I just saw Marcelos post on Instagram that he will be going through three months of chemo followed by surgery for stomach cancer. It really drives home the thought that we always need to be vigilant and mindful of our health.

Ah man... that's terrible news. I was just telling someone today that I was in the stands at the 2007 ADCC Championships when Robert Drysdale beat him for the biggest upset I have ever seen at a sporting event in my life.

Some doctor said that with cancer it's good to have a mindset of not "if" but "when" - it'll remind you to check and prepare in all ways hoping for the best...

Fingers crossed Marcelo beats it!

One of the positives of a high profile figure being affected is that it can lead to a rise in the number of people being more proactive with their health. I learned all of the warning signs of colon cancer watching Kangol Kid’s (RIP) battle last year and plan to push for screening when I turn 40 instead of 45.

Same here. My stepfather discovered that too late so I went and had a check at 37. They found and removed some little things (not sure of the word in English) that would probably have developed into cancer in 7-8 years. If I hadn’t checked, I would likely have had cancer in just three years from now. Could EASILY have postponed that 10 years due to laziness.

New ones had developed at my second check three years later, so I’m not stopping that anytime soon. Go check your butts y’all.

It's funny how things work out. I had to get a couple ultrasounds for kidney stones back in the summer/fall. The kidney stones are gone, but they saw something else in my bladder. Now I have to get one of those dick cameras to see if I have bladder cancer. Ughh.

Absolutely, and screening also for prostate cancer from about 50 years of age. Early detection and surgery saves lives (as mine). Please dear male BJJ colleagues, push for screening!

Super sad stuff. I'll be honest, I'm absolutely terrified of cancer. It has taken some people very close to me, including several young friends in their twenties. Scary. I hope the best for Marcelo and his battle and recovery.

I hope this isn't a violation of forum rules to post this, but I just saw that BJJ Fanatics is offering an instructional video set where 100% of the proceeds go towards Marcelo's cancer treatment. My wife (a BJJ blue belt) is a cancer survivor, and Marcelo is a long-time friend of my professor, so I thought I would post the link here. Moderators, please let me know if this violates any of the forum rules and I'll remove the post.

I have another one right after Maine camp. It's so fun having a camera shoved up there. Anyways, if the mass has grown, gotta take it all out...
