Hi guys,

I was just wondering how do you guys usually use your black belts? If you check my belt record you will notice I trained in lots of difference places and in each place the professors used their belts in different ways.

e.g. 1: I once saw a black belt using the white bar with degrees (3 degres in black tape), but as far as I know people only use that for competitions or to "show" they are not bothered by degrees.
e.g. 2: lots of the black belts in the gym, used to use the red bar with the white delimiters, but as far as I know, please correct me if I am wrong, these delimiters are dedicated to the proper gym instructors, but some of them were using and I never saw them giving classes / no longer were giving classes;
e.g. 3: black belts that only used the red bar, without their degrees even though they had plenty;
e.g. 4: a belt that is so old and teared that it becomes white (picture for reference edit: I dont know why the picture is so big!!! haha), my understanding is that the person is using that one since they got graded.

My questions are, how do you guys use your black belts? do you have more than one? use different belts for different ocasions?

Can you also explain the rational for that?

Thanks!

It's just a freeking belt. You could even wear a normal black belt without a red or white bar.

Last training I forgot my belt and just wore a spare blue belt which someone left at the gym.

Mine is all black. The red bar fell off at some point and I think the black belt degree circus is a bit silly anyways, so I don't bother being part of it.

A black belt is a black belt, imo.

I just got mine, but I have 3 different belts I use now, because I train almost every day and I wash my belt with my gi after each training session, so one of them needs to be clean/dry when I train.

I like the red bar look more than the white bar look. The red looks smooth af.

I think the old tradition, at least in most gyms/lineages, is to add "instructor tabs" (or as you referred to them as "delimiters"...) only after you have been a black belt for a year, you have beaten another BB in competition, and you teach classes. I may decide to add the tabs next September (after I've been a BB for a full year) but I might not...

Oh yeah, and not sure if y'all knew this, but you can actually buy an artificially aged black belt here lol: http://www.oshcollection.[...]d-100_aged

Thanks Robert! I never heard of these beaten another BB in competition before haha

Also, no, this is the first I've seen this "aged black belt" hhaha I think it destroy the whole purpose if you buy one of those.

Yea that's silly white and blue belts sometimes beat BB's in competition. That seems like a pointless rule.

The only thing that should matter is if they are teaching or not. Belts are more about how good someone is at teaching than competing.

I can't imagine how spazzy some people roll against black belts trying to "impress" their instructors or themselves. Must be exhausting.

I like mine with red bar and white edges as "academy owner" signal. Might or might not start to use tenure stripes (have to figure it out in 5 months...)

It's part of the game our responsibility is to teach them. It's tiring at times but we signed up for it

My black belt is still at that new stage where it has zero flexibility, I use it as a constant reminder, that I too also have zero flexibility!

Have multiple belts. I don’t wear the first one given to me as my professor took it off his waist to give it to me. Wear the other ones with no rhyme or reason. Some have red bar (with and without upper/lower bars), some with no bar, some with stripes, some without. I like to keep everyone guessing about my belt fashion of the day.

I have one fancypants belt with all the stripe abracadabra, even my name embroided on it.

That's only worn for photo ops or if I am in grave need of external and ultimately pointless validation by strangers.

The other ones are worn out - but washed & clean, regular ass belts with slowly disappearing stripes (similar to my overall interest in jiu jitsu, coincidentally)

I came up very old school and traditional under the Carlson Gracie Team! We used stripes, we used the white stripes at the ends of the red bar, and a white bar Black Belt wasn't a thing. All black belts came with a red bar. When I was coming up, I was told the black bar on the colored belts and the red bar on the black belts were used to differentiate Jiu-jitsu from other martial arts. Obviously who ever told me that could have been pulling my chain or things drastically changed over the years. Today, I still stick to what I came up through the ranks with. A pretty traditional, Carlson Gracie way of doing things when it comes to rank promotions and belts. However, since I've spent most of my black belt years under Caio Terra, the way he does things belt wise has influenced me and my academy as well. I have several belts but I only use one for a majority of my training. The others was just belts I picked up in the process of trying to find the right belt. I wash my belt quite regularly!

I have a few belts. Mostly given to me as gifts. My favourites are the Kaataro and the Kanji belts.

Red patch with "professor bars" after a year of continuous training and teaching. We don't use the white patch or the blue patch etc.
"Survival degrees" come in the required time.
Other than that all that matters is if you get on the mat or not.

All mine have the traditional RED bar with instructor bars. My original belt awarded to me by my instructor I have saved in my trophy case. All mine have the traditional RED bar.

You and I seem to have the same OCD, or maybe it always being prepared. Not sure which it is.

I just got mine last month and of course my professor bought me a high grade one that I could literally use as a tow strap for my diesel truck.

I usually just wear a simple, plain black belt.
If someone needs a promotion picture, I wear the promotion ceremony belt, with the stripes.
If I go to someone else's room, I will wear a black belt or white belt as they prefer.

I usually wear the one I was awarded but as I wash it and also used to teach at different locations I have 3 spare belts, one that I bought at the Isami store in Tokyo and 1 that I bought from SYR on sale. As I hang dry the belts they take longer to dry (weather factors) and forgetfulness factor so I keep a spare one in the bag.
For stripes, I think it only matters at official gradings or if you have striped black belts students yourself that matter. Usually the 'old guy' look with the old belt gives it away

My understanding is white bar is a stickily competition black belt.
Some places the white bar is just a new black belt that has been a black belt for less than a year and they get the red bar after 1 year.

I am similar to this as in I wear the belt I was promoted in and I have 2 degrees on my black belt (Yes My belt has a red bar on it and I also have 2 spare black belts as I wash my belt after every session with my Gi).

I really like the idea of survival stripes listed above as really the game is all about training learning and continuing to get better! Neither the belt nor the stripes will protect you if you are lazy and do not put in the work training regularly on the mat and doing the tough rounds even when you are tired.
