Beltchecker has already sparked a handful cases of profiles with belts from grappling styles that are not straight BJJ, which were more or less all of them directly disputed and either changed or removed by the owner. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out in the future as more people come on board.

Will the community approve Luta Livre, 10th planet, no-gi etc belts here? Are nogi belts valid as BJJ ranks? What are your thoughts?

I think All of those -- Luta Livre, 10thP, etc are legit Jiu-Jitsu, with hard sparring as an intrinsic part of their system; we should approve their ranks like anyone elses.

You'd have to change the name to Grapplechecker.

I could totally at some point split this out in separate sites for other styles, like Judo, LL, etc.
I imagine you could. Wouldn't it mean alot of work for you?

Well yes and no. Some work to set it up, once running, no work. I don’t feel like doing that any time soon though, have a loooot of things to build and improve first :)

The 10p is the hard one actually...
Yup, at least around here they are accepted as legit BJJ belts... I think some/most(?) 10p schools in Finland have a little bit of cross-training in the gi as well, and the 10p students often enter the FBJJF events (always a lot of them in the nogi comps; a few do the gi ones too) at their belt rank levels earned at the home gym.

I wondered about 10p, but then I just decided that since they have Jiu Jitsu in the name, it falls into the category regardless of the uniform.

If there was “no-gi” written across the belt on the person’s profile page, it would make more sense to me. That being said, I find it strange that people who don’t wear the gi, and vice verse, would be verifying the group that falls outside of their style. For example, if someone has a 10p BB, I only think they should verified and get verified by other 10p BBs.
However, the other way around nobody seems to see a problem with it.

People who train exclusively in the gi represent the same rank when they take of the gi. (Even though they might be quite a bit worse that way... like me.)

I kind of agree with this. Also, it would make the belt and promotion statistics a bit weird.

Why would you ignore X-percent of the Art?!

I fully Honor and respect 10p an LL as awesome grapplers - I love to train with them and I love to learn from them!

But to me BJJ is Gi AND NoGi, Sport AND ValeTudo/Self-Defense...

If you summ this up you have four categories- you do all of those, you do BJJ, if you don’t, you might practice PARTS of the Art, but I would not see any rank as BJJ.

Same goes for Strategy- if you play „catch mentality“ over „Position before submission“, you might be an awesome and successful grappler - but in my book, you don’t really practice BJJ.

10th Planet is awesome.

I am not ranked under 10th Planet.

Therefore, I would defer to the 10th Planet folks to comment on those belts.

I got the poop belt on both 10P and BJJ. They are different in many ways, but still they have even more in common. Teach a 10P guy how to grip with gi plus throw in a few lapel chokes and you get a legit BJJ belt.

I think that's what would have to happen, honestly. As someone who has done other (non-wrestling) submission grappling styles before BJJ, I am still probably more effective overall no-gi than I am with a gi. BUT it would be weird to have a gi-based BJJ practitioner try to validate that, or for a non-gi practitioner try to validate me with a gi.

Other grappling styles also often lack belts, since they don't wear a gi/kimono. Some use faux belts (paper only), some use colored shirts, some have "belts' but with completely different rank systems. It would be more of a "yes they can grapple effectively at some level" verification than an actual belt-level verification system, I believe.

As a guy who also trains Luta Livre, I'd recommend adding them as a sub category, except for 10th planet, because they're technically recognised by the federations.

I fail to see why we wouldn't recognize LL and 10P belts. The gi/nogi dichotomy assumes folks who are ranked in BJJ are spending time in the gi (or some amount of time in nogi) and neither of those are necessarily true. The only difference here is that someone is more likely to be spending the majority, if not all, of their time doing nogi.

Jujitsu/judo and MMA shouldn't be considered on here because the former is a completely different belt system with different expectations that should have a different voting scale and the latter is just in-house belts with no real recognized weight.

Well Drew, the core of LL includes a lot of stuff that most of the BJJ schools don't ever do. 10P is just a matter of attire.

I beg to differ! 10P is basically BJJ fuzed with catch wrestling. At least that's what we do at our gym. Neck cranks, spine locks, compression, all the good stuff. =D We do it with the gi aswell.

I agree with this, particularly the 4 types. 10th planet is sport NoGi, but there's a heck of a lot of people doing sport Gi with zero regard for any self defence application. I can't see the logic to exclude 10th planet. In my experience they recognise your Gi belt anyway, but it don't think it's the same at every club.

I think they recognise your BJJ rank up to brown belt. I got mine right away when I started walking on the flat earth (jk). But if you got a 10P rank and got promoted in BJJ, let's say from blue to purple, you'd still be a blue belt under 10P.

Christian,

I’d love to see you follow through with a judo Belt Checker. Is that something you’re seriously considering?

In our gym, "no-gi" class is always ADCC rules so includes all that (also one of our black belts is a huge catch wrestling enthusiast, so that has some influence). But wIth the kimono it's IBJJF rules by default. I think most places have it like this(?).

Yes that's what i saw. If you went there as a BJJ blue / purple belt, then they wouldn't expect you to start from white again. I think their logic would be that they should be your main club so they should be the ones to promote you in future, so they might not want to recognise promotion to brown for that reason.

Same for us, unless there's a nogi-rules competition coming up, in which case we spar with nogi rules.
