When they completely leave for another instructor, I won't lie, it can hurt (depending on how long they were there). Yeah yeah, I know it's just a business, but a lot of times it's losing a friend.
Believe me, I definitely understand that feeling. It is heartbreaking sometimes. Sucks to lose a friend for sure.
In the end though I realize that they are ultimately free to choose what they want to do with their lives.

Question for Instructors and Academy owners. When someone leaves your academy to train somewhere else or likes to train at other academies while continuing in yours as a paying member, do you consider them a traitor? Martial Arts is the only activity where customers are vilified for seeking the same product (bjj) elsewhere.
The old notion of loyalty in the commercially operated gym is a weird concept. I don't expect my barber to be upset and ban me if I get my haircut somewhere else, so as a paying customer they are free to train with whomever where ever they want. Life is already stressful so why add learning BJJ to that list?
Having said that, what I dislike is the gossiping and politics that usually follows in their wake when they leave for or return from a different gym. Surely there must be more interesting and productive ways to use one's time and energies?

The one that is pretty annoying is the attempts at poaching that follow.

Honestly, I have heard this one from both sides and there are many good points made.
People talk about loyalty and it's a 2 way street at times even in a good situation it can be better for one party to part ways.
I have to preface this with I do not make money teaching so it puts me in an un-pressured position as an instructor. I view life as a journey sometimes we walk the same path and others we need to walk a different path but I try to always leave the door open as the path many times does come together again.
I do what I do because of who I am and how it makes me feel and the people I help owe me nothing in return I hope they learn life skills along with technique but sometimes they are all about themselves and that is cool to sometimes life can do addition by subtraction
