I've always awarded stripes (and put on my own) from the bottom (from the sleeve end closest to the end of the belt). Which is also how it's shown on e.g. the IBJJF graduation system poster.

Not that it really matters (which some of you will point out anyways), but have you seen any pattern in who fills up with stripes from the top instead of from the bottom? Just random because of not really caring or is it according to preference in some particular lineages?

I think it looks kind of whack when you have stripes on your belt starting from near the knot, although I have definitely seen that done before. Doesn't seem like it's a specific tradition within lineages though, but it's a good question!

I never put much thought into it, as I have seen both versions. From the bottom upwards is definitely more common, but I seen from the top downwards several times as well. But maybe most of the latter cases had something to do with custom order belts and the manufacturer somehow thinking that was the right way to do it?

My coach awards stripes from top to bottom, the stripes he's been awarded are also top to bottom... I've seen other people with bottom to top stripes and it felt weird to me, so I guess it's just that I'm not used to it...

Interesting! I only see pictures of his own BB promoting instructor Robin Gracie with stripes from bottom to top, so doesn't seem to be from there. Are you comfortable asking João on his take on why he and some other instructors put on stripes in that direction? Not judging, just curious!

He doesn't seem to be too consistent about it though (e.g. http://www.carlsongraciei[...]dy.com/bio).

Btw, I just noticed his father had at least seven (excluding the two which could be professor stripes) degree stripes on his BB. Does anyone know when the coral belts came into being? Perhaps never in some lineages and/or organizations.

I don't think Carlson Jr. really cares about it. Where you place the stripes or on which side the grading bar of the belt must be worn doesn't seem to matter much.

I have always applied them from the bottom up (from near the end of the belt up towards the knot). Since each stripe represents a higher degree (or further progress within a colored belt), I think it makes sense to have the highest-ranked stripe on top. It's like a digital battery meter filling up bar-by-bar as the battery charges. It seems like most BJJ schools do it this way, but as with everything in BJJ, there is no universal standard. There's probably somebody out there who starts in the middle of the sleeve and works his way out. ;)

Funny you made this post, I was just thinking about this three days back!

I normally see them bottom (closest to end of belt) going up, occasionally I see them starting from the top and it annoys me. I always applied them bottom to top because it’s what I see normally, I don’t have a rhyme or reason.

Exactly. Junior is a very chill, down to earth dude, who really doesn't care much for formality. It's just a piece of tape that shows you've been in the game for a while. It's not some sorcery that has to be placed on a precise magical spot.

BTW Carlson Sr. was a red belt, and did wear that belt on occasion. But sometimes he just wore a plain black belt, and other times a belt with a bunch of stripes. Again, he didn't seem to care about that thing.

I also read in a thread about some academy (don't remember which) where those who got their belts somewhere else got to wear a white belt with a single stripe of their belt color until they were approved for the belt in the lineage of the academy.

If I remember right the video i watched was a Machado affiliate, not sure of the thread was related to those gyms or not.

At Kron Gracie's academy, visiting black belts who didn't get their rank through Rickson or Kron, have to wear a black belt with a white stripe though it.

Instructor Explains Reasoning on Why Visiting Black Belts Can’t Wear Black Belts From Other Lineage

Bjj black belts that visit Kron Gracie’s academy are not able to wear a black belt with the traditional red bar unless it was received from either Kron or Rickson Gracie. Instead they’re given a black belt with a white bar – kind of like the black belt female judokas wore until recently in Japan. …

My professors and therefore myself and most of our instructors have always gone from bottom up. We have had a couple instructors start at the top when they happened to be the first to give a kid a stripe. It always bugged me, probably more than it should have. It was the lack of uniformity that got to me. And it just doesn't look "right" 😅

I did stumble across something on this topic that I found interesting recently. The ibjjf poster in regards to kids programs using the monthly promotion set up. It shows white stripes from top down, followed by red stripes from bottom up, then 3 of the next belt color stripes from bottom up again.

Uneven spacing on the belt sleeve too, with a really wide gap with black on the bottom. Oh, the horror!

On the poster with adult belts, there is some extra spacing outside of the stripes. Also, it features quite random widths of stripes and spaces, so I would guess the person responsible for the IBJJF belt graphics is short of a healthy dose of OCD pedantry. It could also be a secret code passed on all the way from Maeda and if we don't comply with the right widths of stripes and spaces in the right places, we're losing out of getting our skills boosted by the spirit of Egidio Lasjovino.

(side shifted belt sleeve copies added to make the uneven spacings and stripes more visible)

That poster is hard to look at!!

But you might be onto something with the hidden code... 🤣

This is how the IBJJF-poster looked in 2013, so note that the required configuration of stripes and spaces has changed since then, to at least accomodate OCD partially. Because of Lasjovino though, they couldn't go all the way, or a lot of practitioners would lose their mojo by distributing stripes and spaces evenly.
