I am from a Carlson school, and I've OSS'ed more than you people can believe. However, BJJ is not kyokushinkai karate. They don't OSS! in Japan. They don't. No one does. Time to let things die, frens.
I came up in a Carlson school as well, it was part of the environment, that I naturally adopted during training.
It’s funny. In our pursuits of trying new things and meeting new cultures. We adopt the mannerisms of the people we find ourselves wanting to be accepted by..
Training with Master Cavalcanti “Carlson Gracie” Las Vegas
Oss was used to confirm statements and acknowledge understanding of a subject or instruction given by my Brazilian instructor.
Fast forward 16 years. I believe in progression and common sense
Boeing to mats, pictures on walls, and other traditions are not my cup of tea anymore. I want to warm up slap hands and get it
To sum up this long winded note.
I respect those that like to stay traditional, and prefer to move on and evolve
Jiu jitsu has evolved 200% with contributions from all over the world. It no longer belongs to Brazil or its earlier source of Japan
Just an opinion

Oss wasn't being used at any Carlson affiliated gyms I trained at in the early days (early 2000s).

I heard it a lot at Judo but almost never at BJJ. Is it not more of a formal thing?

I have ossed with Jr, but not at Chicago HQ ... maybe it was because I initiated it lol. I have similarly ossed with Julio Foca Fernandez, again, maybe I started it. As for Sr, I remember a lot of porras but can't remember any osses. You're making me second guess myself. Oss was common in Brazil though, heard it a lot there.

If it was Julio Foca Fernandez then I would have thought for sure the BJJ Revolution team would be doing it and I don't ever remember hearing it from them.
We need to dig into who started this. And if it is, indeeed, Deepu then damn you Deepu.
Damn you.

Sure was at my school 100%.
I didn’t know what the hell an oss was. I just fell into line with the rest of my class

I’ve trained at gyms that “Oss” was very prominently used. I’ve also trained at gyms where it is openly mocked. I have no preference either way. When in Rome sort of thing.

We are the latter for sure. But, as I'm sure you mostly have guessed, we openly mock most things.
And mostly, we mock ourselves.

How about instead we adopt that thing they do when doing kata or breaking boards. KIAI!!
I am a Karate-ka, and we don't break boards. They are far to expensive to go breaking good quality lumber. :D
In all seriousness, we haven't used Osu in years in my Karate classes(Yoshukai and Ashihara lineage). It kinda died out like thanking everyone in Japanese vs English. The only things we do in Japanese in my classes(BJJ, Judo, Sambo & Karate) are technique names, and counting. Other than that, English or Portuguese(if I know the name in Portuguese).

Leave the awkward Shaka alone. Its my signature move.

I have used my fair share of Osu and OSS and although I try not to,
I find old habits die hard and it will depend for me what the coaches expectations are
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do"
when we are at home its very informal minimal Ossing but definitely still slips out.

After literally doing a zoom debate with one of my student's on this topic during lockdown I'm encouraged at the consensus on this thread. Seems like alot of people are using it ironically and not realising that juniors are taking it seriously...
