A common challenge that almost every Jiu-Jitsu practitioner will face at some point in their career is the distance of a club. While there are a variety of factors that can impact one's ability to train regularly, at the end of the day outside a combination of extraordinary circumstances, many of us can do it if we make it a priority.

Important Note: This isn't a post that requires anyone to validate why they're not able to train or train more regularly. Therefore, don't feel the need to defend yourself.

This is a post too highlight that some of the very people we share the mat with are in a similar or even worse circumstances but still have the time to train just as much or even more often. The only difference is they make it a priority. Now, if it's not a priority, that is 100% ok. With that said, be honest with yourself and don't use the variety of circumstances as a validation for lack of training.

Once again, this isn't for the person that lives in a place where the nearest school is 3 hours away and they don't have a car and they work 12 to 16 hours a day. But, this is for the people that love the sport and the only thing separating them from the happiness they feel everytime they to get the train is a 45-minute drive, or a bus ride and a 5 minute walk, or waking up earlier than usual, or in one of my previous cases a 10 minute walk followed by a 25-minute train ride and then a 2.5 mile jog both ways. You can do it.

I guess I'll make this a question: What is the most you've had to do in order to consistently train weekly?

P.S. I just wanted to use the lyrics from the song "I'm Gonna Be" by The Proclaimers, in the title of this thread.

For Many years I traveled 1.5 hours to make class with my professor.
I did manage to sneak in a visit with my grandma which was nice as well

I totally agreed with you . If you are just half hour drive and work 8-5pm a day. You should be able to train as much as you can if its your priority. I have a family of 4 kids to feed, a job as a tutor yet i still manage to train twice a day. The most i had to do in order to train consistently was during the time i torn my meniscus ,Pcl and Acl. I knew i have to rest by listening to the doctor but my mind just keep convincing me to train. So i started only with drilling And no rolling for 2-3 weeks.

Good topic. I travel 56 minutes in both directions to train. I generally make the trip 2 to 3 times per week.

I've learned that any hiccup with work or the family means training suffers. If I don't leave by 17:55 then I miss class. I have to plan to leave earlier during planting and harvest because getting stuck behind a combine means I miss class. If its snowing I miss class. A 1-hour jiu-jitsu class turns into a 3.5-hour trip. We make time for what matters.

When I started, I had a 145 km / 90 mile one-way trip to my gym... and it was worth it every time!

Started Muay Thai & Vale Tudo at that time since BJJ classes were only 60 min. and usually followed by either a ValeTudo or MuayThai class... since I was there already, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to just stay (I was litteraly wrong about that).

The biggest trap is "well since I'm already here I might as well....".lol. Time flies and I now appreciate the convenience of my current training schedule as I know what it looks like when it is not as readily available. Thanks for sharing.

Gyms have always been pretty close by, less than 18 kilometers, but I have always moved closer. But I have sacrificed careers/studies/relationships. Even spent 5 years without sex, voluntarily, just to have no distractions. No regrets!

I calculated that I have driven 9000 km last year to get to class.. Its less than 20mins drive each way..and is 40km round trip × 6times per week. Not much compared to some guys in tbe gym whom drive 50mins each way 2 to 3 times a week...
