Green belts for adults. Or for what it matters, any kind of intermediate graduation between white and blue belt for adults. For example if I'm not wrong, SBGi Kavanagh uses white - white with a blue line - blue with a white line before the blue belts for adults.
Certain schools have them, certain schools have them not.
What are your ideas about? I confess sometimes I play in my mind with the idea of introducing them in my gym.

I mean, there are Stripes which are intermediate steps before the next "colour". Maybe it motivates some people, because this way you get a "new" belt faster. But that would be the wrong approach in my opinion as a little blue.

In the Ribero lineage, using a yellow, orange and then green belt between white and blue was very much in the judo tradition, and each had a very specific curriculum with techniques to make you a "rounded" blue belt by the time you earned your blue belt.
If you have a specific curriculum then I think they are useful for adults to work through etc, but if you don't have that curriculum then additional belts may be harder to implement or at least more then 1 intermediate belt between the 2.

Using a Green belt as an adult.... can fit perfect if you have Green eyes or be trully exceptionnal if you're a sexy redhead women.
At the end of the day every school do what she want.

My first gym was a Lovato Jr. Affiliate and I went through the white, 4 stripes, yellow, orange, green and then Blue in my first 2 years. Each promotion had a set curriculum that grew all the way up to blue. I really liked the way they did it. It kept you accountable and kept you moving forward and really sinking in the fundamentals. By the time I got Blue, there wasn't any "am I really ready?" Feeling. I knew I earned it with logged time on the mat and ability to demonstrate a curriculum of fundamentals.

very cool. Yeah, you never hear people sayuing after earning their blue "man, I don't feel like I earned that..."
I ended up being tested for 90 minutes and then rolling 45 straight for my blue, :D
I do like that you learned a ton of fundamentals and had them down to earn blue personally.

I never came up that way so I don't put my guys through it. However, since I've been under Caio (since 2013), he's used a white belt with blue line down the middle. I still haven't transitioned to that. But might. We'll see. Asides from keeping someone motivated at white belt, I don't see the point.

I got one. My first teacher was ATT affiliated.
I didn't care for it.
It's the same as a 2-stripe white belt. Meaning: good enough to handle random newbie spazzes that walk through the door, not solid enough to perform consistently at blue belt.
Best system I know is Wim Deputter's: White belts work through 4 stripes, then get promoted to blue. Then NO MORE stripes after that.
It's the best way so stay motivated until the student becomes an 'adult'.

I think the stripes end up being a horrible thing for instructors past white belt also.
As people know where they truly stand at the end of the day and just giving someone a stripe every 6 months or whatever isn't really how most people's actual progression pans out. Some people will progress faster than others. Some average and some slower than others. Stripes kind of promote promoting people based upon attendance more than anything else.

No. Stripes on white are enough. We do use stripes on colored belts as well. Not as systematically though.

We award up to 3 stripes per belt usually and don't use Green or in between coloured belts. I don't see the need to since there are already stripes plus it's one more thing to buy.

When competing they're going to be white belts anyway, so I don't personally have a problem with in-house ranks. Having said that, I think it's important for anyone using in-house ranks to clarify for their students how they translate to the world at large. If someone is a visiting four stripe white belt from a place that doesn't use green belts, people might be a bit shocked that the white belt is so experienced. If someone visits us with a green belt, I'm not going to bother to try to spend class time explaining why they have a special and different belt - I'm just going to hand them a loaner white belt.

My time at white belt was also under an ATT affiliate, and we did green belts as well. It might be the thing that helped me stay in BJJ, although by the time I had my 3rd stripe on my green belt I was itching to get the blue. Nowadays, I don't think I got stripes on either my blue or purple.

I don't care for it. To be honest, if you are an adult who needs another whole belt before their blue belt to keep you motivated perhaps you should go do something else.

Personally, I think this says it all. The green belt doesn't really serve a purpose outside of marketing. In every tournament, you're going to be a white belt, so there's no real point to wearing green. And if the training somewhere is of good quality and enjoyable, people won't really need an extra belt to stay.

Its more of a internal ranking when it come to the green belt in most gyms. You know how you have one of those white belts that are pretty good but still really doesn't do things correctly but you cant just hold them at white belt forever until it finally clicks, YET they are able to get the basics down pay. There is a large gap between White and blue and this kind of fills in that gap for some schools. We have students that May never get a green belt because their learning curve is great and then we have the ones that just cant seem to get past Level 4 of Mario. (showing my age) They are really ready to battle blue belts just yet so there is a Waiting period on them. They still compete in the white belt division but they are looked as and "an advanced white belt" per say
My gym has a good turn over ratio but the downside to that is that we are on a college campus so we get students that come in and be with us for a year or two but never really stay with it. My professor as well as Robson, does this to know who to keep and eye on to move up to blue belt without having to question if they know certain stuff. They were vetted enough to get the green belt so they need to solidify that they know enough to earn the blue now.

I'm not a fan. I don't like stripes either. I can understand it for children, but for adults, you shouldn't need to be showered with sweets to stay motivated to train. To be frank, I'm not especially interested in having students who are always thinking about the next belt/stripe etc, but to each their own.
So yeah, I am 100% against adding more belts to BJJ. 5 is more than enough (the ones past black belt are unnecessary too, IMO, but I'm less bothered by that as it's more of a "well done, you're still alive" kind of belt, rather than a "here you go little kid, a bit of candy so you don't leave." ;) )

My school only has stripes for kids. From what I understand there was a year or two when we had stripes for white belt but those went away. I think stripes are just another tool or measuring stick but there is definitely an issue when newer students see the next stripe or intermediary belt (before blue) as a goal. Personally when I was a white belt and early blue belt (at a school that used stripes) I definitely got too wound up over stripes and got upset when others were striped up but I wasn't.

We have the green belt in our gym. Apparently, Cyborg did it to label and mark the hobbyists. However, I only know of and seen one adult wear it. It is whatever to me. I did not come up through the ranks like that nor would I have my students do it if I owned a school, but I do not. So, not pig, not my farm. I am also not a huge fan of stripes. I feel they are pointless in the color rank division for adults.

A green belt for hobbyists? What an incredibly douchey thing to do. But, since the nonsense that's been coming out of that gym, it's not surprising.

Right. Well, the green belt thing is nothing new. When I was at 10th Planet in 2009 - 2011, the Riverside Moon had several dudes who were in the MMA scene, grappled, but wanted NOTHING to do with the grappling aspect and only wanted to cherry pick what they needed, which fair enough, that is their right. I remember teasing these dudes because they wanted to be known as the GANGrene [green] belt club within the school. They saw themselves as professional fighters and grappling full-time on the mats, nonstriking aspect of BJJ, as a hobby.

I don't see the need for them, I feel it just adds confusion. The main Ribeiro schools use them, but not all of them do. I think stripes on a white belt are sufficient to denote progression within rank. Typically people are only white belts for 1-2 years anyway.

That's not how I do stripes, nor is it how any of my instructors did it, but it may be different with different organizations. Degrees on a black belt are time based, but stripes on lower belts are typically merit based. I award stripes based on improvements in certain areas and/or techniques, superb performance in competition, or a specific goal they have achieved or issue they have overcome in their progress towards the next belt. I think this is fairly typical with most gyms, though I think Gracie gyms base their stripes on time if I remember correctly.

I'm not a fan of stripes personally, but they do give students a sense of progression.
I use the green belt for adults in my system and find it very useful. Each belt has its own set of requirements.
At the end of the day, as BJJ grows, the more transparent we can become as instructors the better imo.

How about rejigging /simplify the belt system
White belt + 0 stripes = noob
White belt + 1 stripe = equivalent to Blue belt (Beginner)
White belt + 2 stripes = equivalent to Purple belt (Intermediate)
White belt + 3 stripes = equivalent to Brown belt (Advanced)
Black belt (plain) = Black Belt student/competitor
Black Belt + red bar = Academy owner
Black Belt + red bar with Professor stripes = Teacher
This means you only have 2 belts = White or Black unless you own an academy and/or teach
White belt stripes would carry a lot more weight and operationally it will be more cost effective and less wastage
