As an older practitioner, do you berimbolo? I was able to fairly easily when I was younger, not so much these days. Any one 40+ still doing them?

Yes, sir. I'm 42 and I'm working through Espen Mathiesen's crab ride system as we speak. Lots of bolo action there. I'm planning on still being able to invert well into my 50's if nature will allow it :).

Well, I will be 50 next year and I learned to deal with all the bolo-stuff but it never became part of my game. My JJ was very old fashioned style from the beginning and turns more and more into a „sloth“-style.

I was listening to a podcast the other day talking about "Old Bastard Jiu-Jitsu." I just about spit my tea out when the host said, "berim-bullshit guard."

43 yo here… Negative ghost rider! But nor did I ever have much exposure to it. Even when I trained more with competitors this style was not part of their game so haven’t seen a lot of it.

I'm feared by 8 and 80yr olds. I bolo them like there's no tomorrow, cos usually the next day I'm holed up in bed resting from all those inversion and only the 8 and 80yr olds can't run away fast enough for me to tell them about how I reinjured my neck trying to bolo someone and it didn't work cos I got squashed mid way through

48, I only try to counter bolos now ... which can end up in bolos, but the goal is to counter them.

I'm 47. Direct quote from after a tournament, "How are you over 40 and playing Inverted spider guard and doing birembolo back takes!?!?!?!" :-D

Though at least in my gym, I'm in the minority, even among guys who are much younger than I am.

I'm 42, no berimbolo stuff for me. I made the decision when I started BJJ at 25 that I wasn't going to bother with anything (in terms of using it in sparring, naturally I still try and learn how popular stuff works, so I can teach it) I was unlikely to be able to still do when I got to 65+. Very happy with that decision so far. :D

Berimbolo, inverting and many things that were easy when I was younger now are in the category of only if I absolutely positively have too.

As I age I notice my game stripping away things that take attributes. In a pinch I still do them then afterwards thin I can't believe I can still do that. Then again at 60 the body co-operates less and less every day

Given you've got the experience, it would be interesting to know the various techniques/positions etc that you used to do back in the day, which you've since dropped as you got into your 60s.

Also, what's stood the test of time in your game?

I have always used a simple basics oriented game and was a big leglocker.

My game when I was younger was a speed based game and now it is very pressure oriented as I am a lot bigger. The biggest changes have been in my guard game I used to fish for subs now I focus on sweeps

Yes
We need to understand old and new school

I used to run away from inversions(40+, ultra-heavyweight, fairly flexible), but changed my mindset after listening to the Just jiujitsu podcast with Kroyler saying that he does them. Mix that with Professor Danaher doing them with his bad knees and his, and I decided that I needed to make sure I could invert.

TL:DR, yes, I do it.

I would, but I'm too dumb to figure it out. I go for it and end up with my back taken.

I'm almost 47 and I have suffered two serious neck injuries, so I don't invert. That said, I did attend a seminar about five years ago where the instructor taught several hours worth of berimbolo-related material. I was glad to learn it, but it was purely academic for me.

I will do it in class while sparring and filling around with teammates, but it has never been a major part of my game, and isn't dialed in enough to be part of my competition game. I'm bigger, though, and never really had the kind of finesse that I feel is required for birimbolo play. For reference I'm 44 and currently out of shape at 230lbs. Knee injury, but no back issues.

45 years old and history of 4 herniated discs. If I start doing berimbolo I need a wheel chair afterwards.
I feel ya! I got 6. 3 in my lower back and 3 in my neck.
