also sign for Provisional Brown Belts (Brown Belts who were never registered with IBJJF as Purple Belt).
Black Belt athletes without previous registration as Brown Belt will need to be registered under a certified Third Degree or higher Black Belt instructor and will be considered Provisional for two years from the start of their first membership.
Provisional athletes are able to compete in IBJJF tournaments, but must remain under the same certified instructor throughout their two-year provisional period. In order to change academies, Provisional athletes will need to restart their two-year provisional period under a different instructor who has enough IBJJF certified degrees to be able to sign for the Provisional athlete.

I don't understand any of that and am now even more confused than before. LoL. I mean, the first paragraph qualifies you, but as you read you become disqualified and then qualified again and somehow not allowed to switch academies or instructors for years or you can't be legitimate. I do not understand what the hell is going on with the IBJJF and that's why I don't compete in any of their events. I did a Masters World once, for fun, as a blue belt. It wasn't this complicated. Now as a purple, I'm scared to try again. LoL

Nic, as a 3rd degree, can sign off on any belts though, right? Even new black belts who never registered as purple or brown.
What they seem to want, to avoid provisional status, is for ppl to register as purple belt and stay registered (paying yearly subscription) indefinitely

Yeah, I don't get it, so I registered as a provisional Brown belt in 2019, then in September 20', I was promoted to Black belt by Nic G who at the time was certified as a 3rd degree, then we switched affiliations and they are messing with Nic G's certification status. Seems odd, everyone knows when he was promoted, and by Roger Gracie. So it has kind of messed all of us up who are under Nic G. IBJJF is trash, it's not even an official governing body.

it is a complete shit show.... and to add to that.. I had Main professor sign off on my sheet and they rejected because he didnt sign it exactly how he signed it when registered. SO i had to get him to resign the sheet just to get it accepted.
for them it doesnt even matter if the signing black belt is your professor or not. it just has to be a 3rd degree or higher that is registered with the IBJJF.

Nic probably just never paid the money to certify his 3rd degree with the IBJJF (check here: https://ibjjf.com/certifi[...]lack-belts), so he can certify black belts that were already registered as brown belts for at least one year, but not provisional black belts who were never registered. While he's a 3rd degree in practice, he wasn't listed as one when we were under JJB and it doesn't seem like he's listed as one now. It's almost certainly just a matter of paperwork/money that he has to do with the IBJJF. Having said that, he's also listed as being Roger Gracie Academy still, so I don't know if he's planning to register Subconscious as an affiliation on its own or if Roger should be doing paperwork?
It's probably worth just asking Nic about though since all I can really say is what the IBJJF makes publicly available.

seems easier to get a passport or national ID card than to be registered as a black belt with IBJJF

ELI5 why someone shoud still be interested in IBJJF and their bullying :)
You pay a lot of money for registration and to affiliate your school. They bully you around about your black belt degree. If you are in scarcely populated age/belt/weight divisions, you pay three digits to go to a tournament where you'll get one or two matches. Annual fees and so on. And it still is a private entity, not a governing body. So, why?

I have to be honest the ONLY reason I even registered with them was to compete no way am I paying them to "certify" my belt. I had no qualms about paying 35.00 to certify here as I felt that I was supporting the Beltchecker/Globe Trotter idea and I like what they are trying to do and it was reasonable.
The IBJJF is and attempt to monetize and control a sport / martial art. and that is something I don't like.

Yep i only certified to be able to give my students the option to compete/certify if they wished down the road, it's a pain in the ass.

You do not need to certify in order to sign for your students to compete. Just need a regular membership.
I feel like I’m repeating myself here :D :D

The big IBJJF tourneys (Worlds/Euros/Pans) are the only comps where one can get 4-match brackets in the Master divisions (I think I had even 5 in Master Worlds as M2 blue; over 40 competitors). The only reason I bother.

Michael, Ive been on this IBJJF certification adventure as you have for years too and i’m also behind in their eyes…I’m due in less than a year for my 2nd degree but based on IBJJF, i’m two years away from it…It’s truly a broken system!!!

Exactly why some other martial arts have a million belts and you can buy your way into a martial arts hall of fame in a number of organizations.

I'm in the same boat. Let my dues lapsed in between a few years and only now am I eligible for my 2nd with the IBJJF although I'm a 3rd.
Their system makes no sense. Even Royler couldn't get them to budge and he is one of their Hall of Famer's.
Another thing they have wrong is my registration with them. I registered in 2009 with them but they insist it was 2010.
I filled in the paperwork and sent it in the day after I was promoted in 2009. It's a joke.

I hate the IBJJF.
Their ruleset is contributing to the watering down of BJJ. Turing it in to something that can't be used as a fighting art.
I'm old. I was involved in Tae Kwon Do as the World Tae Kwon Do Federation became dominant and set up the ruleset for the Olympic Games. The old school knockdown schools were very quickly forced to take on the ruleset of the WTF. TKD is now an absolute JOKE. I watch the Olympics and cry.
Judo was the very same way. Check out Judo before the 1964 Olympics. It is a shadow of what it was before.
Anyway, mergh!!! Olden times were better!!! Get off my lawn!!!

Just curious, whose rule set do you prefer to the ibjjf's?
I enjoy judo. Yes, there are a crap ton of rules lol. Overall though, it's helped to enrich my understanding of bjj, and judo competitions are SUPER fun and exciting imo.

I have no interest in giving money to the IBJJF for anything. They are a complete shit show, and I’ve been hearing these same stories repeated for years.
They are certainly NOT any kind of actual governing body, and there are plenty of tournaments for those who want to compete without supporting their bullshit.

This is from the IBJJF Website:
The IBJJF Black Belt Certification is the process that recognizes Black Belts who have met the requirements, and can also recognize the number of degrees the Black Belts hold. The Black Belt Certification process is separate from the Membership process. Black Belts must have active, non-provisional membership to start the certification process.

Usually my own. ;-)
I much prefer the ADCC rulesets for gi or no gi. I disagree with their No crucifix rule. I'm not a fan of spiking, but... maybe we keep that one. I waffle. Likely keep that one, because of potential for injury.
I MIGHT go for no heel hooks for white belts... maybe.
