So to continue keeping this place alive with controversial topics.
Students of Todd Nathanson have joined beltchecker. There's controversy around Mr. Nathanson. I don't have any specific information nor personal stake in the matter beyond having Googled it and found out there's controversy.

Chime in folks :)

I have mixed emotions on this one. According to his academy's website, Todd "has received a 3rd degree black belt from Jean Jacques Machado (The highest, and only, black belt degree awarded by Jean Jacques Machado)."

https://www.academyofbraz[...]about-todd

If he truly was promoted to a 3rd degree black belt by Machado, he certainly has the credentials to promote his students.

For me personally it's something that might prevent me from verifying based on promotion history only. I'd additionally definitely need personal connection or at least a well documented competition and/or coaching record.

There are a lot of “Japanese Jujutsu” people that have “coral belt” ranks in those “arts”,

Who cross train in BJJ,

And then wear a coral belt in a BJJ gi in their schools when they teach.

It causes confusion in the marketplace.

But, I am not going to lose any sleep over it.

Yeah, a two-faced issue. Todd Nathanson has undeniably earned his black belt, so he should be in a position to promote students despite any controversy, and probably holds reasonable standards when he does.

But does Mr. Nathanson's self-promotion to coral belt, which has been disputed by his ex-instructor JJ Machado, invalidate his legitimacy altogether since the promotion hasn't followed the time restrictions set by the IBJJF...?

There was discussion related to this issue about JJ Machado himself actually not qualifying for coral belt yet (by the IBJJF standards) when he was awarded it.

I think there's no reason to doubt that a promotion to a colored/black belt by Nathason is not legit. Yet I wouldn't vote to validate the man's coral belt rank...

Bottom line, it's all just quite amusing business about some white tape strips or red striping on a piece of black fabric.

I think we should dispense with the belts altogether and adopt golden sashes. :-P
To be fair, one of the weird circus hélio-only BJJ belts does have gold on it. We’re almost there.

I have a question.
Who is allowed to promote to blue-black belt? I have always been promoted by a black belt.
How do you all feel about colour belts promoting students to colour belts.
No answer is a wrong answer, just looking for others views on the subject.
Cheers

My own feeling is all promotions must occur with the permission of a black belt.

If a black belt gives a purple or brown belt permission to promote his students to blue belt,

perhaps in a satellite academy,

that is between the black belt and his students.

However, I would also suggest that a two rank difference is better than a one rank difference in such cases.

But again, that is between the black belt and his students.

How about a ronin type colour belt that has no black belt instructor and just wants to run a program?

I have three conflicting views on that.

First, as a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and Judo black belt, I feel obligated to make the statement that those are not Gracie Jiu-Jitsu belts, nor Judo belts. They are in house dojo belts.

Second, I feel all ranks belts, especially for adults are silly, so if the entire premise is somewhat absurd, the scenario you describe is just additional absurdity, no more nor less. So, I shouldn't care.

Third, if the belted people in question can technically and competitively perform, and are not sex predators, then I feel that black belts with proper ranks, should wave their hands or squiggle their pens, preferably at no charge, to correct the situation as a service obligation.

If they cannot technically or competitively perform this will be obvious in tournaments and open mats, or visit rolls.

And theoretically, their rank should not be verified on Beltchecker.com.

However, it does make one question the person’s overall state of mind & judgement, which can affect how people look at those promotions.
They've gotta be nuts to do this or so narcissistic that they are out of control.

This whole self-promote to coral belt is tricksy business...especially because stripes on the black belt -- and therefore the coral belt itself -- are awarded based on time passing....literally nothing. The IBJJF is Not a governing body, so their standards are nice to follow, but certainly aren't *the* standards. These awards are given based purely on time, and the time picked is completely arbitrary -- we need only look at Prof. Machado's early reception of his coral belt, or even Prof. Rickson's early red belt, to see that this is a political matter, and not one of any substance related to skill and whatnot.

Still....I don't like the 'smell' of self-promotion, if that makes sense.

I'd like to see it changed to another criteria, like maybe you get a stripe every time you raise someone from White belt all the way through Black Belt. Make it mean something, real contribution to community. Just an idea, haha.

This is how it should be, in my opinion. It's also exacatly how we are doing it ourselves.

I'm not sure as the entire criteria needs to be changed, but that sounds like a reasonable basis for an additional/alternative path to degree stripes.

Wouldn't work for just getting someone all the way throug black.... you'd be at 10 stripes after 10 students become black? LOL.

But perhaps 1 stripe for bringing someone up to black, and another striped when that student brings someone up through black, etc. This could be instead or in additionto the time-based requirements. And no, IBJJF is defintely NOT a governing body nor the "set" standard. Nor should they ever be.

When I was teaching as brown belt, my coach was a black belt. He was cool with me giving stripes, but I preferred to wait for him to come by and roll with them before any stripes were given, and I never gave a belt. I believe that black belts should do promotions. That's my opinion. If there are different arrangements at other schools, that's all good. I have way to much work to do trying to improve myself and my students, no time to worry about what happens at other schools.
