I am starting a gym and I am thinking about this as a possible affiliate. Anyone here have experience with this scenario? They seem great but it's always nice to hear people's thoughts and experiences.

I've been an affiliate for quite a few years now. It doesn't really mean all that much, in practical terms, as there is no money changing hands. It's more of a networking thing, in my experience, as I will regularly have Globetrotters passing through. One of the most important commitments you're signing up to, IMO, is making sure you offer absolutely everybody a free week. That's possibly my fave part of the affiliate rules. :D

What do you need and expect from an affiliation?
Great question.
I left my old school for a few reasons after coaching there since early blue belt. One think I am looking for is an affiliate to rank up through because right now I will be stuck at 2 stripe brown because I didn't want a black belt from my old gym.
The main thing I am looking for is an awesome network for the gym i am starting called Project Jiu Jitsu. I have traveled a lot and always loved jumping from school to school meeting new people and learning from different perspectives. Honestly my favorite thing about jiu jitsu is that it always felt like a had friends no matter where I was.
I have heard that globetrotters helps people in my particular situation a lot. But I just wanted to see what people's experiences were like.

Still great to hear that the network is strong. I love learning from everyone. Especially visitors.

I'm not sure that a globetrotters affiliation will help you for growing up with ranks. It's more like a cool network worldwide than like a Master who follow you....except maybe if you can send a huge among of $$$$$ somewhere in the Carabean Ocean 😉 then everything might happen

I don't have that craig jones cash lmao. Eben if they can't still looks like a cool networking option.

Globetrotters can be a great network to find someone like-minded to work with. But belt promotions directly through us only happens at camps, very rarely and probably have one of the most difficult criteria of any affiliation in the world: Every single black belt coach at camp must vote yes after a week of evaluation and none of them have anything to lose in saying no/letting you wait (contrary to if they had a business/affiliation/seminar-relationship with you, which is quite common).

I think we've only promoted something like 4 or 5 black belts in 100 camps, so if that's the goal, I think there are definitely much easier routes than trying to do it at Globetrotters camps.

But for networking, training, friends, traveling, it's hard to beat 🙂

Thanks for the response and the honesty on the ranking. The network alone sounds like it would be a lot of fun. Not so worried about the ranking but it will eventually be something I have to figure out.

We basically want to promote as few people as possible at camps 😄 Don't want people to start showing up for any other reason than actually wanting to be there, that would be a sad holiday for us all.

But yeah, definitely something that there is a solution for out there somewhere. There are something like 300-400k black belts in the world, one of them must be able to help.

Makes a lot of sense. I'll check it out some more because I would love to have people visiting a lot.

I'm currently unaffiliated to any governing / organization. While I have "affiliation" to Globetrotters, like others have mentioned, it's more of a networking, fun thing to be part of rather than a pathway to higher belts/ stripes.

Im happy with the globetrotters affiliation. I like the values, they are very close to ours. Ive been getting quite a few visitors because of the network from abroad. I also encourage my members to go train at other affiliated gyms when they are on holidays. Also was happy to meet Nicholas Cole, who is now teaching a bit in our gym. I dont think all of these things would have happened if we werent affiliated.
