IBJJF still have sinister people on their roster.
Sure. But they're less likely to be certified black belts, because of the background check. Anybody can just register and compete with them without getting certified.

I saw a disputed profile where a person was a Black Belt under a Black Belt who was under Lloyd Irvin.

Personally I think Lloyd is a horrible human being but no one can deny he is legitimate and produces legitimate guys.

To judge someones credentials by their behavior is a little beyond the scale of ranking. Their are scumbags in almost all martial arts it doesn't mean they are not good at the style. How far down the line do you go in disputing?

If it is based on behavior or behavior then anyone here whose lineage is under the Gracie name do some research they were thugs, misogynists and con men. Does that mean most of us don't have legit rank?

I'm from a budo background, where conduct and values are very important and also in BJJ, I've been taught that personal qualities matter in promotions. Far from all schools agree. When it comes to promoting instructors, I think there sometimes needs to be a healthy degree of remedy along the lineage, as not to legitimize or help 'immortalize' bad seeds through cemented lineages which might be passed on for longer than we ourselves are around. In some cases, I think the lineage can be 'mended', through putting things into context and taking a clear and explicit stand (as e.g. Fredson Paixao himself could have done) on what's acceptable and not. Good to be transparent in the process. In other cases, I think the lineage would be better off replaced all together and put on the scrap heap instead of being passed on. Raises interesting questions too on what your lineage is and to what extent you could deside that for yourself. Standard seems to be the lineage through who promoted you to BB, even if only a temporary acquaintance. Especially if who really developed you up to that level was not BB+2 him or herself. What if you feel you've developed more after receiving BB than the time up to BB? Lineage is up to negotiation and community acceptance I'd say, where I personally would very much take into account if there was a tarnished lineage to handle. On Beltchecker, I usually don't downvote if a member touches on the subject him or herself and clearly wants to dissociate from the amoral instructor. While I have been known to downvote on instances where the issue is not adressed or is handled as unproblematic.
Budo?

You mean like the Samarai ?

Practicing on civilians, following orders of patty tyrants and bullying anyone that got in their way.

I love revisionist history The Japanese couldn't wait to get rid of them. Made them outlaws and social pariahs. Gave rise to the Yakuza.

Around WW2 to promote nationalism and xenophobia suddenly resurrected as heroes

Then you probably also saw "Team Lloyd Irvin" on the profile when it was disputed and that the dispute would be removed if the person clearly stated that there was no present affiliation.

I suggest you take the (modern) context of when it was written into account when reading an expression like "budo", even if you have ever so impressive historical knowledge. If we take another example, if someone says they've live a christian life, don't make a habit of assuming "You mean like the Spanish inquisition, Salem witch trials and Albigensian Crusade?".

I think it is only to notice that we are dealing with an excessive romanticization of something which is also connected to many bad aspects and even has the term „war“ in its name.
It is not a simple world we are living in…..

Maybe that points to the fact that even a common sense is sometimes not so common.
Including questions of ethics, morality and forgiveable or unforgiveable behaviour.

My point was I could understand you not voting because of it but to dispute I feel is bringing something in that has no meaning when it comes to BJJ belt rank. I am not qualified to make moral or ethical judgement on others but I am comfortable looking to see if rank is legit.

If I think a guy sucks as a teacher or competitive grappler but his rank comes from a legit teacher I am not going to dispute as he was either awarded the rank or not. My ranking criteria can be very different than other peoples

As to Budo just as you have your personal opinion of it so do. I am sorry I do take into account historical references when a "Christian lifestyle" comes up.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree

I need some time to process the ethics and morality of these hard questions. Personally though, I explicitly do not support Moya Brand for the owner/founder's checkered history and I'm surprised not more people know about it. Some might not care and most don't know about it I guess. On this matter, is Beltchecker for solely for validating belts or also attaching ethics/morals and associated links to people of questionable character, separated by 1-2 or more degrees?
Man do I feel like I'm the only anti-Moya guy. I know cops/detectives in Los Angeles that rock Moya. So weird.

I won't for FOR a guy that is a legitimate black belt but is has major ethics issues, but I won't vote them down either. Ethics are very important to my and I vote with my time, effort, energy, and money. I won't belong to a school that turns a blind eye to students that are douches on or off the mat, but I won't speak badly about them either. I won't go see a movie with stars who's politics or behaviour I find abhorrent, but I won't actively campaign against them. Moya, on the other hand, is the worst kind of human and he did get the justice he deserved. I feel the urge to to rail against that horrible douche. I think he was very underhanded in starting the business from the stories I"ve heard.

More importantly, I now know why I never got my brown belt from Dean Lister.

Essentially from BELTCHECKER side OFFICIALLY the only verification criteria is that "IS THE PRESENTED INFORMATION CORRECT".

By that standard one could verify Bolsonaros red belt or whatever should he come here :D

At the same time everyone explicitly has a FREEDOM for their own additional objective or subjective criteria.

E.g. I wouldn't verify Bolsonaro because firstly he doesn't actually know BJJ despite factually having a belt from legit lineage AND I just wouldn't f#n want to. Period.

One of the few things I like about the ibjjf certification, as well as my various usa judo certifications, is that you have to pass a background check, as well as pass a course with safesport (a non-profit organization that basically tells you how to avoid exploitation of children and other vulnerable groups of people at your gym). I hope that maybe we can get something similar here one day when we get our rank certified (i.e. certificate manually verified or whatever) on beltchecker.
Yes. Because many exploitations of children and other vulnerable people have been prevented by telling people that you shouldn't exploiting children and other vulnerable people IS WRONG.

Yes I'm being bitter here. These things are needed but unfortunately organisations like this set a VERY LOW basic bar so it becomes just a tedious hoop to jump through for 99.9% of people who are NOT the problem and the 0.1% of people who ARE a problem will jump through it and behave badly regardless.
