My girlfriend and I like to travel, but she does not train jiu-jitsu at all. In the past when we have gone on vacations I would take the time off from the gym and training all together. I would like to take the opportunity while I am on vacation to explore other gyms around the world in the future. I was wondering how other people found balance in similar situations.

I suck at this. Every time i travel my first step is to look up local schools and see if it is okay to come in and train.. Fortunately my wife prefers training Phil to not training Phil

Two hours away from your family on a holiday to do something for yourself that makes you happy? No partner should ever accept that.

Find her something you hate and she loves doing what happens at the same time as your dojo storm/holiday training. Sorted. Pete, the life coach/relationship expert.

Pay for her to get a massage, pedi, mani or give her some $ to go shopping at a local mall while you train.

Simple for me - early morning private lessons. My wife isn't an early morning girl so it works out for us. I get an hour with a local black belt and I'm back before the end of breakfast. Also, I ask permission. She doesn't get mad when it's a decision we made together.

I've been sharing all the responses with my girlfriend and yours is by far the favorite. I will have to arrange this for our next vacation!

It's a sort of mat fee but for girlfriends!

My first suggestion would be to ask her how you could do it and still have her be happy. She should have the best ideas. And if she comes back with a "WTF, no way" then you learn something important about her and your relationship.

In a healthy relationship partners usually don't share every interest they have, and should support each others passions. And have open lines of communication.

Maybe I'm just a strange old married guy, but I've not ever really had this issue. In all honesty, my wife is the one who says I should visit a gym because,in her words, "it's my vacation too."

Training and teaching all year round and sacrificing family time for Jiu Jitsu means two weeks of off time is the least I can do for my wife and sons. I am not that selfish.

In the past I would train a few times and even teach but after 28 years of training, it does not hurt for me to focus on those people who are most important to me for such a small fraction of the year. 50 weeks training - 2 weeks off

When I am on my deathbed I won't be asking for more mat time.
I'll be begging for more time with my family. They are my priority, not wrestling with sweaty dudes.

Married 23 years legally and 22 by the church and going strong as ever.

I also take my sons with us on every vacation even now that they are 20 and 18 years old and we get to roll on the beach or hotel room for fun. We also do pushup challenges with each other.

Great thread! Here's how I like to do it; if we're on a trip for a week or more, I like to look up a gym nearby and if it's convenient, see if I can drop in for a class or two while I'm in town. I don't force it and don't make it a super high priority, but I love to train and I really enjoy getting to cross-train with new people. Early mornings seem to be the best; my wife and kids aren't morning people(especially on vacation) so if I can grab a 6 or 7am mat time I can be back with breakfast and coffee in tow right as everybody else is getting going for the day, having gotten in a good workout, and everybody's happy. All that said, if it's inconvenient or disruptive to what we're doing or the goals of our trip then I never force it.

Ok I've only have done a vacation and not done jiu-jitsu once, and I needed the break. My family is very understanding of my addiction to jiu-jitsu, but I'm understanding of their needs as well. It's a compromise and both need to compromise so you both enjoy your vacation. For you to enjoy a 2 hour excursion to jiu-jitsu, you have to give up something as well. You need to communicate so you both get what you want out of the vacation.
