What in the world is wrong with people? I'm tempted to start telling people I'm not doing BJJ since it just seems so rapey these days...

Who knows. But once someone is accused, it becomes incredibly difficult to convince people they’re completely innocent, doubt tends to stick, even without proof.
In the martial arts world, that weight can be even heavier. On TOP, reputation is everything. It’s not just about skill, but about character, respect, and the trust built over years on the mats. A single accusation can shake that foundation, because this is a community where people train closely, rely on one another, and value integrity as much as technique.
At the same time, true martial arts also teach patience, discipline, and clarity, the ability to step back, seek truth, and not rush to judgment. In the long run, consistency, behavior, and time are often what rebuild or redefine a person’s place within the community.

I'm disappointed but I can't say at this point that I'm surprised. I'm not sure why we thought we'd be better about this than other sports. Abuse is rampant in anything that has any sort of power dynamics. The belt system is just a built in power dynamic, I wish we did like sambo and just wore belts that match our jackets. Although I struggle to think of a sport where coaches don't abuse their power even without belts.

Independent of the case above: it has nothing to do with belts per se, but with people in power positions (like trainers, instructors).
I posted that a while ago and it’s from a German evaluation:
It's always the (toxic) men, often in leadership roles (source of a german evaluation in relation to sexual violence and harassment in the context of sports; Rulofs, Bettina et al. (2022)).
For the peeps saying, that women would do that kind of stuff to men/boys, too:
94% of the offenders were men, only 3% were women....
81% happened in a Sports team/ Club (only 3% in Sports lessons in schools or universities). From Gymnastiks (17%), Judo (7%), swimming team (7%), soccer team (10%) to other sports( 49%)
81% of the sexual offenders were the Coaches/Trainers/ Instructors, 19% of the offenders were other members (or in professional sports people like team doctors)…

In the article, they describe an audio recording where the alleged perpetrator admits to, at very least, an inappropriate relationship with an underage girl.
My guess is in 2 months he'll be training with Cyborg and coaching his students matside at IBJJF events or some shit.
