Cool that you're under Gumby! Is he on here yet? I know a few people from his era are about (including the guy who ran bjj.org back in the day, IIRC), so it would be cool to see him as well, if he isn't already on Beltchecker. :D
If it's the same Gumby from On The Mat, yeah, tell him to get his ass on here!

I called my instructor a professor recently and he proceeded to heel-hook me whilst giving me a nasty telling off.
I like him already

I have been training BJJ a long time, longer than I want to admit out loud because it basically is admitting that I'm old. I have never called my coaches anything other than 'Mario', 'Fernando', and 'Neto'. I have never referred to any other BJJ Black Belt I have ever come across as anything other than their first name and I've never had anyone tell me to do anything other than that and that includes people like Terere, and Margarida, and Pedro Sauer, and even Royce Gracie. I even refer to Lloyd Irvin as 'Lloyd' when I have had to interact with him in the past and even he didn't say 'It's MASTER Lloyd'. I keep hearing about these people that demand to be called by a title but they are like Bigfoot for me. Maybe one day I will be lucky enough to come across this elusive egomaniac.
Joe I have NEVER been asked to be call anyone other than by their name other than a local TKD guy I was introduced to that corrected me and said address me as Master. My response was sure masterbator even if you could whoop my ass I wouldn't call you Master. Lincoln freed the fucking slaves
I have actually seen new students corrected and actually was in a room one time when a guy corrected his student and pointed at me and said he is the only one who doesn't have to call me professor

lol yeah that's him. I don't think he really cares to join. We only have one other person from the gym (Jackie) here who got her black belt the same day as me.

Tell him there is an actual "Forum" and that there are lots of the old crew on here from NHB Gear Forum and In The Guard forum. That might entice him a bit.

This thread has gotten me thinking
Moving forward my official title will be "Lord God Master of all he surveys and most handsome man in the world"

One of the things that I have always enjoyed about Bjj was how laid back it was compared to traditional Eastern Martial Arts like Karate. At my first Bjj school, I appreciated not having to bow in or greet every higher belted person. I hope that as Bjj continues to expand that it continues to be laid back with instructors not demanding titles. The two heads of my affiliation, Rodrigo Medeiros and Julio Fernandez, have always been good with just the first name basis, and I really respect them for that.

Ridiculous!!! I personally am reluctant for anyone to even call me professor in class... If someone insists on a title, I think coach is probably the one with the least ego associated with it.
