Weirdest Advice You Gave a Student That Actually Worked

I was wondering who else has gotten creative in teaching and was surprised it worked.
My latest example, I had a student who basically treated everything like he was fighting in the finals at ADCC Worlds. He couldn't even drill with anyone without turning it into a sparring round, and Sparring was an absolute nightmare. He was constantly injuring himself. Also would go so wild he'd do truly dangerous things. One time he was so "seeing red he did a flying Kani Basami even though this is banned in our gym. Telling him to go light, or go 50% was useless, because he had no feeling for intensity or self preservation.
I was constantly trying to get him to chill, and nothing worked. Then, I had a wacky inspiration, so I put some Backstreet Boys on the radio during sparring and told him he had to sing along while rolling. And it actually WORKED! He's actually calmed down and is avoiding getting injured! 🥳
So, who else had a crazy idea that actually worked?

🙈 ffs😂…. So you are a far better, more creative and a more patient instructor than I am. I would have told him max 3 times to calm the f. down and dial down the intensity or rather that training isn’t competition. Pulling of the flying kani basami and hurting himself or others, although you told him it’s not allowed in training , would have been the point where the guy would have been expelled from my group…..
Chapeau!

or bust
So far Backstreet Boys is working. But if he starts getting panic again, that's on the list.

In his defense he didn't hurt anyone with the Kani Basami (thank god) and mostly he was injuring himself more that anyone else.

Ingrid Michaelson is also a good choice for a sing along roll. 😅

Great idea! I never remember the song or anything when I am rolling, so I am not sure it would work for me. But I will recommend it to one of our heavyweight blue belts. He is just 100% all the time. Because he is a solid brick, a few people have been injured, myself included. We were doing a light roll as I was nursing some ribs that went click-clack on a roll that same day. Next thing I know, this 240lbs powerlifter is slamming me to the mat, landing full force on my side! I have to remember, though, not to put my playlist on for him; otherwise, I think I would be slammed through the mats and my ribs would still be recovering years later. NO HEAVY DEATH METAL FOR THE BLUE BELT! LOL

Given the name Megatron, shouldn't you be listening to "The Touch" by Stan Bush? 🤔🤣

LMAO... MEGATON, not MegaTRON.. But the song is a classic
"You got the touch
You got the power
When all hell's breakin' loose
You'll be riding the eye of the storm"

Once, we got to put in requests for music to play for the day. I asked for "banjo music" and it was a really fun and chill rolling session.

My group is kind of sick of banjo music. Admittedly, I kind of love playing Goober Beatz (Banjo Heavy Metal) when I'm training, so it's my own fault. 😅
