Hey Beltchecker!
Struggling to get the perfect playlist for my studio when we are rolling, most playlists have 50% awesome songs and then just some real dead energy songs. Wondering if you have any playlists that never let you down. Hopefully I can compile a couple so we are never stuck with another ballad during a roll.
Thanks,
-John

I play 90s hip hop ... haven't been cancelled yet lol. Sometimes I mix it up with reggae, not sure if my students appreciate that as much though.

We tend to change it up depending on what the objective is.
Just fun friendly open mat, 80s pop is fantastic. Never knew that until Faroe Islands Camp, but huge fan now.
My home gym’s standard after class open mat is metal/rock - Metallica, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Five Finger Death Punch, etc.
Comp class is usually 90s/00s hip hop to really amp things through the roof.

Right on, so I think Im on the same page as y'all then. I love hip hop and rap in the gym, but sometimes the songs will get suddenly sexual, or switch to some R&B love song that really kills the mood! Im wondering if anyone on has compiled all the best stuff in a playlist on spotify...

To be honest, whatever is on. I do not hear it while rolling, I cannot be the only one who tones music out. I hear it until the slap bump...

Oh man sometimes music fuels me, I like to try and time my sweeps and throws with the drop.

John, can you not make your own playlist? I set them up on my iPhone before class. Usually consist of old punk tunes, I've been amazed at how many of the guys are into Husker Du, Face to Face and Operation Ivy.

Op Ivy, Dead Kennedys, Cro Mags, and Fugazi.
My youth all right there.
I tend to go in and out of different themes, sometimes even specific bands for a class.
Sometimes I'll do Clutch / Kyuss if I want a more sludy / stoner rock feel. For some reason Rush is awesome when I teach judo. But hard "getting after it" I'll always do Sepultura, Slayer, metallica, Pantera, Anthrax.
Some folks want lighter fare sometimes, so Rage against the Machine, and other 90's nu metal works quite well.

I spend hours and hours curating playlists, mostly because it's fun. Currently I'm in the process of going through the entire music library on my phone and splitting it mainly into four broad categories: electro, disco (I'm also shoving funk and dance in there), hip hop and chill (in which I shove anything from the other categories that is a bit slow).
I don't add anything aggressive, nothing with problematic lyrics (e.g., n word in hip hop). My goal with the music is to calm people down and create a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, which is one of my big goals in general for my BJJ club.
I've got an old sample playlist here, which combines a bunch of different stuff. Not one I actually use, though most of the songs off that are in my phone Musicolet (great little app) playlists: https://open.spotify.com/[...]USlFzM19X1

Wow, I'm impressed at you selecting PG rated hip hop. I've been playing this:

As I said, still haven't been cancelled lol. I'll skip over Fuck the Police if there are cops training though :)

Haha while I absolutely COULD set up my own playlist, I was hoping someone had already created a few on spotify that I could just follow and jam out to.

Ha - I go with the lowest common denominator of what could possibly offend people. If I'm going to put off students, I don't want it to be something really avoidable like song lyrics. :D
I can listen to the potentially offensive stuff at home, with headphones on. :P

I love reggae for rolls, but often the students get annoyed with it. We used to have an instructor who played it all the time. I personally love the vibe.
I second the 90s hip-hop and Metallica, and I'll add Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers to the mix.

I have 3 playlists I use. They’re public on Spotify, titled:
“Roll Radio”
Mostly heavy rock from the past 25 years. Many tracks on the prog/djent side of things. No screaming or growling vocals. No profanity. I want a playlist with good energy. A handful of instrumentals.
“Roll Radio - Nineties (mostly)”
More mainstream but some obscure gems thrown in. Heavy rock with a dash of grunge and alt-rock. Again, no profanity or death metal vocals, and no ballads.
“Roll Radio - trance / electronica”
Minimal vocals, mostly instrumentals.
I imagine these can be found with a playlist search on Spotify. Give ‘em a spin if you’re so inclined and happy rolling!

I've played Toto's Rosanna a few times in training as a warm up. People jog around the room and with every "Rosanna" they have to sprawl. Then there's the harder warm up with bear crawls during the solos.
Toto is great.

I like to play 90's hiphop songs like Soulchef and Pete Rock. It really makes the sparring groovy.
