Rash guards under your gi

I pretty much always wear a rashguard under my gi and encourage our members to do the same. Only time I've really gone without is during comp when not allowed.

when I started judo/bjj I wore a t-shirt underneath because I was embarrassed about my body (silly, I know). At my first judo tournament I found out I wasn't allowed to wear anything underneath the gi. Ever since then I just never wore anything underneath. I guess being forced to not wear a shirt or rash guard showed to me that I was self conscious for no reason. Having said that I feel like the decision to wear something or not should always just be left up to the individual rather than a blanket policy.

I personally don't wear rash guards under my gi top normally. I live in a very hot climate and the less clothes the better. LOL However, I would in colder areas and times!
Should it be mandatory? Absolutely not! As long as you and your gear is clean, shouldn't matter. Everyone has preferences. Kind of like todays social & political climate and preferences in food! None of it matters! Everyone has their own views, their chosen political parties and chosen genders! However, don't try to force me to call you something or view things the way you view things. Not gonna happen! When you start making things mandatory, especially with little things like that, could create issues and unnecessary tension. Just like some schools with their mandatory uniform requirements!
I get it why some schools do it. However, it's not me or my guys. I don't force anyone to wear or not to wear a rash guard under their gi's. Especially in our part of the country. I could also imagine that would be the case is most hot and humid climates as well.

Do you guys not have air conditioning?

We do. In our lobby. In the main training area, it's a warehouse. We only have swamp coolers there. Get's a bit toasty. Even when we were in a smaller building with 2 AC's, in our summers and with all of the bodies and permeating body heat from everyone in the building, the AC's didn't do much either.

I always do, but I would probably rather not wear one.
I didn't for many years but then there was a bit of an outbreak (skin infections) at our club a few years ago and coaches suggested long sleeve rashguards might help reduce spread. So I started wearing one and I haven't stopped since.
If attending a camp where I am training longer hours than usual, I'd probably wear one to for the rash protection qualities but normal class I'd rather go barefront.

Rashguards are kind of mandatory in my gym. The only time I didn't wear one, was before competition to get used to it, because without Rashguarda I kind of feel like I am missing something.
I always wear a rash guard and spats also because I feel better mentally, i feel complete. That's why I like (black) gi's so much. It looks like if you wear a tie, you could go to work with it and noone would notice.
Sparring with a guy who has no Rashguard and who sweats, and then smashes you with his chest is evil and should be banned.
I think Rashguards are also more hygienic for the skin, I have less skin contact with anyone else or the mat. They compress your skin for better bloodflow.
I also think Rashguards cool better. They also look very nice. I really like al those fancy prints. But I wear black only, because I never can decide which one I want.
The only thing I need is a face-rash-guard because I tend to sweat within minutes. Something like spiderman...I guess he has the same problems.

I do they help with the gross factor for your partner also that one guy at the gym who never cuts his nails seems to get my less often. Seems every time I do not wear one I end up with a huge scrape somewhere

I just like the feel of rashguard under the gi better.
And +1 for throwing the jacket off to roll nogi.

After many a judo session my nipples have been in agony. Vaseline kind of helped. I welcomed the rash guards in BJJ.
And don’t get me started on people taking a huge handful of chest hair in judo!

Duct tape saves nipples. Gorilla Tape adds to the manliness

I didn't used to until I got a staph infection that turned into MRSA. Since then I always wear a rash guard or t-shirt under my Gi along with spats. I'm not going through that again.

It depends on the temperature of the gym in my case. We don’t have AC, so between Memorial Day (May) and Labor Day (September) we are 95% nogi. Spats and fight shorts.
After the switch back to gi season, there are several months where it’s real hot to train. This is bare chest weather for me.
When winter is in full force, and the heater won’t keep up, I tend to have the rash guard under.
It is a bit up to the culture of the gym though. I was a guest at a seminar 20 minutes away, and was pulled aside and scolded for not having a shirt/rash guard under the gi. I donno, when in Rome?
