In the Pedro Sauer Association its supposed to mean you are a head instructor of a school. So I have had em. I have seen many others who do not.

I don't know of any formal standard, but what I'm used to is:
- Black belt white bar - non-instructor black belt (or at least, in context, a black belt who isn't there to teach)
- Black belt red bar - instructor black belt
- Black belt red bar with instructor bars - head instructor for a school
- Black belt navy blue bar - black belt with Royce

So I tend to just wear a normal black belt with a red bar, but also have a black belt with a white bar in case anyone asks me to wear that instead when I'm traveling.

According to the IBJJF "Black Belts should have a red bar of approximately 10 cm (3.94 in) in length positioned between 2 cm (0.79 in) to 3 cm (1.18 in) on one end. It will be delineated by two white bars and will receive markings from one to six degrees." This suggests that the red bar and white stripes are simply features of all normal black belts.

I get that the IBJJF is not the definitive authority on jiu jitsu but I thought I'd add it to the conversation.

There are so many different traditions regarding the ranking bar on the black belt. A friend of mine was just promoted to bb with the professor tabs on it.

Here's the tradition we follow at our gym:

Red bar: regular shmo black belt (i.e. "hobbyists" would wear this one)
White bar: competitor
Red bar with professor tabs: Person wearing this belt must...
- have been a black belt for at least a year
- have beaten another black belt in competition
- teach classes regularly

So many different zany things we can do to try and make ourselves look way more awesome than everyone else lol.

I tried to make sense of all this when I got my black belt. The blue bar obviously identifies a Royce Gracie-affiliated black belt (but it was explained to me, that they agree to carry on the tradition of incorporating self-defense into their teaching as well.) I've seen a white bar used as a sort of probationary period as well, with the red bar earned after a year. I've also seen it as you guys have already described, where the white bars on either side of the red identify an academy owner. My coach, who owns the academy I train at, does not have those white bars on his belt, and is also a 1st degree.

I'm curious, how often have you experienced that people require you to wear a black belt with white bars in order to visit their academy??

For us, it indicates that the black belt, or brown belt has been to an instructor course given by our senior black belts in the affiliation. I had instructor bars as a brown belt, when i passed the instructors course. the day i was promoted to black belt, the instructor bars came with it.

Not once so far, but it takes up almost no space to throw the second belt in my bag just in case. I view it in the same way as I pack a white gi when traveling just because some places care (but the vast majority don't).

Yup. I always take my standard white travel gi when I'm on the road for the same reasons. I still have yet to experience a gym that makes the white bar mandatory for visiting black belts... but I've also not been a black belt for that long...

I don't think you'll run into this. usually no one cares what's on your belt if you are visiting.

My school doesn't have any particular requirements for the color rank bar for the black belts. I did have a standard for myself that once I get a black belt I will wear one with the white rank bar and switch over to a red bar after I get my first degree. I also know dudes that had a few degrees, but they just wore a solid black belt.

I visually like the white edges in the ends of red bar :)

Luckily I also AM the owner / head instructor of the gym I train in.

When I was promoted to black belt my Professor and his Professor said they didn’t care if I put the white bars on the belt. I like the look of the white bars on the black belt and I also help coach.

I was given a black belt with a red bar. I do t buy new belts. Shoot, I don’t like to buy new gis. So my professor with his 2 stripes on his red bar and the little white stripes at the end gave me this one. If he wants me to have those bars he can add them. Otherwise it is just 2 inches of cloth that doesn’t protect me from anything. It is such a confusing weird world of weird belt rules.

Thanks for the education. If I don't have stripes on my belt and a school I am visiting for the first time does line-ups, it's generally assumed I got my bb recently.

this image below is taken from the IBJJF site, so is the latest version

I was told from day 1 after getting my black belt that i should have these since i already had 2 years teaching and i already completed the Instructor Certification Program.

as all of you, I have head many versions of why you should or should not wear the white stripes on the read bar, but this was the justification I received to wear the stripes.

for the record, I have my own school also and I'm a GB Black Belt.

My red bar fell off and I kind of liked that. Never planning to put it or any stripes back on. A black belt is a black belt imo, I like that belts just follow competition divisions. But that's just me.

so, maybe the lack of white stripe can be a sign of a non-ibjjf protester :-D

joke aside, thank you all for the anwsers

Do you plan to skip further belt colors when eligible, red/black, red /white etc ?

The way I was told was that the white tabs on red sash indicate Head Instructor, red sash no white tabs indicates instructor. White sash is competitor (or "please don't teach" tab) and no sash is a Judo belt. I am pretty particular about that. I only wear my white tabbed belt when I am at my gym but whenever I go anywhere else I don't wear that belt.

By that one shouldn't wear red tab either when visiting any other gym because you are not an instructor there...

Yes, I do since my coach who awarded me my black belt and since I was head coach and owner of my gym I wear the white stripes at the ends of the red rank bar.

I've actually heard of a gym where the mat rules are that all visitors should wear a white belt! Usually, that's regarded as sandbagging and not really good etiquette (unless it's a prank which the instructor is in on of course). So it wouldn't surprise me if there are gyms out there with rules against visitors with the borders on the belt.

Unless I knew in advance though, I wouldn't bring a belt without the framing borders or a white belt.

This notion of not being able to wear your awarded belt color in someone else's gym is one of my biggest issues happening in our community. If you want to test me first then do it, but don't assume just because I'm not from your gym or your affiliation that I didn't earn my belt color. I tell my students all the time that if you visit a gym and they ask you to change your belt then turn around and walk out.

...or don't ;-)

If they want their students to see "white belts" from visiting academies having more skill than all their own white belts (maybe even blue belts or higher), it just reflects bad on their gym.

Personally, I think it is good for my students to gain confidence in themselves and seeing we have high standards at our academy. For that purpose, perhaps you should have all visitors wear a black belt instead! It would actually make more sense ;-P
