I was asked a question tonight and couldn’t answer. Does the stripe bar go on the left or right side of the body? I’ve seen both ways and never thought of it honestly. But i’m sure someone has a reason either way Thanks !!! Roll on !

I don‘t know, but I think there should be no rule.
Some of the highest ranked practitioners (even from the Gracie family) are not even able to tie their belt in a correct form (as originally adapted from traditionally Judo).
In Judo there is no relevant rule because there are no bars on the belt.💁🏻‍♂️

It depends who you ask.
Recently I ve seen a short video of Renzo Gracie, who said either side is fine.

Back then before 1967, there weren’t any bars on belts anyway…

Some say on the left side, because a samurai had his sword on the left side…
But as said before, there weren’t bars on BJJ belts in till 1967, the Foundation of the Jiu Jitsu federation of Guanabara as far as I know!

I think it doesn’t matter on which side the bar is!

There isn't any officially proper side, but for the sake of uniformity some schools have adopted one side or the other as proper. At the school I attend it is preferred that it go on the left, but if a guest comes in with it on the right it's nothing to get upset about.

Considering all the Gi-stuff is adapted from Judo and there were no bars even in BJJ before 1967, the samurai-sword-argumentation is a classical bullshido-story.

-But just for fun I would say that the bar looks more like the tsuka (grip) of Katana (or wakizashi) what means it has to be worn on the right hand side for a right-handed guy.
Because mune (side of the blade) lies along the left hip and if there is no right angle between grip and blade (which is indeed not the case), only the end of obi (the belt) which goes to the right hand side can be a (simulated) grip of a left hand side worn blade.😉

IBJJF does not give any guidance either.

"Belt requirements"
"Athletes should use a durable, 4 to 5 cm wide belt colored according to the athlete’s rank, with a black tip – except for black belts, where the tip should be white or red. The belt should be worn over the top, wrap around the waist twice, and be tied using a double knot tight enough to hold the GI top closed. Once tied in a double knot, each end of the belt should hang 20 to 30 cm in length."

On the graphic it's on the left side.

…on the graphic it is not recognizable that it is a correct double knot.🫣
That profile was disputed by Johan LOL!!!!!

The tails also aren't 20-30cm unless the model is 10 feet tall.

Yeah, Sebastian! That‘s what I have written exactly ;-)

I see some people posting on the left . If you put on the left the logo ( on the other tail of the belt ) is upside down !

Renzo says whatever side its on when he ties his belt is the correct side whether on the right or left. LOL
Wanted to post that, but couldn’t find the video/short anymore🤷‍♂️

This is why the IBJJF developed the new double-sided belt (patent pending)! Not only do you not have to worry about what side the rank sleeve is on when you tie it, but you can also now get promoted all the way to 18th-degree black belt (provided you are willing to pay the promotion fees, of course).

Depending on your school it seems it either doesn't matter or it goes on the left. I've never heard anyone claim it goes on the right. At GB it goes on the left.

O.k., let‘s put a new twist in the discussion:
probably it depends on if You are female or male!🤔
Because closing the kimono is for males from left hand side to right hand side und traditionally for females vice versa.🤪

…and finally EVERYTHING nower days seems to touch a point which allows to turnover in a transgender-debate!☝🏼
[To be woke and safe I would postulate precautionary that every individual has the right to wear no belt at all or graduation bars on all sides!!!]

Men wear the bar on right side, women on the left and trans people can decide each day how they feel atm.
