Hey… if they did not earn it don’t recognize it…. I certainly won’t. But If they did and are solid…. It’s a good thing for Jiu Jitsu … then again as you all know there are differing standards: there’s the I put in time standard. Theres the put in time and run a school standard. There’s the I am a super competitor and champion standard. There’s the I am a super competitor, put in the time, have a school and train champions and are a champion standard. Then there’s the professional …. Writes books and articles, creates video instructions for the community, gets paid to compete, put in the time, run a school!!!

I'm not sure who exactly you are responding to here, was it me? I was just pointing out it was fun that a lot of black belts randomly got promoted around the same few days :)

Same happened in Finland recently. Many seminars going on at once and people all around getting promoted.

I pay attention to anyone who says a lot of Blackbelts getting promoted. I am sure it was a relative term. It should also be a rare thing to occur. A BJJ Professorship is a very significant thing to me and perhaps I am overly sensitive about it. You are a very nice person of course and happy to see others get such a high recognition. Forgive me for being alittle obtuse.
Then again this is Belt Checker. We as a group rate the validity of promotion and skill. I think we do a great job of it because we are all critical of promotional standards … especially the Professorship! The standard given to me is very high as I approach my time to be evaluated for promotion:
I must run a successful school. I must make champions that win at the IBJJF level of competition. I must also win at several events to include an IBJJF Pan Am or Master World Championship… again!!! I have written a book for Blie and a book for Purplebelt championship performance and i am writing a book for coaches as a Brownbelt.
Except for the books the other tasks are the minimum standards given for me to be considered for my Blackbelt in BJJ. Perhaps it’s because I am expected due to past performance to accomplish these things. I do not expect others to do this much but.. pretty damn near as close. Then again it is also about how much ya do and have fast your are recognized for the honor of being a Professor of BJJ. Perhaps for many others 15-20 years of study makes sense if they do not do a lot to give back to the community at the minimum run a school or teach….
In any case it is my sincere hope that these new professors are the best of us and will expand the knowledge and prestige of the honor to be Professornof Brazilian Jiu Jitsu….. thanks for the post

A lot of people were slowed down because of COVID. I think we’re just getting groups of people who got back to normalcy and finally graduated.

My point was that so many people got promoted to black belt the same week, not that people are getting promoted more in general.

Congrats to all the new black belts!
The point Gurjot makes, while it has nothing to do with the original topic, is an interesting philosophical debate. What makes a black belt? Is it simply time enough on the mat that you can apply what you've learned over the years against a resisting opponent regardless of size or strength and "win" the fight? Is it knowing and the ability to teach a certain number of techniques from all positions? It is medaling sufficiently at each belt level across the board? Is it all three in equal measure?
I used to think it was at least two at a very high level. Then I started talking to guys with games and/or schools I admire when I was close to black belt level myself. I wanted the OK from the various teachers who were a part of my journey that I was invited into The Club. To a man, they said, basically, that each belt is a calendar with varying degrees of milestones one must meet. Simple stuff that nearly everyone that puts time on the mat will achieve. In 10-12 years coming to class 3 days a week you are going to pick up all the things that makes one a black belt naturally. They also reminded me that a black belt isn't a magical being that vanquishes all foes with just a look and that the understanding of BJJ starts at black belt. It's a journey milestone and not an endpoint and people grow into their belts - even at black belt.

Thanks for the insight Professor Sean. I have found the martial part is pretty much there at Purple. You are an expert compared to almost anyone who has never or barely entered the discipline. This is especially true if you are teaching, running a school or competing at high levels and often.
I personally have found the Brown and a lack belts represent more than martial skill. You are a representative of high order for your academy. You are a civil and martial standard. You begin to embody the ethics and morals of your academy: You are a mentor, coach and leader!!!
Black means you belong to an organization lead by professors. You are one of them beginning the advanced stages of coaching coaches, mentoring mentors and and leading leaders. The best of also compete and do these things. Most importantly we are inspirations to overcome hubris when victorious and depression when defeated. We teach resilience and embody the Gentle Way!!!
