In the promotion history, who do you think should be listed, the person that awarded the belt or the one who gave the last stripe?

I recently saw a profile that the individual was promoted to blue belt by a black belt and has photos with that black belt as evidence. He has recently updated his promotion history listing another black belt who I assume awarded his last stripe. The promotion date did not change and no notes were included.

Obviously, it doesn't change his rank, but I feel it can be a little misleading. I think we should list who promoted us to that belt with possibly a note to identify who gave the stripes.

I understood it that I should list the teacher who promoted me to the actual belt.

I agree. The person that awarded the belt should remain the name associated with that belt

usually just write in the comments on the page to NOT update for stripes and just for belts. this will cause them to need to be verified each time they update it. its only suppose to be for belts

if you just add a stripe it doesn't trigger reverification
only if you change a date or name

I list who promoted me to that belt and comment under it if needs be, during my blue belt I changed teams my new coach gave me a blue belt certificate dated from when I joined his team, although he has done every stripe and belt promotion since I don’t list him as the promoting instructor as it wouldn’t be true

It didn't even occur to me that people would list stripes. But yeah, it makes the most sense to just list who gave you the belt. Stripes aren't used by a lot of schools and I guess aren't really promotions since you would still be in the same division.

I'd say always list who tied the belt around you, with the caveat that if that person needs authorization themselves (such as someone who isn't yet a black belt doing a blue/purple/brown belt promotion, or someone who's not yet 2nd degree black belt doing a black belt promotion) then also note in the comments who is the authorizing individual.

Changing who promoted you for stripes feels sketchy, like you're trying to hide who did the promotion initially.

Agreed.
