Anyone had a detached retina repaired? Hope long did you have to wait to start training again?

I had surgery a week ago. I’ll definitely be following my doctor’s advice. I’m just curious of other people’s experiences.

I had mine ripped off by a toe nail some ten years ago or so. Was a pretty rough night in the hospital, I remember those pain killer eyedrops worked for 15 minutes but I was only allowed to get them every 30 minutes. Blinking was like scratching and open wound.

But it healed super fast though, already next morning it was much better and I was back training in no time.

@Steven I sincerely wish you a speedy recovery and listening to your doctor is always a good idea;)

@Christian painful story...caused by an uncut toenail...I emphasize every day in the dojo the importance of cutting finger and toenails.

It is not only about the cut that is caused but also the real chance of a serious infection due to the dirt that is under the nails. I once had someone who had not cut his toenails and during sparring (standing up) he stepped in to perform a take down and the toenail of his big toe went completely under the toenail of my big toe. Not only was my toenail completely vertically upwards (if you know what I mean) but I got a serious infection in the weeks after. Fortunately the right medication solved that problem well.

Thanks for sharing. Sounds painful. I’m glad to hear you had a quick and successful recovery. Fortunately I’m not experiencing any pain, just discomfort from the stitches.

Thanks Eric. I’m only a week out of surgery but my doctor is expecting me to be able to return to the mats after about 2 months.

It wasn’t uncut, he actually just cut the nails that same day. Which was why they were so sharp.

I always tell people to cut their nails after training so they have at least a day or two to soften

Got eye poked pretty hard in my left eye, had the retina detached and dislocated the lens and also caused a cataract, got it all fixed and vision was back to about 80% started training again after about 4 weeks

2 years later it came off again completely, no idea how it happened I just basically couldn't see anything, went to the specialist and he sent me for emergency surgery that night at the hospital, it was a macular off detachment with several holes that had to be lazered and they found damage to the optic nerve too.

Had to spend 14 days laying face down in bed and 3 months off training and now a year later im only at about 10% vision in it and classed as legally blind in that eye.

It sucks for sure... But mine was an extreme case, many are fixed and you go back to 20/20 vision in a few months.

Thanks for sharing Chris. Sounds like an unfortunate accident with some serious consequences. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

I'm not sure what caused my retina to detach. I was driving on a Sunday and noticed a large dark spot in my vision. I went the following morning to get it checked out and they rushed me in for emergency surgery. I'm right at a month out and still don't have full vision restored in my right eye. When they reattached my retina they had to also repair 4 holes they found. My doctor says I'm going to need work on my left eye as well. I'll find out more next week when I go back for my next follow up.

I’m happy to share that my right eye has healed back to 20/20 and my doctor cleared me to start training again. Although he said I don’t have any restrictions, I’m still taking it slow and will be extremely selective on who I roll with for a while longer.

Pleased for you man great stuff, but yes take it easy at first... I've now developed a cataract on my good eye basically due to it straining all the time to make up for the bad one.

This is something I could of done without!

I got a detached retina back in 1993-1994 while I was deployed. The Army fixed it with a sceral buckle. I was on convalescence for two weeks, and had a no-dusty environments, no lifting profile for a month after that.

Good decision on following the doctor's advice carefully. Avoiding complications and prolonged time away is an easy decision. The mats will be there waiting.

Congratulations on getting through it successfully.

Great to hear you are doing well. So what was the total time? About 3 months based on the post timeline? Did you to any sort of training, exercise? intrested to hear how you went about the process.
