My son’s comment on the pressure-point ad: “Why is Danny DeVito attacking John Candy?” :)
Your son has impeccable comedy references. :D

I have been chatting with a guy in Brazil. I may be getting my hands on these videos. I can't wait to see what people were getting for their $400. Sadly I won't get those sweet certificates. đŸ€Ł

Okay.

It doesn't look great.

But in all fairness. This was still in the dark ages of BJJ in the USA, when there were hardly any legit instructors around and maybe 1 or 2 purple belts in each state.

Note that it was 400 bucks for a basic 4 tape curriculum to get the ball rolling at your school. With the option to get affiliation, and hands-on seminars with evaluation, belt testing and whatnot.

It wasn't a belt promotion by mail. You still had to get someone to come down and see what you were up to.
I agree it's not the prettiest thing in hindsight. But I'm sure this programme was short-lived anyways.

It's still a far cry from the crazy pyramid schemes, outlandish affiliation fees and other dubious things that were going on in the scene in those days. To give you an idea. I know a guy who had to re-mortgage his HOUSE to pay for a Rickson affiliation.

Just 0.2 cents from me. I got my black belt striped by Junior - so take that for what it's worth.

Yeah. I hear Jr is a great guy. I think the not looking so great you talk about is why he stopped pretty quickly. It was a wild time to say the least. I heard of guys in the late 90s get blue belts just for hosting a seminar. I won't name names. I just ordered the videos from a guy in Brazil. I shall see how they stack up to some of the tapes I had from Rorion back in my youth.

Also, in Jr’s defense, virtually all of the ads in the back of ‘90s martial arts magazines looked like that. They made liberal use of all caps, italics, bold text, and underlining, with passages like, “FEAR NO MAN! Learn the DEADLY, STREET-LETHAL techniques of the NINJA for only ten easy payments of $19.99!” Jr. probably had some marketing guy tell him to do the ad like that. I doubt it was his idea.

Totally agree with this. Back then it was free for all to do anything and everything to capture that small market of people interested in grappling. I recall reading ads which promised to turn you into a death machine with the small payment of $9.99 to unlock the secrets of combat, etc. (Marco Lala, & other similar ads)

Most things look horrible/cheesy in hindsight, refer to your high school pics for evidence, then you will be more forgiving.

So, I actually got my hands on these videos faster than I thought I would. Conan does all the talking. Jr shows the techniques. They are pretty good for late 90s Panther videos. Not $400 good, but there wasn't a lot of options at the time. Definitely better than the Rorion videos that gave you about four techniques repeating a thousand times.

My favorite thing about ‘90s martial arts magazines was all of the “anti-grappling” articles that popped up after the UFC came on the scene. This little gem is from the July 1995 issue of Black Belt Magazine. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but our Jiu-Jitsu techniques can apparently be easily defeated by this combo! I feel like all my years of training have been a shameful waste! ;)
