Well, everyone knows that ONE STRIKE (be it punch, elbow, knee, headbutt) PER PERSON PER ROUND IS ALLOWED as long as you say "I'm sorry" immediately after. He didn't so he had it coming.

Amen! I've been elbowed, kneed, what have you so many times but it's always followed with "I'm so sorry are you ok".... I never have an issue with this.

Winding up to punch and it was hard. I have a fist sized bruise. I still should have handled my end better and wish I did

You know what's great? We had an actual, respectful exchange of ideas here, and the OP changed his mind. If this subject was addressed at an anonymous site, i bet we'd all dug our heels in and resorted to tough guy posing. Just sayin'
and the awesome thing sir, I bet everyone who posted here, we'd have this same conversation in real life, which excites me for meeting hopefully you all at Globetrotter camps one day!

Accidental hitting during rolling happens. I gave a guy a black eye in November and felt so bad about it, I bought him a Starbucks gift card to say "sorry."

Winding up your fist to punch, I would hard "nope" out of future rolls with that person.

No doubt! Just a couple weeks ago I caught and elbow to the teeth. The guy felt TERRIBLE . It sucked but I chalked it up to the risks of a physical sport.

This is entirely true in tournament matches. I've even been at one academy before where the instructor legit was like you get 1 free elbow make sure you take advantage of it. lol

I personally try to be nice even in tournament matches when I have a submission where If I was just to go full speed it would cause injury before they would have time to tap and my reflexes to stop.

And David just drill with the spazzy guy when it comes time to roll, keep them in one position that they have to reset each time you get out of that position and it should stop a lot of the transitional damage. A lot of spazzy white and blue belts the damage occurs when they are transitioning from spot to spot from still not knowing what they are doing. The damage from purple belts and up normally just come from bruised egos and not a lack of knowledge lol but that really is the huge difference between purple and blue. Rarely do purple belts and up cause damage from untechnical movements.

I agree with the transitional mistakes. But this wasn't a transition, I had a loop choke with my guard closed. He swung at my ribs

I just mean in the future, if it was a legit intentional punch and not some oh shit I'm choking spazzy movement, i prob would of just stopped what i was doing and just looked him straight in the eyes and waited for the apology,

Not proud to say that I've also done that (holding onto a choke a little longer after the tap) but often it was for similar reasons, otherwise the person would have thought they successfully defended and continued spazzing or gloating about how they beat a higher belt when I was letting them work.

I've had rolls with women where I've been cat-scratched á la Bruce Lee and this was a similar sized (as me) female blue belt. Her idea to pass my guard was to grab handfuls of skin or claw away until I released the guard. That one I just responded with a sweep and took her claws away from my face and torso. Should have taken pics of the claw marks...

When I encounter such situations, I let them stew in bad positions for them to tire out then I let them go and explain why I did that.

I really appreciate everyone's input and not completely destroying me for losing my cool. I am going to sit down with this guy and explain why each of our actions were wrong and apologize for my end of it

This will no doubt be something I keep in my back pocket for a teaching moment.

I have had similar situations both to myself and to lower belts. I have many times taken the next roll and never even tried to submit them, but rib on rib pressure, cross facing slow and steady like with the rough side of the gi. Elbow points in ribs. Face locks. Pressure points. Not the first time it happens, that is a conversation, the second time is just pure fun for me.

At the end of the day if you can simply get the concept in their head that this isn't serious. That it's not about winning, its about learning and sometimes in order to make yourself better you have to make yourself worse. And your constantly repeating this habit of making yourself worse in order to get better and you must be able to allow yourself to be worse and not focused on winning but your "micro adjustments" lol

If they are able to understand that concept then that alone should stop 90% of the non sense.

Bear in mind, at blue & purple I had my share of unsavory mat enforcer moments, quite like yours. So I really know where you're coming from.

But it's short term glory (temporary adrenal rush, macho bullshit), long term damage (physical, interpersonal, emotional).

Not worth it.

SH$# happens.. I wouldnt say that the holding of the choke was condoned but enforcing that he needed to calm down was needed.. That usually when you hit a sub and you do it quickly instead of slowly applying pressure. well end all be all... he learned.

So guy came in today and as I was about to apologize for the choke he tells me I'm lucky this is jiu jitsu and not MMA. I paused for a second thinking ok he's messing with me. Nope.

Did you talk to you instructor about him and his bad attitude. Attitudes like that can ruin a good vibe in the gym.

Briefly, but I haven't had a chance to sit down with him. This tonight only added to my reasoning for him needing a talk.

You're absolutely right, people wo t want to be in this gym and I don't want that to happen

The longer you wait the more serious the issue becomes. He needs to be told that his ego needs to be left at the door of the gym, and that the belt higher archy it there for a reason and he needs to respect it while in the gym.

I get it... but you were in the wrong for disregarding the tap. That could have been enough for him to escalate right back into punching you in the face and it would have turned into a full blown fight. I've seen stuff like this happen.

The right move in that situation- stop, get up and say "don't ever punch anyone during rolling. we're done." and walk off before you do something you might regret, and later on let your coach know what happened. If your coach has any degree of competence in running his business and maintaining a good culture at his gym, he's going to ensure that sort of thing does not remain unchecked.

I try to teach my son that tapping isn't losing, it's withdrawing consent to what's happening to you. When you tap you are taking back your power and autonomy, not giving it up. That's why the tap is extremely sacred and should be respected. That said, what you are saying about this guy disturbs me, especially that he's been talked to repeatedly and isn't listening. Me personally, I wouldn't roll with a guy like that (but I'm the only woman in my class and live in fear of being injured). I wouldn't roll with anyone if they'd hit me to get me to release a sub. Maybe when enough people don't want to work with him, he'll wake up.
I think this is honestly the best response. It'd be a different story if this was a fresh first day white belt, but in the original post, the person was a blue belt and should be familiar with the rules of rolling. You don't accidentally wind up and punch a guy in the ribs. I've got plenty of people who are on my no list when rolling because I'm not sure they have the control not to cause injury.
